Judging him solely on his performance ON the field, he was one of the best RBs of all time, hands down...

Although a bit overrated overall, for a few seasons he was a killer running back. His cuts were legendary. The way he would slash his way through a defense and knife his way into the end zone would put the fear of god into his victims... er, opponents. Imagine being a defender trying to tackle the juice in his prime... it must have been murder!

On-field, the Juice was everything a team needed. Fast feet, hard to tackle. Off-field, he is everyone's worse nightmare: a murderer who got off scot free due to bad prosecution. The two halves of O.J. cancel out for the current rating...

He still owns the greatest Heisman voting majority of all time. It's funny how the Bills ought to be embarrassed by his actions after leaving football, but Southern Cal receives no such chastisement. Irish, of course, is correct, he was one of the three greatest running backs of all time, his 200 yard season, the first in the history of the NFL, still stands as a tribute, not to him, but to the importance of teamwork. The "Electric Company" was assembled to turn on the juice and it was spectacular. But, he should have been found guilty. Nobody in recent memory has unintentionally divided us racially the way OJ's verdict did, but each side thinks the other is stupid for their belief. The last time I was at the "Ralph" in Buffalo, I was walking down a ramp behind a #32 Bills jersey with the name "Nordberg" on the back.

There are some who have stated that activities off the field should affect a submissions rating. Although I tend to agree, there can still be no denying the greatness of a runningback nicknamed "The Juice". On the flip of that is the morbid thought, that if he could slice and dice another human being....then what was he capable of in a pileup. Wasn't aware that he only had 4 good seasons. That might explain his absence from the top yardage backs of all time.

A miserable human being who got away with murder? Perhaps. Yet, it doesn't erase the fact that he was the first man to rush more than 2000 yards in a single season. A former Heisman Trophy winner from the Universtiy of Southern California, Orenthal James Simpson was the next great running back immediately after Gale Sayers and before Walter Payton- playing for a relatively-hapless team like the 1970s Buffalo Bills. Yes, his legacy as a person after his gridiron days might be blood-stained (sort of speak). But O.J. was one of the best runners ever and a deserving Hall of Famer based on his gridiron accomplishments.

Just because he rushed for 2,003 yards in one season hes good? He had 4 Good rushing seasons thats it the rest were horrible rushing under like 900 rushing yards or something.

Easy kids- the list says 'as a FOOTBALL player' The Juice was a 5-star football player to say the least. . .too bad he hit his wife harder than he hit linebackers. . .

Look, there's OJ the person and OJ the football player. No matter what, you can't ignore one side of the story over the other. Yes, OJ did murder his ex-wife and her friend in cold blood. The evidence is incontrovertible. The blood found inside of OJ's Bronco, the bloody glove and OJ's bloodied clothes was more than enough evidence to merit a conviction. That the defense had extremely convenient explanations to explain this was the long-shot that worked for him. Injecting the race issue sealed the deal in that case. However, despite all of this, we're rating football players here, and OJ was probably one of the greatest runningbacks in the history of football. His records are incredible and he was simply a great sportsman who made the game interesting. I do believe that sportsmanship however is a character issue as well, and that includes how you behave off the field. Taking it in total, he was a great talent, however, he lost it all because of his lack of control and discretion.

Murders can still be good football players. Just look at Ray Lewis! UPDATE: Did somebody not like the Ray joke?

Graceful and smooth. I'm rating him based on his football career and not on his trial.

Sad, such a waste! If he did what he was accused of and it appears very strongly that he did then he is rated a BIG -0- on the list of NFL greats. His earthly accomplishments are nothing and the example he has left for young athletes is shameful.

Would be a five, but I can't bring myself to give such a vile piece of complete and pure $hit a rating so high. My conscience simply will not allow it. On the field, he was easily one of the 5 best backs ever, but when you choose the type of path he did, you forever taint your legacy. It's tragic, but Juice will always be remembered as a murderer, not as the amazing played he once was.

Well, he may have been a great football player, but isn't it important for athletes to have character too? Many children look up to athletes.

Anybody who rated OJ one star needs a remedial course on logic--giving him that rating on this list is just plain stupid. Whether or not a man is a murderer has no bearing on whether or not he was a great football player, and OJ most certainly was both.

One of the greatest running backs of ALL TIME. Awesome player, good commentator, fair actor, and a bad judge of women. Found innocent of the crime of murder in a court of law by a jury of his peers. It's interesting...after 100 years of murders, the first Klansman EVER found guilty of murdering a black person in this country came in 1993. Supposedly, all the Klansmen tried before this time were tried in court of law by a jury of their peers. NOT ONE conviction. This country stood by those verdicts. Maybe O.J. should've joined the Klan...

Who cares? If a guilty man was set free then it shows an inefficiency in our criminal justice system, but an efficient democracy at work. If he didn't do it then he is free, either way there are more pressing cases of this that occur all the time. As I always tend to remind people has Ken Lay been prosecuted yet? As a football player I won't argue about his obvious talent. However, the man is a murderer. If Pete Rose can be kept out of his hall of fame for betting on games, what in the world are we gonna do with someone who murdered two people? Give them five stars??? I DON'T THINK SO!

Okay, let's clarify: reviewing OJ Simpson here falls under the category of NFL Players (All-Time). That doesn't mean review him as a person, or whether you think he killed his wife. In fact, I think he did it, and don't respect him in the least as a person. That said, this is a review of Simpson AS A FOOTBALL PLAYER. And Simpson was a great running back. Simpson's main asset was his speed; at USC, he used to run sprints on a nationally-contending Trojan track team. What separated him from other, less successful, NFL "track stars" like Bob Hayes, however, was his uncanny football IQ and instincts. Simpson was also a large back that could take punishment and run over guys if he needed to. His balance and vision was a lot like Emmitt Smith, and he had a knack for finding the hole with good timing. Basically, Simpson is the prototype NFL running back.

He's a cocky, unrepentant, in-your-face liar and killer. He proved that if you play the race card just right, you can literally get away with murder. But one day he will stand before God, and no lawyer on earth will be able to shield him.
