Tue Jun 23 2009The suburbs are great, they are quieter, the people are much friendlier, there is a lot less crime, and you just feel safer, overall. The city is a differnt story. There is a lot of crime and violence, and there are many drug dealers and hobos asking for money. I really don't recommend living in the city part of Memphis, move to the suburbs if you want it to be alot safer. Trust me, I live in the suburbs. However, there had been increased crime in my area the last few months, but that seems to have settled down. I also recommmend visiting Graceland, they are always adding on to it. UPDATE: In the past 2 weeks there had been quite a few tornadoes in Memphis, and they had a few the day after I left for Detroit. I was very lucky. My Mom was sent home from work because of them. Two days later we had another bad storm go through. Too bad i missed it all. :D

Fri May 01 2009Great place to visit, swinging nightlife, lots of fun. Bad place to live, lots of crime, Corrupt government and the city needs a lot more money to pick itself up. The suburbs supposedly are nice, but the city itself sucks. If you have to move there buy a dog and a gun.

Tue Nov 07 2006Totally gross city. Trash all over the place (literally). Rude people and drivers. Some of the 'burbs are nice though.

Thu Apr 20 2006Memphis is not one of my favorite southern cities. There are far too many panhandlers. Graceland is worth the visit though. Do NOT make eye contact with anyone on the street and you'll probably be okay.

Sun Mar 26 2006DON'T MOVE HERE!!! Crime, racism, drugs, rednecks and blacknecks all over, worst customer service in US, a lot of lazy people who cant even speak English Some plusses: Nice downtown, Beale street, Graceland, a lot of good churches. If you have to live here, stay outside of Memphis, Germantown is nice and friendly.

Thu Dec 29 2005Not really that great of a city. Graceland is a landmark but otherwise not much here. Jerry Lawler is overrated.

Mon Nov 21 2005I don't know if I want to live there, but it is a great place to visit. A great sense of history and entertainment. The Civil Rights museum is my favorite attraction. It features the motel where MLK was shot. Downtown is fairly quiet except for Beale street on evening nights which offers blues entertainment, restaurants, and bars. A trolley system provides convenient transportation for tourist. Graceland and Sun Studio are top spots for tourists.

Mon May 30 2005Memphis rates low on many liveability scores. FedEx and BBQ are about all Memphis has going for it.

Tue Apr 12 2005Interesting city...great food, cool tourist attractions... I have only been to Memphis once, when I was a kid. I had never really scene blantant racism before me... And I know I can't judge the people of Memphis by this one occurence, and from a 12 yr olds eyes, but it's stayed w/ me ever since. We were at a restaurant and a white couple requested to be moved b/c a black couple had sat at the table adjacent to them. I found this bizarre and appalling (and I'm white). Anyway, it just left a lasting impression on me. I haven't been back since, but I really have no desire to visit again. Was cool to see Graceland and Mud Island... I just didn't feel safe there though...

Wed Jan 05 2005yeah, it'll grow all right, into a BIGGER piece of crap!! It rates worst on EVERY list in the book, from crime to allergy and asthma, to worst cities for children, and even LAZIEST city! This place is a trash heap full of pregidous rednecks and worst of all there is NO shopping!!!

Wed Jan 05 2005CHEAP to live in. Great Real Estate and Rental Market for Landlords. NYC may be great to live in, but for those few enlightened ones, Memphis is a great place to begin building your fortune. LIke any town it has its bad parts, but also its good parts. Memphis downtown is also being revitalized, so many new things all the time. Memphis will definately grow in the years to come.

Sun Jan 02 2005Tennessee should be ashamed of itself for allowing the poor of Memphis to live in such horrible conditions. I was totally appalled by Memphis. Run-down public housing everywhere you look. And it never gets any better...mile after mile shacks and thugs and prostitutes, etc. Memphis makes New Orleans look like Beverly Hills...and that is REALLY bad. The whole city is run-down and abandoned. Who needs gates when you totally abandon the city?

Wed Dec 15 2004I tried to like it but I absolutely couldn't. To put it lightly, just kind of rundown, dead and tacky. Speaking of tacky, Graceland!! I rest my case.

Wed Jul 14 2004One of America's funkiest, sensual, and musical cities. Great times there.

Sat Mar 13 2004Crime-ridden almost 3rd world-like city. Amazing how much Memphis and St.Louis have in common. Depressingly poor central city, kept alive by public assistance, surrounded by rich segregated suburbs.
