I'm a good singer!

I used to coach with a guy who makes his living as a musician, and has done so for twenty some years. Some studio work, back-up, bar gigs, music lessons. Nothing fancy, and he's no one anyone has ever really heard of. He seems to do all right, if not spectacularly, financially, and he seems to like what he's doing. As far as I'm concerned, that's tough to beat.

If you make it great...but almost impossible to make a living. The rich and famous are the minority...then you have the same problems as the athletes...though probably minus the injury factor.

Depends on how you define the term musician. It's a broad church ranging from talented, classically trained but poorly paid orchestral players to bozos in successful pop and rock bands who earn loads and get away with being nothing more than mediocre talents. For most people, music is one of the major pleasures in life. Engineers, doctors, agriculturalists and scientists make life possible but musicians and other artists make it pleasurable.

It's not a realistic family type profession. If you dont care about settling down it's great. A gig in a bar 3-4 nights a week could pay the bills depending on the location.

Not as easy as it looks and often financially unrewarding- Musicians bring joy into our lives.Many of the best never get a break,but continue out of love for their craft.Many are exploited by the industry-working gruelling hours on tour under contracts designed to rob them of most and sometimes all of the profits.Very few get rich,and often those who do are hardly the most talanted.

I think people who degrade any profession in the artistic realm are either jealous or regret that they never took any chances in their life careerwise.

Upside: Making albums, touring around the world, and preforming in front of an audience. Downside: The tabloids, hours of practising, the relentless media, and having to deal with your manager.

Like acting, writing, and filmmaking, you must have a lot of passion and dedication to truly make it. You have to be willing to deal with constructive criticism, the long hours and the many rehersals. You really have to have a lot of skills and talent to succeed as a musician.

As an occupation, it's bad. . .as an artistic calling, it rocks. Musicians are poorly paid and underapprectiated. (Only sudio musicians really earn a decent living.) On the other hand, i've met marginal musicians with monster egos who claimed that they were starving because people don't "understand" their music. . .get a grip.

This is the great job to have. Even if your not a world famous one, even as a hobby it's definitely worthwhile. Being a musician definitely proves that you had to work hard or do a lot of practicing if you're good at it.

Great work if you can get it, but to get it you've got to have what it takes. Like musical talent, the guts to perform, the dedication to stick with long odd hours, constant rehearsals, and on and on. The only musical talent I have is recognizing what I like and then proceeding to buy a CD or tape. As music goes I have managed to appreciate something in nearly every genre (nearly). I do know this, there really are a lot more people out there who should either keep their day jobs, sign up for a good trade school, or save every nickel they can for the short span of time it will take until the fad wears off.

I am the bassist and only female in an otherwise all-male band, and I must say, being a musician is harder than it looks. You have to really have detication when you decide to get into music. Practicing, writing songs and playing shows can seem overwhelming at times, and I must say, being a musician is certainly not for everyone. And nothing changes if (that is a big "if") you actually make it big...many people believe that famous artists are able to slack off and party all day, when in all actuality, it is the exact opposite...you get no rest, you must travel far away from home and your loved ones, and you have to have patience and determintation at all times. Knowing this personally, I have much respect for all serious musicians, whether they be a violinist in an orchestra or a tattooed frontman of a hard-rock quartet. Although I am beginning to lose hope for this profession (what with all the idiots in the music world like S**tney Spears, Wimp Bizkit and *NSANE) I think being a rock musician would be a wonderful career. My ambition to one day be a singer began when I became a superfan of Queen (thanx so much for that, y'all!) and now my only problem is that my attempts to write music are hopeless. I don't want to be like the people who hire other idiots to write bad music I am hoping that some miracle will come along one day and change the music world back to 60s-70s style, and who knows? That miracle may be one of us, or even ME! Now there's an uplifting thought! And this stereotype of musicians, especially rock stars, is inane! A friend of mine is a musician, and it looks like a pretty tough job. From what I've seen, it involves long hours in the evening and on weekends, and the pay isn't great. In addition, she constantly has to look for new gigs because her jobs generally run for a set period of time and then end. I know that many musicians teach on the side, too, which could be either good or bad, I guess. Taking everything into consideration, I'd rather have a day job and play music as a hobby or a side career. Being a musician full-time sounds like too much of a hassle.

I think it would be great if you made all that money, but, it would be embarrassing to do something like get drunk and dance on a table naked and have that on the front cover the National Enquirer.

I do a lot of music stuff (piano, composing, opera) as an amateur and would do it as a job in a heartbeat if I felt I had the talent to be able to pay the bills with it (the opera part particularly). Nothing beats spending many hard-working hours of rehearsals with a group of very talented and dedicated people and then having it all come together in an energized performance.

This was a difficult career to rate. I gave it a neutral rating because this career, like an actors, has the potential of either being super good or super bad. You could spend your whole life trying to break into the big time. But if it's your passion, I guess you gotta try it.

Personally, I love it. My neighbors, however, probably wish I would continue with lessons, or keep the "day job". :-)

yes i always wanted to be a musician. well, as a teenager i wanted to be a rock star. but i also wanted to take a shot at composing. but music theory is rather difficult for my slow-calculating mind

Being tallentless I can only imagine what its like to play infront of thousands of adoring fans, and i imagine it would be pretty damn good!!

Second only to being a writer as far as professions I imagine would be the most rewarding. And unlike writing, playing music can be a really social activity. Since I have absolutely no musical talent, I have a special appreciation for people that can sing, write songs, or play instruments.
