Tue May 19 2015The War with Iraq was not just an intelligence failure. More than that, it was a policy failure. The Bush Administration decided to topple Saddam Hussein and then concocted a bogus case to justify the war. Blaming bad intelligence is a smokescreen the war's architects are using to evade blame, to cover up the original lie. The big policy failure laid in the neoconservatives believing that preventative war was justified because Saddam was undeterrable. But he wasn't suicidal, and if he ever obtained WMD's, he could not have used them or given them to others without facing devastating retaliation. It was fundamentally an unnecessary war. The war has created a lot of problems: it served to spread instability throughout the entire region, has enabled very reactionary elements that were not present there beforehand to take root, and there was no real exit strategy in place. Iraq itself is a deeply divided society that has required years of military investment, over $3 trillion. No ... Read more

Tue Apr 29 2008Yeah, tell that to the terrorists. Maybe they will listen. No, wait, why should they? They are promised 70 virgins, much more than any earthly government can promise.

Wed Aug 16 2006Sure its just a bumpersticker slogan from 40 years ago, but if you consider it a shorthand call for pacifism, you could argue that it has worked for Switzerland and the Mennonites for centuries. Tibet might not be as successful an application.

Tue Nov 15 2005I heard these words in a song one time: Make love not war sounds so absurd to me. We can't afford to take these words lightly, or else our world will truly rest in peace.

Fri Dec 10 2004UPDATE: Specifically to Scarlet's comment that all war should be conducted as a last resort, I agree, but we all hold different definitions of what last resort means. 9/10/01 would have been a perfect time to attack Afghanistan, in my opinion. If 6,000 years of human history have taught us anything it is that when you have something valuable, someone wants to take it from you, even if they take it just to deprive you of it. In the early 21st century, there are barbarian anarchists who want to destroy the US and its lifestyle and economy. If you don't believe that, there isn't much for us to discuss (foreign policy-wise) further. The rest would be just discussions of personal style. ORIGINAL COMMENT 12/6/04: Relative to the question to the left, who said this first? my guess would be Abbie Hoffman. He claims to have originated the phrase, never trust anyone over 30, and what if they gave a war and nobody came? I know, I know, what a genius!

Mon Dec 06 2004Nah. . .make love AND war. War is a necessary evil at this time in human history. Peaceniks are geeks.

Mon Dec 06 2004War should only be a last resort;diplomacy should rule the day. Pre-emptive attacks--bombing someone to the Stone Age because we think they MIGHT be a threat is just wrong. UPDATE: So Peaceniks are geeks, and waging war is cool. Guess I need to keep up with the times.

Mon Dec 06 2004If it wasn't for war, we wouldn't be able to live in a free deomocratic society such as the US and voice our opinions on a website such as this!!! War should not be the first option, but is the ultimate answer for the elimination of evil. Actions speak much louder than words. Nothing comes easy and hard work pays off. How else are we going to defeat the threat of evil, debate them to death?! or say, Oh please don't hurt us MR. Terrorist, don't attack us again! NO, you take action. When a child misbehaves, is it effective to say, stop that? NO you discipline the child. Actions speak much louder than words.
