Mon Sep 28 2009Excellent Chicago style pizza. I love cornbread crusts and they do theirs very well. The sauce is tangy and the they don't skimp on the ingredients. The garlic bread is fantastic. It comes with a roasted clove of garlic, that is as easily spreadable as butter. If you haven't had roasted garlic before, I recommend trying it. It has a surprisingly sweet taste to it.

Fri Jun 12 2009Nomnomnom! Sooo tasty! The corn meal crust makes it different than the normal pizza. The pieces are huge and filling! A large pie feeds about 4-5 so you get your moneys worth. One down side is that they only take cash. Can be kind of a pain if you forget before you go.

Sun Feb 08 2009This pizza place is pretty small, dimly lit, and cozy. The host told us that the wait was about 30 to 45 minutes. We didn't mind, because we had nothing else to do. The host let us pre-order while we wait for our seats. We finally sat at a table almost an hour later. The waitress was very pleasant. We ordered the 12 inch deep dish speciality classic pizza. The pizza came out pipping hot! It was soo good. When I first saw the pizza, I was like... euwh, it's full of tomatoes... where are the toppings? I was hungry, so, I took a slice and MAN>>> it was DELICIOUS! The pizza had the cheese as the bottom layer, the toppings as the next layer, and fresh tomatoes and sauce as the top layer. So, that's why I didn't see any toppings. I would highly recommend this place to anyone. Our bill was about $23-$24 (including tax) for three people. I can't wait to go back!! Sat Jul 12 2008Hot dang, the ratings finally mesh with the actual quality on this site! Seriously good pizza, i was pleasantly surprised and impressed with the quality. Deep dish is hard to find, and good deep dish is even harder. The tomatoes used in the sauce are obviously vibrant and fresh. Good quality cheese and ingredients. The crust (as with all deep dish) was flaky and tasty. I will say the only minor gripe (this was very minor) about the taste was a hint of dried oregano or something in the crust, that was a bit of a contradiction to the otherwise good quality. The quality of the pie was A+. I only got take-out but the place seemed relaxing and casual. Finally I can add a good pizza joint to my repertoire!

Thu Jul 10 2008My girlfriend and I eat here weekly, usually take-out, but dine-in is pleasant too. While they finish up your order, you usually have a few minutes to enjoy a beer at the bar. Staff is pleasant, and though they don't open until 5, sometimes they will let you phone in your order early, and will have a hot pie ready for you. Good for grandma and grandpa when they need to be fed and in bed early, and the pizza tastes even better the next day reheated. Love this place.

Sun Dec 30 2007Though I have not been to any of the famous deep dish pizza capitals of the world, I would have to say Little Star is the best pizza that can be found in the city. It's dark windows and discreet sign make this place hard to discriminate from the shabby looking bars and dirty buildings on divisadero, but once inside, it is as if you stepped into a busy, chic restaraunt filled with trendy 20-somethings. Try the classic pizza, it made me realize the meaning of a pizza "pie"!

Tue Dec 11 2007Hard for me to rate chicago style pizza in california because i used to live in chicago. i've tried a few places though, and this was probably the best. Average service, too dark inside to see anything or even read the menu (which always makes me a little nervous - what are they hiding?). Cash only is a little rough though. pretty overpriced as well.

Sat Aug 18 2007What is the hype about this place? The pizza was average, the tomato sauce completely overbearing to hide the fact that, well they don't put much of the fresh ingredients. The service wasn't good at all, borderline unpleasant. This place doesn't compare to Old Chicago in Petaluma or Chicago's pizza in Palo Alto. The worst thing is the cash only which is not indicated on the outside or the at the front desk!! Is this real?? I still don't understand how CitySerach rates the restaurants. I see quite a few bad/avarage reviews but Little StarPizza still rates 5 stars... I am starting to understand why more and more people use Yelp instead!!

Mon Aug 06 2007Once I discovered Little Star, there was 1 less reason to trek to east bay to visit friends. No longer spend time, gas & bridge toll to eat at Zachary?s with Little Star in SF. Glad there are now 2 locations. Take out makes it even easier & faster to enjoy. Love the deep dish pizza with chunks of tomatoes.

Sun Apr 22 2007This is one place I can imagine having pizza without meat. Their Little Star signature pizza had a perfect combination of flavors. All you taste is spinach, cheese, tomato,herbs and a buttery flaky crust. Yummm!!! Even the thin crust peperoni pizza I got for my kids was very nicely done. Thin crust, good cheese, and pepperoni with the right amount of salt and spice. The sausage they use in their pizza could have been better. The chicken wings didn't measure up. Salad was O.k. Go there for their pizza. Much better than Zacharys. Whats up with the Zacharys tomato sauce? Its like a can of S&W diced tomatoes were liberally dumped over the crust. Highly overrated. Go to Little star instead, if you want good deep dish.

Thu Mar 22 2007I can't really begrudge people who think this pizza is actually good; there's not much to compare it to in the Bay Area. So by default, it's probably the best Chicago-style pizza in the city. Couple of things. The crust had great consistency, but it was bland. Most Chicago pizzerias like Gino's, and Due are known for a more buttery and flavorful crust. This place wasn't up to par with them or with Zelda's in Sacramento. Still the pizza was OK, their sauce was rich and spicy, but the quality of the toppings needs some work especially since they're charging $25 for a 12 inch pie. Their sausage was similar to the pre-formed chunks you see at Domino's, and the pepperoni was nothing spectacular. Round Table's toppings are definitely more high end than the stuff they use here. Sat Jan 27 2007Not sure what all the hype is about. I've been to Chicago, home of stuffed/deep dish pizza. Tried out Little Star too. But in the end, Zachary's in the East Bay wins hands down. Friends who used to live in Chicago rave about Little Star - and I just don't get it. I'm appalled that Little Star was voted "Best Pizza" in the Best of Citysearch. I found the pizza at Little Star to be greasy and not very flavorful. Plus waiting forever for a table is a real hassle - a real BIG hassle. And then there's the cash only policy which is also pretty ridiculous. And parking around that crummy neighborhood is a bummer too. I won't go back to Little Star. Even though it's a hike, I would rather drive across the Bay Bridge to get the real deal at Zach's.

The placed was filled with yuppies and an unfriendly waitstaff, but I figured if the pizza was as good as everyone said it was I could always get take-out next time. My friend and I ordered the deep dish mediterranian pizza (listed as a "special"). I don't care for olives or onions so we ordered half with and half without. Unfortunately our waiter incorrectly told us which side was which and i ended up spitting out an onion laden piece and eatting less than i should have. On top of this, the pizza arrived luke warm to our table. If domino's can get a pizza to my house in 30 minutes steaming hot, why couldn't this place get a pizza from it's oven to my table before it cooled down??? Also, i recommend staying away from anything with chicken in it as it is ground chicken instead of nice pieces of white meat. Sat Nov 11 2006As a former Chicago resident and lover of its pizza, I just about always applaud new deep dish restaurants. But, I can't for Little Star. First the pizza is not that great. It has far less flavor than other recently opened restaurants in San Francisco or old standards in the east bay. The crust doesn't bring much to the pizza, either, as do the best of Chicago's pizza places. But, the worst part of Little Star is the service. Our server had a "This restaurant is so cool, you don't belong here attitude." I felt like her first objective, rather than to get us food, was to get us out. It didn't really matter to her whether or not we ate or enjoyed our meal. I am shocked to see "Kid Friendly" on the amenities list Citysearch provides. The restaurant is too loud to hear kids' voices and too dark for them to do anything but look at other people's conversations. Sun Oct 15 2006It's magical. They've mastered the deep-dish pizza, particulary the crust. It's buttery, flakey, crunchy, chewy, gooey...it's DAMN good! I've eaten deep-dish in Chicago, and at Zachary's...and honestly, they couldn't hold Little Star's "jock strap!" If I had one criticism, it would be the service. It would be great if the servers/hostesses smiled a bit more and gave up on the "I'm cool" attitude...they're not fooling anyone. But look past that and experience the best deep-dish anywhere in the world!

But, we have walked away from the place after checking the wait length several times (before shows at the Indep.), which averages 1-2 hours during peak. My husband and I went to LS at 7 pm on a Sat. Not too long of a wait--so we got a beer at the bar and sipped on it before we got a table (only about 15 min.). The Boont Amber was very yummy. We split a mixed salad and a deep-dish pizza with pepperoni, roasted garlic, and pepperocinis. This was THE best pizza I've ever had in my life--actually should call it something else- as it should not be classified with the mislabeled food called "pizza" I've had most of my life--THIS type of pie should be designated "the only PIZZA". Mon Sep 04 2006I am on a deep-dish pizza odyssey: - 10 times to Little Star, SF - 1 to Zachary's, Berkeley - 4 to Patxi's, SF - 1 to to Pizzeria Due, Chicago - Little Star has the best crust, and fantastic everything else, and edges out the others as the best of the list. That says a lot considering the competition. The pizza is just that good. The chic atmosphere hopefully doesn't skew my opinion. 10 out of 10. - Zachary's. The only con I'd say is waiting to get a table during peak hours. Other than that, this place is fantastic. Very reasonable prices too, and good beers on tap :)

Thu Aug 10 2006The Citysearch editorial pretty much nails it on the head on this little gem. The only drawback is the long wait for a table. The scene is young and lively - this is a happening place. On the Saturday night we visited, the wait was a ridiculous 90 minutes. We opted for take away and ate our pies in the hotel room. The house salad is fantasticly fresh and the signature Little Star deep dish is out of this world. It probably would have been even better if eaten fresh out of the oven, but it was still fantastic. It may not be authentic but it sure is good. We are back in Miami craving Little Star pizza!

I have read alot of the reviews and must say; Regardless of what you read, this is the best deep dish in SF and perhaps a top 10 Nation Wide ranking...and I have lived in Chicago! As for complaints I have read about the crowd... yeah it gets busy, you have to wait a long time for a table...but thats because it is a small place with great food. If ya don't like waiting...order it ahead of time and pick it up for Take out. NOW AS FOR THE CREDIT CARD NON ACCEPTING DILEMA...well I own my own side business setting up companies with credit card services. Allthough it does cost money to accept credit cards... it doesn't cost that much unless they were being over charged. They should be paying 1.63% plus .20 cents per transaction...granted, it can add up...but making your customers pay .25 cents plus their bank fee (which depending on their bank range from $1.00 to $2.50) is not right. Mon Jun 05 2006I've never actually eaten in the restaurant, preferring to park illegally on the street and take my pie home to inhale, but the interior and vibe certainly is enticing. Even more so are the deep-dish pizzas. I've always opted for a sort of "supreme" pie, but was recently prompted to order a special - a BBQ chicken with green apple. I usually don't like chicken, and find BBQ pizzas to be far too sweet. Little Star's version is a foodie delight it was simply fabulous. A good zing with the sauce, countered with the tart apple and red onion. Heaven.

Wed May 24 2006Little Star got an attitude. The waiters are snobby and rude. When I asked what is your favorite pizza, she said "I've been working here too long, they all taste the same," while looking off in the distance. As soon as we finished our food, we were finishing our wine, and the manager? came over and said "can you please finish up as we have people waiting." He did not ask nicely and he could have offered us a place by the bar as we hadn't even finished our wine. VERY rude.

Fri Mar 24 2006Little Star recently decided to stop accepting credit cards. They said it was because if they didn't they would have to increase prices. Unfortunately Little Star took things a step further and decided, like many such restaurants, to take advantage of this new policy. They have installed their own ATM and are charging their customers to get cash. I find this shameful. If they object to paying credit card companies, that is fine. But to try to make more money off customers and pretending it is because they dont want to pay credit card companies is a joke.

Mon Mar 20 2006Little star pizza has the ambiance of a cozy loft which makes for a personal experience with your eating neighbors, but at the same time makes you feel confortable. The pizza ingredients are exceptional, and the style of pizza is for ones own taste. Happy hour prices are very good, and I give the cheesecake a five star rating; the best I ever had.

Mon Feb 27 2006I really enjoyed their thin slice chicken pesto pizza. Amazing taste! I would have never thought of this combination because I'm a fan of your typical NYC slice. I definitely like the combination not heavy and just right amounts of chicken and pesto to make it a perfect slice. Also, make room for their delicious homemade cheesecake. I wouldn't miss this slice of heaven for fans of Junior's cheesecake. It's amazingly close to the original cheesecake. Try it out and taste it for yourself. You will not be disappointed.

They serve you a nice pizza--and then tell you that they no longer accept credit cards, cash only please!! They've even installed an ATM so you can get your cash for them!! This kind of hostility to customers doesn't deserve patronage--get your pizza elsewhere. They're hardly the only pizza in the neighborhood.

Adding to the hubbub is a jukebox blasting vintage Madonna, Snoop and the Smiths. The Food It's hard to find deep-dish in San Francisco, but this place nails it. There's also a twist: The young chef/co-owner uses a crunchy cornmeal crust and coats pans with butter, giving his creations sweetness. The signature Little Star is the crown jewel--stuffed with a smooth mix of spinach, ricotta, feta and mushrooms, then topped with a thick, zesty red sauce. Those longing for traditional crust should order a cracker-thin variety. Chunky green peppers dot the classic Italian combo, while creativity is found in the not-too-cheesy white pie (garlic, olive oil, mozzarella, zucchini, tomato and feta).

Fri Jan 20 2006I thought I'd tasted heaven when I had my first slice of Little Star's thin crust pizza, but then I tried their deep dish. Absolutely ORGASMIC! The crust is cooked to perfectiion. The sauce is habit-forming. They use just the right amount of cheese and it passes the "good the next day for lunch" test. I wish I was more eloquent so I could convey how great the pizza truly is at Little Star. Their Mixed Greens Salad is delicious, too. I only wish they would deliver, because while they've got a fun atmosphere and great drinks, it can be a bit loud if you want to have romantic slice with your honey.

Sat Jan 07 2006Best Chicago style pizza I had in the Bay Area. I had the vegetarian deep dish. The crust was very good and buttery, almost taste like the pan pizza from pizza hut. The sauce was also very good, many different flavors in it. Only thing I'm dissapointed in was the size. I ordered a 9 inch deep dish, I could have easily had another slice or two. And for that, it was $16. I'll have to give 5 stars to the pizza but a average rating for the value. Not taking anything away from the pizza, the taste and size of the pizza fit the price. Overall I do recommend it if you love deep dish pizza, or want to try deep dish pizza.

Sun Jan 01 2006I got the deep dish combo. The blend of pizza flavors is actually better at Old Chicago in Petaluma, but they nailed the overall preparation. The crust was excellent. It is not easy to get this right on a deep dish. I also inspected their thin crust and it appears they got that right too. The parking for dinner (6 pm) took me 45 minutes to troll for a spot. Beware, the natives double park and wait till there's an opening. I recommend you adopt this strategy. Just hope someone doesn't decide to compete on your street. The is the best overall deep dish pizza I have ever tasted in the Bay area. If it weren't for the parking, I'd become a regular customer. In June of 2006 I tried their thin crust pizza and it was good, but the deep dish far outshone this pie. Pay the extra $ and get the dish. Its well worth it. I had to park as far down as the park. So even with all my strategy it was the best I could do. Parking is nearly impossible so take out is the way to go.

Wed Dec 07 2005It takes forever to get a table and they don't do reservations. The pizza takes a long time to cook. The bar area is super small. There's no TV to watch the game, why is it so dark?. Did I mention the ridiculously long wait. And it is THE BEST (CHICAGO STYLE) PIZZA IN THE BAY AREA. You have to try it! This isn't your regular pizza shack. It is "fancy-smancy" pizza and it is darn GOOD. The corn meal crust is incredible. It is hard to compare a pizza restaurant that pairs Kermit Lynch (awesome place) imported wines from France to a Blondies or even Zachareys where soda and beer are the beverages of choice.
