Thu Jun 11 2009North Beach is where the beatniks used to go as people know. It is great for the atmosphere and the coffeehouses.

Thu Jun 04 2009North beach is one of those neighborhoods I love to hate. I can never find parking very easily which is stressful but once I do I seem to relax and be ok there. There are some delicious Italian (my fav is Pan De Ray I think it's called ) restaurants here and you can't help but get a kick out of the Italian men who stand on the street asking you to come into their restaurant. Classic Roma style! Easy on the eyes too! And, the candy store! The store that lets you eat all the taffy you want while shopping inside! This place is great. If you stay away from some of the lame nightclubs you can actually have a pretty good time in North Beach. Just take public transportation there! Hit up one of the wine bars or cigar bars instead of the clubs!

Fri Mar 21 2008At least for tourists, San Fran wouldn't be San Fran without North Beach.

Wed Feb 27 2008North Beach is home to some interesting places like Telegraph Hill and Washington Square. There are some nice restaurants and bars there as well as some strip clubs along Broadway. There is no beach in North Beach.

Wed Oct 17 2007Once next door to Greenwich Village, North Beach is also nothing but an archeological site these days.

Mon Jul 10 2006Washington Square Park is my favorite part of North Beach. You get the smells from all the Italian restaurants, you can hear a violin playing from somewhere, kids are running around, there's a volleyball game going, couples walking around slowly holding hands. The park's surrounded by trees but you get a couple nice views of the hills. It's really a very relaxing and charming place.

Wed Apr 26 2006I live here and love it! Of course, I don't live right in the heart of NB. My favorite places to eat - Sushi on North Beach, Kennedy's, Trattoria Contadina, and Fiora d'Italia.

Sun Nov 13 2005A few good restaurants on the periphery, but too many sex shops and shows.

Sat Jan 15 2005This area is great on a Friday or Saturday night...lots of people out wandering the streets, instead of just driving to one bar, makes for a fun atmosphere. With all the restaurants and cafes, it's not bad during the day either.

Thu Dec 04 2003This was once a wonderful neighborhood, but almost all of it is long gone. There's a pitiful attempt to pretend otherwise. Lots of gay bars, wonderful and cheap restaurants, major jazz clubs,....all gone.

Fri Jun 14 2002I like the chaos and commotion of North Beach, but as Wiggum says, I'm not sure if I could live there. Unlike any other place that I've ever been to, North Beach boasts world class restaurants right next to low grade strip joints. It really is an odd mix of Italy, Vegas, and San Francisco. Definitely worth checking out, but if you're going to live there, make sure you have a parking spot.

Mon Mar 25 2002Love it. I lived here for years. Love the narrow little alleys and stairways. It is far too expensive, however, and I wish it could be more like it used to be in the 50s, around the time of the Beats, with more of the little wood cottages and less highrises and condos. It is great for restaurants and a great farmers market is held every Saturday at the foot of Telegraph Hill on the east side near the Embarcadero.

Tue Mar 12 2002North Beach is a beautiful neighborhood and a fun place to spend a weekend night, but I think it would be a tough place to live. Narrow streets, miserable parking, crowds of tourists - no thanks. But there are some great stores full of history (like City Lights) and lots of great restaurants. You can really picture the Beats hanging out here in the 50s and 60s, going from one jazz club to another.

Sun Jun 17 2001North Beach is a fun neighborhood in San Francisco. Definately explore North Beach on foot. The traffic is terrible. The very best thing about North Beach is Steve Silver's "Beach Blanket Babylon". This is a must see musical review that has been running for 27 years straight at the Club Fuzaggi on Greene Street between Powell and Stockton. Call well in advance for tickets. It sells out quickly. A must see show for visitors to San Francisco.

Fri Jan 12 2001Growing up in the Bay Area and now having lived in San Francisco for about a year and a half, I know that there is no where else in the city I would rather live. I love North Beach. I'll start first by saying that the choices are enless. Restaurants, you want restaurants, well North Beach has a plethora. It has everything from a great little pizza stand (Golden Boy) to a middle of the road (price wise) The Stinking Rose (which is known for its garlic icecream, I've tried it and while it is worth a try, I wouldn't get it again) to the upscale Enrico's, BlackCat, or DalleTorre's (sp?). It has coffee shops with so much character and personality, you can almost see Jack Keuroac's ghost writing in the corner of shops like Cafe Triste and Prague. Then there are the bars. There is after work scenes and happy hours at places like Tosca, Columbus Cafe, and O'Reily's (just to name a couple) and then more crazy places like the Tiki Lounge, Hi Ball, and The Hotel Bastel. My personal favori... Read more
