I don't think Steele would be re-elected party chairman, much less President. He's a bit too undisciplined for that job and I don't think he'd do much better as President. I think the Republicans picked him strictly to counteract Obama's appeal and to possibly peel off some African American votes from him. It was just a publicity stunt, one that actually ended up backfiring on them. He left the party $15 million in the red and has engendered a good deal of ill will among the state party organizations and the activist base. And to top it off, there have been various fundraising scandals attributed to him, mostly in part due to sheer incompetence, with a little bit of greed on the side. He managed to run huge tabs at luxury hotels, passing on the cost to the party. Maybe they should pair this one up with Christine O'Donnell. Now that's the winning ticket.

Steele had a few moments of truth exposure, and a few other liabilities as well, but I liked his spunk, The GOP cleaned up in the congressional election, he had a hand in that I think.

He's not just a progressive liar, he's a dirty thief, corrupt beyond political salvation. Get rid of this freak!

Next year's LSAT will have this question on it: "Michael S. Steele is to Barack H. Obama as... " And the correct answer will be: "The Monkees are to the Beatles."

Every time this guy opens his mouth something stupid comes out that the republicans end up back peddling away from. Personally, he almost (but not quite) makes Sarah Palin seem sane...

This guy's chances for the presidency (assuming he has any ambitions in that direction) decline week by week and day by day. His tenure as Republican National Chair has so far not been composed of the stuff that makes supporters line up behind him, and I don't see it getting better. He gives almost no sense of having any control or influence within his own party, and his leadership skills, assuming he has some, are invisible. Frankly, either Amos or Andy have better shots at the presidency.

Al Roker with a mustache after liposuction. In truth, he just isn't electable. He's nerdy, he has a habit of making a lot of verbal gaffes, and he's quite unpopular in his own party, especially with the most conservative elements, for various liberal Republican positions.

Update: Since he has been head of the RNC Steele has had more than a couple "foot-in-the-mouth" moments. While he has gained exposure in this position, I don't think he has transformed himself into an electable candidate for President. His best hope would be to help organize the Republican platform well enough to overturn the Democrats' majority by the end of Obama's first term. That would ensure him a prominent spot in the Republican party for a good while. If the Democrats continue to overrun Washington, then Steele's tenure as a national figure will be short lived. 11/5/2008 - Steele is a likable guy, but doesn't have a ton of visible political experience. His only elected position that I know of was as Maryland's Lieutenant Governor. Even with that position, he got there because people were voting for Bob Ehrlich, not Michael Steele. Living in an extremely Democratic state has kept him from serving in other positions. He ran for Senate but was unable to unseat Ben Cardin. He migh... Read more

Let's face it, anybody who has a chance of winning nationally has no chance with the base, which means that the person who could possibly win the White House will not get out of the primaries. Too many knuckle draggers in the party.

Let's be honest here for a moment. The Republicans in their ignorance selected Steele because he is black and no other reason at all. Should have chosen J.C. Watts At least he is well educated.
