Its not terrible. Just a few borderline ingredients such as pea protein, rice flour and rice bran and pultry fat. It also uses menadione. I cant trust anything made by nutro to many recalls.

We started out our Frenchie with Royal Canin Puppy 33 and she really responded to it: healthy coat, great energy level and responsiveness, and regular stool. The only downside to the RC was that it is quite expensive so we wanted to switch over to a food that was comparable as well as better for our budget. However, I really wish I had read all these reviews prior to buying the big bag of Nutro Natural Choice Lamb Meal & Rice formula in small bites. Although Lulu really liked the food we started noticing that she had bowel movements at least 4-5 times a day, which was a marked increase from the 2 bm's she had when she was on RC. A few weeks into Nutro, she started shedding excessively and a few bumps started to form on her skin which dried into scabs. She also vomited twice and then started breaking out into severe hives and our vet put her on Prednisone and Benedryl which helped with the symptoms but didn't make it go away completely. After being referred to the dermatologist, h... Read more

My dog has allergies and skin issues, but seemed to do OK on this formula. She used to vomit from time to time, but I thought it was from something she had been eating in the yard. After all the negative press Nutra was getting, I switched to another brand. My dog has not vomited since. I will admit that PRIOR to the negative press, Nutra seemed to be a really good fit.

Formula appears to have be changed. My dogs are always hungry and have lost a lot of weight in the last month

My dogs started out life eating Nutro Natural and then about 5-6 years ago, switched to Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul(CSDLS)and they both have been living very long healthy lives.  This summer my oldest one passed away at the age of 15, she was a large Wolf Hybrid, and did not look or act her age at all.  She was active and had a shinny healthy coat right to the end.  My other dog is an Aussie/Sheltie mix and she is 13 years old and very active and healthy and is aging quite gracefully.  The reason that I had switched my dogs to CSDLS was because I like the list of ingredients better then what the Nutro has    but on the occasions that I couldn't find CSDLS, I then would revert and buy Nutro, so between these two brands of foods, my dogs have led very long, active and healthy lives.  They have never had a sick day once and I attribute that to the excellent nutrition provided by these two brands of food.

This food is one that people love but for all the wrong reasons. They split up the rice content which is the second third and fourth ingredient. So the true first ingredient is probably rice. There is no fresh meat and they use beet pulp which they will lie and say it's for fiber. It causes tear staining and it is used by dog food companies to break down rancid fats. It also has poultry fat which is an unnamed source. Sorry but if you are feeding this you might as well get a costco card and get the Kirkland brand because it's way better quality than Nutro

The first ingredient in this food is a named meat product. It is lamb, inclusive of its water content. Once this is removed, as it must be to produce a dry food, the ignredient will be left weighing around 20% of its wet weight.

no junk like by-products etc. real meat protein with highly digestable rice, not corn and soybeans etc. my 14 yr old has been on this formula for 4 years and she looks great. beautiful coat and less poop to pick up because of the high quality food that she digests. many of my friends feed their dogs (and cats) Nutro products and they all rave about it too. prices are the same or a little lower than so called "comparables. I WILL NEVER CHANGE.

It isn't too rich and does very well as a general affordable food.

I started this trying to find a dog food that did not upset the tummy of our 7month old golden/chow mix that we got at a shelter. The lamb & rice did the trick. We added a 6mo old 42lb black lab puppy (very skinny), she is now 15mo old 72lbs and doing great on this food. The vet even commented on how shinny her coat is. Cannot say her poop is small though :-)

Use it for all my dogs. GREAT food!!! Coats are awesome and the stool volume is low. My seniors are doing GREAT with the extra Glucosamine and Chondroitin ~ especially the 16 year old Lab! Highly recommend this food!!

Decent food at least no corn. Its a better choice than Supermarket brands but not a best choice. Switched off made the coats dry and had some allergy problems.

This is a good mid-range food. I didn't like the fact that it left my dog's coat somewhat dry. Otherwise, I have no complaints.

Nutro is an excellant food. I recently swithched from the lamb and Rice to the Chicken formula. I noticed my Chocolate lab was developing a pecular body odor and read where lamb can be the cause. Now with the chicken he has his 'natural' smell ... and loves the food as well as the lamb. FYI ... certain participating retailers offer a free 50 lb. bag with every 10 bags purchased.

Fed my Great Dane+Rottweiler mix dog this food for 1 month. Poop quantity is less, started scratching herself, would not sleep much and made her dull. I will try Artemis Fresh mix adult regular and write a review after 1 month.

I have been feeding this food for 14 years....... my standard Aussie is 72lbs and 14 years old, my German Shepherd is 68lbs and 13 years old...both have great coats, joints, eyes, energy and are the picture of health.  My results with stool volume is minimal.  Both big dogs produce stool the size my Yorkie did when I was feeding him cheap food near the end of his 16 years (and vet taking me for a last money ride).....just to get him to eat.  I took my standard aussie that is 14 in to the vet for a cut--and the vet looked at her and said "what, is she 10 years old?)......no 14 !!  I tried Ultra with a terrible odor from my dogs--so I went back to this kind.  Works for us!  Good luck.

I used this food when I thought my Golden had allergies to corn and I wanted to stick to exclusive rice.   It was not a good food for my dog as he pooped so much....just a lot of volume.  I couldn't see how he was digesting anything.  But others I know don't have this problem so it simply wasn't a good food for my dog, but may be fine for another.

My pup was eating Nutro Max for a few months and I have recently switched over to Nutro Natural Choice and have not experienced any problems with her at all. We will keep an eye on her.

The qualilty of Nutro lamb and rice seems to have deteriorated badly over the last few years.  It is oilier..sort of greasy and my dogs are having loose stools from it.

Menadione is bad for your pets. Also, for the price this is not as good of a food as so many others in the same price category. Do your research before buying.

Insufficient meat products, fat of unidentifiable origin, use of controversial fillers. The first ingredient in the food is a named meat ingredient. The primary grain in this food is rice. Rice is a decent quality grain; however there are three rice products in the top four ingredients of this food. If they were not split, then it is likely that rice would be the primary ingredient in the food. Rice gluten is a grain fragment (filler) the dried residue after the removal of the larger part of the starch and germ. In plain English, that which remains after all the nutritious bits have been removed. Poultry fat is an ingredient of unidentified origin for which it is impossible to determine source or quality. Unidentified ingredients are usually very low quality. Beet pulp is another controversial ingredient it is a by-product, being dried residue from sugar beets which has been cleaned and extracted in the process of manufacturing sugar. It is a controversial ingredient in dog food,... Read more

I have been feeding Nutro Natural Choice for three years. My golden has always done very well on this food untill about eight months ago, when he started having terrible ear allergies and really dry skin and thinning coat. I emailed the company to ask if they changed their recipe, and they emailed me back saying they didnt change the recipe, they just started adding soybean oil. Which means they changed the recipe! DUH! Soybean oil has been known to cause allergic reactions. They also add beet pulp, which Ive read causes allergies and ear infections.

Ok food, but has way too many grains to be considered good. Out of the first four ingredients, three are grains (Ground Rice, Rice Flour, Rice Bran) they even have rice gluten, which if cooked wrong can become cement in dogs stomachs (anyone remember the greenies problem?). Ever since this company sold out to Petsmart and Petco, the quality of their food has decreased significantly and it is showing in many dogs. Healthy alternatives are Nature's Variety, Solid Gold, Innova or Wellness.

My doggies have been eating Nutro Lamb Meal and Rice for years and they are happy, healthy, energetic and beautiful dogs because of it. And by they way they never have the runs and that's a really good thing when you have two great danes.
