Very underrated state, imho, and not just because I've lived here for most of my life. First of all, it's not flat. I-80 is flat, but that's because it runs along the Platte River valley for nearly its entire length through the state. Get off I-80 and you'll find a terrain of pleasantly rolling hills, with grasslands in the West (the Nebraska Sandhills are the largest area of grass covered sand dunes in the Western Hemisphere, and are quite beautiful in a remote sort of way), farmfields in the East, and oak-hickory woodland along the Missouri River in the far eastern part of the state. The person who said there's no outdoor activities to do here has a somewhat skewed picture of outdoor activities. Yes, it lacks mountains, but it's within a day's drive (or an hour flight) of the Rockies, so all in all, it could be a lot worse, and it has some beautiful sandy beaches out at Lake McConaughy. The birdwatching is considered to be some of the best in the world, and the hunting among the b... Read more

If you enjoy being bored out of your gourd, this is the state for you. Favorite activities here include watching corn grow and ...well, that's about it. Like Peter O'Toole said in Lawrence of Arabia, it's clean. Lincoln does have an unusual state capitol building. Known locally as "The Phallus of the Plains," it rises 400 feet above the flat fruited plain like a giant boner.

I'm sure this depends upon the season in which you travel and the time of day, but driving across the entire state of Nebraska overnight in late june, I was greeted first with phenomenal thunder and lightning storms and then by a sky so dark and clear of light pollution that I could practically see infinity.

I have been to South Sioux City, Omaha, Elkhorn, and went through Millard. I used to think Omaha was a western horse town, but then I met people from there who weren't so crazy about horses. Well I stayed in a part industrial and part working class residential part of town, and the hotel and the two right next to it looked cheesy on the outside, I was afraid to go in. The hotel was decent, and I enjoyed my convention in the hotel. We went out furthur west into the suburbs and into Elkhorn. The suburbs look much better than the city, much more colorfull, but it was still urban sprawl which isnt so pretty to me either. To my suprise, the architecture of the buildings and the homes I saw in the city made it look like a giant old horse town. Don't mind seeing it certain areas, or going to a small town known for that, but this is a city. Did not see downtown, and im not rushing to see it, but if I am in the area I would. South Sioux City looked like a small old western town, buildi... Read more

Nebraska is generally considered one of the those boring middle-American states.  I like it.  Uncrowded, open, blue-skies, lots of wildlife.  The Niobrara river is one of the most beautiful in the US.  Why not take a big chunk of western Nebraska, turn it into a buffalo pasture, and preserve a large piece of Western heritage?

Bland- thats all I can say- was held over in Omaha awhile back. Bleak and flat, lots of empty buildings-or so it seemed. Too conservative and not aware of much except the corn huskers playing football- like the blind leading the blind here- My advice to the people of this state- wake up before its too late.

Nebraska is probably the most plain (pun intended) state in the Union. Outdoor activities (hunting, fishing, hiking, skiing, etc.) are extremely limited as both the wildlife and terrain (pretty much 80,000 square miles of prairie) are unsuitable for such recreation. It has a decent university in UNL and of course excellent athletics (football and baseball). Not really worth visiting, unless you have relatives or want to watch a Huskers game in Lincoln. Just don't fall asleep on I-80!

There isn't anything special about Omaha, Nebraska's largest city. Lincoln is a nice place with plenty of landmarks to gaze upon. The SAC musuem would definatly be worth a trip if you don't live too far. Go any further west of Lincoln and you're going to hit serveral hundred miles of void. Plus, Nebraskans have an unhealthy obsession with UNL football.

Massachusetts has voted republican several times in the last 60 years- 1952, 1956, and 1984- Also comparing Nebraska and the Bay state is like comparing a corn husker with a silk purse. As far as 'liberal garbage' the garbage comes from the republican party hijacking our civil rights through indimidation and illegal fund raising. Check out Armstrong Williams and the payoff he recieved- and the use of the Social Security administration to propagandize Bush's shabby lies to 'salvage the program. Was it not the GOP that opposed Soc. Security, Medicare and just about every major piece of legislation to help the common American? Please spare me from the right wing Nebraskan stupidity trip. Nebraska is rated LOW for a reason.

Nebraska is an okay state. I can understand some people being turned off by the obsession with Cornhusker football, but its a very successful team in a state with no major league pro sports teams, or any other Division I colleges, so its understandable (BTW- Omaha does a great job with the College World Series). To the person who complained that its too Republican- its the way people in Nebraska vote. Voting is one of the great characteristics of American, and Nebraskans have merely shown a tendency to vote on the right. How you like it if I criticized Washington or Massachusetts for being extremely liberal? This is just a typical liberal garbage from someone who has no tolerance for views and opinions other than their own.

Nebraska is part of the heartland of the north American continent- 'middle america' you can say those values are good or bad. The state is rated at 41 out of 50 states here for reasons that may or may not be objective. The state is not diverse- and seems rather insulated from the regions of the country that BugahaNE below says suffers from; crime, blighted cities, drugs moral decay, etc. Well all those ' bad things' are part of life- and not having them does not make a state have a high quality of life-where people desire to live. Nebraska certainly could not be called a state on the cutting edge of social change. Seems much of the culture here remains focused on thhe fear of change and 'radical ideas'.... and football. What can be stated with a fair amount of objectivity is; the majority of the nations wealth, creativity, culture, superior educational institutions, and 'most socially enlightened' people live either along the 'elitist' northeastern coast, or in the 'energy sunbronzed... I've been visiting RateItAll for a while, I enjoying reading opinions on a vast assortment of subjects. Whether I agree with them or not, that's part of the fun, I take them with a grain of salt. To have an opinion is great, but to post just silly untrue comments is uncalled for. I grew up in Nebraska, and anyone who's really ever spent time here knows its probably the most decent place to live in the country. To say Nebraska is full of slackers living off handouts from the hard workers on the East Coast????? ROFL Nebraska has the lowest unemployment rate in the country, the lowest rate of welfare recipients. Please check the welfare rolls of New York state or California. To say Nebraska is suffering from depopulation ?? Check the census, every Northeastern citys' population is much smaller today than it was 50 years ago. That of course is primarily because most people have moved to the suburbs to avoid the social and economic decay that permeates most citys in the East, with the e... Read more

If you like boarded-up buildings, high crime and dead streets than you'll like Omaha. If you like a clean, vibrant four-star city with tons of cheap eats and nice people choose Lincoln. East Omaha is just a boarded-up, decaying disaster. However, far West Omaha is growing fast because it's a half-hour away from Lincoln. Lincoln, Nebraska is way underated. Lincoln, can hold its own even when comparing it to Kansas City or St. Louis.

Nebraska is really a pretty decent place to live. I live in Lincoln and I don't know of any boarded up buildings here. I doubt there's that many in Omaha either. There used to be a lot of hippies that raised their familys here. (I'm the product of one of them.) Our two major urban centers can boast of several gay bars and there's low crime because we all get along pretty well. There's a large number of Korean and Mexican immigrants that seem to fair pretty well. It's true that there's not a lot to do here. It is quite flat. The obsession with college football makes me want to puke but all in all, it ain't too bad. (It's better than L.A. where I lived for a year. Gag!) -J.M.W.

Way too republican and closed minded- harsh climate, and flat. The people have their heads buried in the sand- and are of out touch with the real world- which yes does have those blighted cities in the northeast- and the crime, diversity, weirdness and costs of california. Nebraska is out of touch, dumb and boring. A state that has continually voted republican (except once in the last 60 years-1964) seems stuck In the past and afraid of change- stay clear. One saving grace- it does have the profit and thinker of Warren Buffett.

The few times I have visited Nebraska, I really enjoyed it. The people in Nebraska basically keep to themselves, mind their own business, and don't do anything to anyone else. I really love the people in Nebraska, I have alot of family and friends there, and they are always down-to-earth. I always love going to Lincoln as well, a very beautiful, clean city with a really nice skyline. The capital building is also an awesome sight to look at. Visit Nebraska if you want peace and quiet, and want to visit some decent people.......the cities and the country have alot to offer...

A depressing dump: for the most part, in the clutches of massive agribusinesses that don't give a flying crap about anything but their own profitibility, and populated by old, poor people living in tiny, insignificant jerkwater towns that are culturally, economically and socially deprived. A state of underproducing slackers highly dependent on handouts from the federal government that are largely funded by hardworking wage earners in the Northeast and on the West Coast. There has been a severe depopulation of Nebraska, and the so-called Great Plains in general over the past few decades, and no wonder: there's virtually nothing out there to hold onto the young people, who bolt out of there for more opportunities and a better life elsewhere. Any region or area that places so much emphasis on college football, a most trivial and inconsequential pasttime, is a location to be avoided: get some culture, or something more worthwhile to do, folks!!!

This is a great place to live! The taxes are a little high, but cost of living is low. I'm a fan of the bigger cities like Lincoln and Omaha, but the farm is fun with four-wheelers and parties. All the University of Nebraska teams are really good, so we don't need an expensive professional team. Anyone who judges Nebraska by the interstate is shallow and uneducated.

Well of course Nebraska is boring if you jsut see what is visible from the Interstate! Visit western Nebraska; it is like a whole other planet. So natural, so quiet and relaxing, and nobody around for miles at times! But if you're looking for big action, don't go here; the cities are very boring. The panhandle is good for camping; otherwise, not a vacation spot.
