I made a donation because I wanted to receive the information packet about the rain forest and give it as a gift to a teacher who teaches her students about the rain forest. In three months' time no information had been received but my gift had been processed. I asked for a refund and 6 weeks later it has not been refunded. I fear that my money is not used for what they told me it would be used for but instead to cover the cost of an inefficient and dysfunctional office. I will not donate to this organization again and do not recommend that others do either.

I began reading the Nature Conservancy magazine recently while I was in the hospital. They do a great job with that publication, and I have a hard time putting it down when I come across it. It seems that they do a good job of science-based practice while also working with business when it comes to land conservation. Their approach to environmentalism seems to be business-like rather than purely emotional. I've read some criticism of them as an organization, but any group of such a large size is bound to have their problems. It seems like they are doing a great deal to help preserve land that will benefit endangered and threatened animals and plants. My wife bought me a gift membership for my birthday this year, and it is a gift I am very happy to receive.

TNC is a great organization doing much-needed environmental conservation work. No one is better at protecting land, water, and the future for plants, animals, and people!

UPDATE: I was speaking of my experience with TNC about 20 years ago. I haven't dealt with this outfit much since then. I have received e-mails informing me that the lefto mopes took over the place, so I reduce the rating. I guess some of the board members still have some common sense, but the board doesn't have much control of the direction. ORIGINAL COMMENT: This is a good outfit that is not controlled and directed by lefto mopes!

A formerly excellent organization. After nearly a decade of working for TNC, I can tell you that they often cross the line between money for conservation's sake and conservation for money's sake. Increasingly the staff are being directed to find projects that will make money. Money tends to drive most of their conservation decisions. Its sad to see a once fine organization degrade into an abyss of greed for money and power. Still, many amazingly bright and talented people work there, however, the management of these wonderful people is in really bad shape. It is common for mid to senior level managers to be completely incompetent and care little for their staff. I agree with Max02138 about low morale, low pay, and everything else.

The Nature Conservancy is a great non-profit organization that does valuable conservation work all over the United States and throughout the world. They're non-confrontational, base all of their work on science, and operate nature preserves that you can actually visit and set your feet on. A truly international organization doing fantastic work!

An excellent organization. They preserve land all over the world, and are one of the few charities that do not harass you constantly after you send them a donation.Once in awhile, they ask you for a small donation,or they send you a small booklet showing you some of the beautiful places you have helped save from destruction.I respect what they do and how they do it.It is a shame what is happening to our planet thanks to greed and ignorance. The Nature Conservancy is doing something very positive.

The Nature Conservancy is a terrible place to work. Morale throughout the place is awful. Management does not know how to train or manage employees. Pay is extremely low for most of the workers (but pretty high for the upper level executives), and the amount of work is overwhelming. The company simply doesn't care about employees. Communication is sparse and defensive. Incompetence is rampant.

I like their non-confrontational attitude. They work with all parties, they find middle-ground positions, they buy important parcels and work deals with adjacent landowners, and generally do a magnificently effective job of protecting the last remaining wild places. I'll be a member for a long time.

A great organization that is sensible in its methods to help conserve Earth's nature. This group realizes that through private ownership much of America's land can be conserved.

The Nature Conservancy is an excellent organization. Its approach to preserving land and water worldwide (which basically involves buying, protecting, and conserving important ecological areas) makes sense. I always feel encouraged after reading the regular progress reports I receive in the mail, and it's fascinating to hear about the organization's efforts to protect a particular plant or animal. I can't think of anything more important than preserving our planet, so most of my donation money will continue to go to The Nature Conservancy. I have complete confidence that it will be used wisely.
