Wed May 18 2011Hey I Have A Grand Knowledge About That University You Should Read That McGill University is a public research university located in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The university bears the name of James McGill, a prominent Montreal merchant, from Scotland, whose bequest formed the beginning of the university. Founded in 1821, McGill was chartered during the British colonial era, 46 years before the Canadian Confederation. McGill's main campus is set upon 32 hectares (80 acres) at the foot of Mount Royal in Downtown Montreal. A second campus, the Macdonald Campus, is situated on 6.5 square kilometres (1,600 acres) of fields and forested land in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue, 30 kilometres west of the downtown campus. With 21 faculties and professional schools, McGill offers degrees and diplomas in over 300 fields of study, including medicine and law. Although the language of instruction is English, students have the right to submit any graded work in English or in French, except when learning a ... Read more

Tue May 17 2011I graduated from McGill in 2008 and I would have to say that it might be have a top-notch Faculty of Medicine but that every other department is on the decline. The Psychology department faculty is peopled by a few star professors who care more about themselves than helping their students learn. I received better service and more help from dedicated professors when I studied at Simon Fraser University and Concordia than I did at McGill. McGill needs a wake-up call or it will soon start crumbling like its buildings. McGill staff is full of lazy bureaucrats who have no idea how to provide good service to the students who pay their salaries. I would say to to McGill if you are thinking of going into Medicine. Otherwise, consider attending a university where you will actually get an education in exchange for your tuition.

Wed Dec 29 2010As a third year student in McGill faculty of management, I am quite certain that it is true indeed that McGill is probably the worst piece of shit sorry excuse of an institution, if not in Canada, then in the world. Not only are people lacking in worldly knowledge, people are also ignorant and stuck-up, very unfriendly and snobbish. Classes are designed to be evaluated on a bell-curve, hence promoting the act of "save yourself while beating down others so you can get a higher mark" attitude. Thus, group projects are done with frowns and with much frustration, and collaborative group-work is essentially non-existent. But that's okay, because most people are so anti-social that they won't talk to you anyway. The only way they can actually talk to people is if they get dead drunk that whatever foolish thing they say doesn't matter anyway. Professors are rarely helpful. They hold so called "office hours" so that they can tell you to "figure it out yourself" when you approach them, claimi... Read more

Tue Aug 17 2010Overall great university. In the business school category not so much. Here's how it stacks up in international rankings: University rankings THE-QS World 18 THE-QS Arts 14 THE-QS Life Sciences/Biomed 10 THE-QS Natural Sciences 26 THE-QS Social Sciences 17 THE-QS Engineering/Tech. 20

Fri Aug 13 2010Well it's the best university in Canada according to Maclean's. Also has the highest entrance averages. Historically very strong in my field (neuroscience).
by plymath
Mon Aug 09 2010A lot of bullocks here. Not to mention many fake rankings. The school is ranked number one in Canada both by Maclean's and the THES (I believe top 20 in the world). Of course every ranking has its set of criteria. As for ugly buildings, ever walked inside MIT's building 10?

Mon Aug 09 2010If you're in Arts in McGill I feel bad for you. Everything else is world class (faculty-wise at least). Oh yeah and the bureacracy sucks, sometimes hard to be an undergrad in some of the bigger departments. Still has a great reputation and there are many research opportunities. Great university for Science majors. It's very clear the same bunch of trolls are commenting on this page and pulling rankings out of their ass. The thing about graduate students not receiving funding is FALSE, you either have funding or you can't do graduate studies here. The minimum stipend is 18500 a year. And the problems with the Hutchison building have been fixed for a long time to my knowledge. Most of the comments are coming from UofT and Concordia fanboys with nothing better to do.

Thu Aug 28 2008I'll agree that you'll find McGill alumni all over the world. But the University is spiraling down the proverbial pooper. It's now being recognized as party school and not one for its academics. The saying "all great things must come to an end" fits beautifully with this University. Yes, at a peak it was considered the Harvard of Canada but now it doesn't even compare to UniversityOf Toronto, B.C., Calgary, Alberta, Simon Fraser University and Université de Montreal. Not too mention it's day 2 of watching drunk McGill students parade the streets yelling F#%K THE BUMBLEBEE (Concordia)...lol...

Thu Aug 14 2008I have studied in both McGill University and Université Laval. I can say McGill staff are rude and lazy. The registration office easily ignore your emails. It was unbelievable for me. I never had a bad minute in Université Laval.

Sun Jul 27 2008McGill is a great school with an even greater reputation. You will find McGill alumni all over the world. I work for a bulge bracket firm on Wall Street and on some days I run into so many McGill people that I feel like I'm back in Montreal!

Thu May 08 2008I am a recent McGill Medical School graduate. McGills curriculum prepared me well to excel at many clinical settings including Harvards Massachusetts General Hospital where I am doing my residency. From administration, through housing to teaching, McGill was superb. Anyone saying otherwise needs to do some serious introspection.

Fri Apr 04 2008Dont listen to Queen's person's comment. McGill is one of the most respected school in the world. Easily ranked as top 100 Universities in numerous rankings. 100 times better than Queen's University.

Fri Feb 22 2008This school has been nothing but a dissapointment. From housing to teaching this school is a disgrace. Admin staff is lazy and incompentent. You can never find a place to study. The building are falling apart and nobody cares. There are way better schools in Canada than this. Trust me don't go to this school.

Thu Oct 18 2007As a 3d year McGill Student I can say that the place is just horrible. Although there are a few smaller departments where you as a student will deal mainly with good, caring faculty and can avoid the B.S. and the bureaucracy, on the whole, McGill is a despicable sh*thole. Besides the crumbling facilities, the library that loses books returned by students and then charges the costs to them even when they find them later and the large portion of the faculty that would rather have a university without students, the Administration and staff could be accurately described as the worst of any major Canadian University. These people are lazy, incompetent, contemptuous of students, and only show up for work about five hours a day, 3 and half days a week. And good luck trying to get one of them on the phone or to solve problems that they themselves had caused. If Heather Munroe Blum ever were to get her big tuition hike, I would be willing to bet that the increase in funding will go to mayb... Read more

Thu Sep 13 2007Terrible administration, poor teaching, might be good for future corporate b****** or stupid blond girls studying political science because they have nothing better to do. No 1 university for bench drinkers and Paris Hilton look-a-likes. GET ME OUT OF HERE!!!!

Sun Aug 19 2007Its undoubtedly one of the best schools not only in Canada but in the world. I am a student of this University and in my 3rd year and I will again apply to this school for my Grad Studies.

Tue Jun 26 2007McGill Graduate Housing is horrible!! I have had a very bad time at this university. I am glad I am done and getting out of this miserable school. The buidling are literally falling apart, most people in the city are cold and very unfriendly - so are the professors. The only positive thing about going to McGill is the partying and drinking cause Montreal has good bars.

Mon Apr 16 2007It's my 4th and final year at McGill and I have to say that this university is amazing. It's true its not easy to get funding or scholarships and the administration is slow but so many other things make it great. The student body is diverse, international, and overall brilliant. You can make excellent contacts and will be challenged by other students you meet. The professors here are TOP quality and DO care about their students. It is extremely competitive and you are forced to learn some French if you want to fully integrate into Montreal society. This to me, is a positive and it builds your character. Also, no small-town boredom here--there is always something to do. At the same time, everything is readily accessible not like in Toronto, let's say. And for the record, the international reputation is extremely helpful when applying for jobs & internships...

Tue Dec 19 2006Not a very good school for a variety of reasons. Yes the tuition is cheap but only if you're from Quebec and you get what you pay for. There are plenty of better schools in Ontario. The main problem at this school is lack of study space. Also McGill graduate housing is really horrible. See http://3464hutchison.tripod.com for pics from (I think) the student soceity.

Sat May 20 2006I had many troubles with this school as well. Not a very pleasant environment. McGill Graduate Housing also provides terrible housing for its students.

Wed Apr 12 2006I have to say I agree. McGill is definitely one of the most underfound universities of Canada. I didn't know that till I chose to come here and found out that all master students in my group has no funding at all. Even some Ph.D have to support themselves..Compare to UBC (where I could stay), McGill is definitely poor..At UBC the tuition for international is $7200/year and schoool pays half of that automatically, but at McGill tuition is about $10000/year and you pay all! Administration at McGill sucks too..also, ppl here don't really care about students. I had this great opportunity to work with Nortel for my 16 months internship. But department terms me down by not supporting me for a work permit..The reason was that there's no such program for graduate student..

Wed Oct 12 2005This school is relatively poor in many areas. The administration is a nightmare. They always pass the buck and never get anything done. The school is seriously underfunded and provides nothing to graduates students. Your just a number and in most cases treated relatively poor. Montreal is okay if you like bars and restruants but the city is very run down and underdelevopled. There are absolutely no jobs here unless you are bi-lingual. Graduate housing is extremely bad (see 3464 rue hutchison pictures for an example: http://3464hutchison.tripod.com I have no idea whatsoever why McGill has such a good reputation. Schools like Queens Toronto Western Laurier UBC Waterloo are far better both in terms of research and facilties for thier students. There is no reason to choose this school. Maybe for Medical school its okay but otherwise seriously do NOT go to this school especially for graduate studies.

Thu Sep 02 2004McGill is the most capitalist university I went to, it does not care at all about the students. All student services are privatized (the bookstore is owned by Chapters). Probably the worst administration and campus organization you can get. Way over rated.

Sun Apr 25 2004By far Canada's top unveristy, need I say more? Diveristy of the student, top professers, wide-range of courses, beautiful campus and amazing location. McGill has it all, obvious it has a few flaws because nothing is perfect but that's life. It may take longer to get an advising appointment and students may be encouraged to do things on their own but it prepares you for the real world. McGill is competitive but so is the marketplace. McGill is an institution of higher learning, it's survival of the fittest at McGill, if you don't make the cut then you don't dererve to graduate with a McGill degree.

Sat Apr 10 2004Definitely the best school in Canada, also among the top 10 (overall) North America institutions. Very tough and changelling courses, exciting compus environment, top professors,... No matter what degree you have achieved from McGill, it will be the proud of your life time.

Wed Apr 07 2004McGill is probably the best option for those thinking of an MBA: - Best ROI - Superb mix of international and experienced peers and teachers. - You'll get prestidge: they call it the Harvard of Canada, it is the best known Canadian option. -Location, location location: magnificent Montreal! Just a few hours form Toronto or New York if you ever need a gib anglophone city. -The most international program in the NAFTA region.

Thu Jan 29 2004Well, technically I am not enrolled in the business school ie. the MBA program. However, I am a BCOM student (that is McGill's term for an undergraduate management student). While the core management courses are at sometimes questionable, McGill's reputation, faculty, and diversity make it an excellent choice. As an undergraduate student you are given the ability to take management courses in conjunction with those in the arts and sciences. This allows one to gain a greater perspective, and provides a relief from the monotany of the management core. Montreal, is also an undeniable benefit of studying at McGill, it provides numerous cultural diversions and an atmosphere conducive to studying business. I have enjoyed both the classes and the diverse student body. I highly recommend this school!

Mon Dec 16 2002I'd agree with Groo. But I've definetly had fun so far in Montreal. In Montreal you can learn French, if you are so inclined, which is a bonus. But the school itself has been a disappointment. Student bodies are internationl everywhere now, as our successful alumni when you are talking about the world's best b-schools. I'm not sure why that translates into 5 stars. If you could place an Ivey or Sobey school of business in Montreal you would definetly have the perfect school! Until then you have to make your choice!

Tue Dec 10 2002As a McGill student I can offer some insight. McGill enjoys a good reputation in Canada, I don't think that this is directly rated to the business school though. Canada's graduate business powers are Western, Saint Mary's & perhaps Schulich (York). One of the benefits of McGill is its location in Montreal -no need to tolerate London, Ontario. Another advantage is really cheap tuition but you get what you pay for. If I could go back in time I would definetly have looked very seriously at Saint Mary's University in Halifax. It might be North America's best bang for your buck.

Tue Apr 09 2002Despite the fact that McGill is relatively undefunded in comparison to its US counterparts, the school has maintained an impressive faculty and rolled out a slew of successfull alumni. The mere internationalism of both the student body and faculty are reason enough to attend giving those MBA grads an edge in the global economy.

Sat Jun 23 2001international reputation is not enough to be among the elite b-schools.
