Sat Jan 29 2011I have been drinking 8 Year-old Old Charter for the last 20 years. Unfortunately it is generally not available in the St. Louis area. I used to stock up, to more than a few incredulous stares, when I would travel down south. Now my local liquor store orders it for me. I prefer it to Crown and much prefer the 8 year to the 10 year-old. It is easily, in my opinion, the best quality bourbon for the price. Just a word of caution, don't try the 101 proof version unless you want to pay twice the price. If your anything like me you will be hooked by the first sip and you won't want to go back! Cheers~

Thu Jan 13 2011A few years ago I started drinking Old Charter, after doing a test on my golf friends. Everyone seemed to like Crown Royal. So I drank Crown also. Then I began to wonder if they knew the difference in whiskies, so I started a testing comparison. I tried several different whiskies, each time against Crown .I tested maybe 12 different ones. Old charter seemed to be my favoriet. I had an empty bottle of Crown so I used it to carry in my golf bag. For about 2 years I would fill that bottle with Old Charter. Every one loved it. They would make comments like ,man that's good stuff, or Crown is my favoriet whisky. Finally I tried it on a man who drinks a half a gallon of Crown a week. Not supprisingly,he too loved it, but didn't know what he was drinking. I'm no connoisseur, I don't know how to describe the aspects of whisky, so I'll just say if you try Old Charter you'll probably like it as I do. Smoooooth, affordable, good flavor. Now I drink it without mixer, even better!

Tue Jun 17 2008I have been comparing several affordable bourbons over the last three weeks or so. As I mentioned under the Wild Turkey 101 posting, I am no connoisseur, but I have been drinking bourbon for a few decades, and it is my favorite liquor. I feel that many of the folks who rate whiskey are merely pretentious in their attempts to use expert classifications, such as describing the taste, the nose, the finish, etc. I have noticed a lot of copying, sometimes from the distiller's own ad copy. So I won't even try to describe the taste; if you find a hint of old leather, vanilla, caramel, oak, and old socks, and these descriptors mean something to you, then well and good and more power to you. I do not deny that some folks will indeed have a more discerning palate than mine. Some of the folks who describe tastes may even be correct, but I don't speak their language, and neither do many of you. These are the bourbons I've been sampling of late: Old Crow, Evan Williams Green Label, Evan Will... Fri Jan 12 2007The best quality for the price. Have to mix it with cola. It above the Evan/Benchmark range and similar to Old Forester. Basically quality is priced accordingly.
