New Amsterdam Gin

Need negative stars for this. Worst gin ever inflicted on man. Rot-gut vodka with heavy-handed creamsicle flavoring to try and hide the fact. NOT a gin at all. Impossible to make a drinkable cocktail with this paint thinner. Positive reviews are from company shills or sugar-addicted idiots. If you like candy flavored vodka, that's fine, but don't peddle it as gin.

Not bad, This gin is dominated by the aromas of fresh orange peel. This is sweeter and more viscous than your usual gin. Fairly inexpensive $12 in my area. I would still prefer an even cheaper Gordon's over this and Bombay sapphire if you want to spend more.

I tried this gin twice. I'm a Bombay man, both regular and Sapphire. New Amsterdam is drinkable, but there is an aftertaste. I don't know if I agree with the some reviews about it being citrus, but it's SOMETHING. It's like someone said "most people that hate gin, hate it because of the juniper taste. Let's counteract that with_________". And whatever that taste is kind of does a disservice to gin. But it IS smooooth, and I finished the bottle eventually. For now, nothing beats my Bombay.

New Amsterdam sits close to Hendrick's with a nice smooth mouth. The flavor has citrus on top of the juniper. It may be my bias against straight gins, but I would take this over bombay or beefeater any day. The best is its price tag, usually 17-20. Overall, not on par with Hendrick's, but in the same weight class as the heavy hitters. Good spirit.

A top notch gin with an excellent price tag. The flavor is especially good for those trying to move from vodka to more flavorful spirits as it isn't overpowering in the area of juniper, but more akin to citrus. This may detract so far as some of the classic cocktails are concerned but I still think there's not a better gin to get people into it.

While not your traditional gin, it has a lot of merrit. While it lacks the big juniper tast found in a lot of traditional gin, it has been replaced with sweetness and citrus, resulting in a milder, smother taste. I've found it to be apreciated by individuals who normaly dislike gin. This may be apealing to many new gin drinkers who want something mild, or seasoned gin drinkers who want something new. It's a lot of flavor for a low price. It goes well with citrus based gin drinks. When I make a traditional martini with it I substitute the olive for a lime chunk. Makes great vespers, limon martinis, mixed with sprite, or gin and tonics. I also enjoy it straight.

Very good gin for the price! Tastes great in a gin and tonic and is even good by itself. I don't know how it would be in a martini but I don't drink martinis so I don't really care. My only complaint is that it could stand to have a bit more of the juniper flavor that Tanqueray or Bombay has.

The first 80 proof gin that I have found that makes a passable martini. Not quite as good as Beefeater's or Bombay Sapphire for that purpose though. Very good with soda and lime.

Why a "Great" rating??? Superb smoothness and drinkability at an almost unbelievable low price. Value like this merits a Great rating, despite the purists who will pooh-pooh the sweetness of it (and yes, I tend to be one of those as well). I say overlook the forgivable fruity sweetness, which may actually appeal to casual gin drinkers-- a lot of bang for the buck in this one.

New Amsterdam has a low price tag and a top shelf flavor, which makes it very appealing. But the overall impression left on me by this California gin was that it was more vodka than gin. Very strong citrus and floral accents here, and like most new vodka-style gins, heavy angelica. Extremely smooth, but ultimately gutless and unadventurous. This is not a martini gin; its hardly a gin at all, if at all. The price makes it a superb choice for other cocktails, however. Give it a shot.

While probably not great for a traditional martini, I have made a 'vesper' of James Bond fame with this gin and it is quite enjoyable.

This has a citrus (orange) overtone and is really more like a citrus flavoured vodka. It seems to be of good quality (distilling) and the price is certainly appealing. I assume the price is achieved due to it being a domestic product from a producer with deep pockets (Gallo). However, if you are a classic martini drinker, this will not be the gin for you.

Very good gin. Smooth taste, great finish. Bought a lil sampler of it at my local liqour store. Only cost a .99 cents for a 50ml. Had it with OJ and it tasted great. Would definatley buy a big bottle of it.
