Sat May 01 2010After moving from Brooklyn, NY to Portland, OR we were engaged to be married. I was greatly looking forward to doing the invitations and thought this would be one of my favorite aspects of planning our wedding, until I visited stationery stores in the Portland area. The customer service was vitually non-existent with sales staff at multiple stores barely saying more than "hello". I was so frustrated that my excitement about our invitations had faded. I had done custom holiday cards and stationery through Lion in the Sun while living in Brooklyn and recalled the incredible customer service that I had received with both experiences. Fortunately we had a trip planned to New York and I knew that a visit to Lion in the Sun was in order -- and they did not disappoint! Melinda assisted us while we combed through the incredible selection of custom stationery books that they have available. Their options range from budget friendly to over-the-top invitations with everything in between. The ... Read more

Mon Apr 05 2010I had a very small budget, and was apalled by how much wedding invitations cost at other stores and online. Lion In The Sun worked with us to customize the perfect wedding invitations wihtin our budget. Melinda was full of great ideas and was very patient. I am so glad I met LITS and recommend them to anyone! Thanks for making this a fun part of our wedding planning!

Wed Feb 03 2010Though I haven't used the custom services here, I'm duly impressed every time I visit by the selection of fun, beautiful, and classy cards. Sure, they're not cheap (usually $3-6), but I think it's worth it to find a card that's appropriate and not silly or crappy. I've come in for cards for congratulations, weddings, sympathy, birthday, and no reason. Most cards are blank in the inside, which suits me perfectly.

Sun Jan 31 2010My fiance and I are originally from NY but now live in Maryland. We spent months looking for that perfect invitation everywhere - on line, in stores... we decided to check out some places in NY while visiting family in Brooklyn and drove by Lion in The Sun a few times on our way to other destinations. On a whim we decided to just to "pop in" - oh what luck! Even though we didn't have an appointment and it was close to closing time they were still happy and eager to help us. Kalin was our rep - and she was amazing.. so knowledgeable about the inventory of designers and full of ideas to help us be creative and stay within budge, but most of all so patient! Since we were from out of town and had to head back - we had to rely a lot on follow up emails and phone calls - but they never missed a beat. Between Kalin and Melinda they took care of everything - even when we changed our minds about the design and had to come up with something new... they were helpful, creative and flexible - and... Fri Dec 18 2009They really know their stuff here, but this is not a cheap option. If you want something done very well, this is a good place to go.

Wed Aug 05 2009We had out wedding invitation done here, and it was a great experience!! We knew we were going to design our own invitation, but we wanted some help with the technical aspect of letterpress printing. We were greeted by the cheerful Melinda, and she immediately pulled out boxes of custom design samples for us to look at. And she used the custom samples to explain to us the different things we can do, and pros and cons of using different printing methods to achieve our design goal. She is very knowledgeable and she understands immediately what we want and gives great suggestions. For example, she suggested us to go with a larger printing company, because they usually have more competitive pricing, and since we are not using the design of the stationer anyway, why pay extra? I should also mention that they carry a lot of great stationers whose designs are very unique and beautiful, including some local brooklyn designers. We sat there for a long time and flipped through a lot of bo... Read more

Wed Jul 08 2009I looked everywhere to find the perfect invitation for the right price. i assumed the best prices would be online and i was very wrong. For my budget(which was quite small), they were able to create exactly what my fiance and I wanted- a trifold invite with original artwork. Ashley, one of their talented designers, took my ideas and brought it to life! The entire staff is responsive, friendly and...Wonderful and i am not one to throw around complements. This has been most positive wedding planning experience yet!

Wed Jul 08 2009My fiancé and I decided to use Lion In The Sun for our wedding invitations since we reside in Park Slope and our experience with them has been nothing short of spectacular. Melinda and her staff are very attentive and extremely knowledgeable. She and her team gave us exactly what we wanted, understood our taste and never tried to push us over budget. When you walk in to the store, someone is there to help you right away and you always feel like you are being taken care of. Their product line is extensive, their rates are very reasonable and their turn around time is really fast. All in all a top-notch place to go!

Mon Jul 06 2009More than a paperie Lion in the Sun is about connecting with people either with a written card bought there or with friends who come together there. If there were an espresso bar no one would want to leave. Ever. Really, it just feels good. It's a mood lifter in these tough times and I always leave with a spring in my step. Hoorah!

Sun Jul 05 2009I used to go here a lot for basic greeting cards because it's close to where I live. (Paper Love has a much more inspired selection! 7th ave and Lincoln) But I definitely wouldn't count on them for anything you really need to get done. I tried to get simple baby shower invites here, and found the staff to be pretty unreliable and remarkably rude. I'll skip it next time.

Sun Jun 28 2009I love The Lion in the Sun!! The staff is fabulous. The service is always above and beyond. They are warm, personal, efficient and so helpful. They designed my wedding invitations with the same care as a small casual baby shower for 25. Regardless of my budget they take each of my orders as if they were their own! Melinda, Mallory and the whole staff are knowledgeable and creative, they help me to find the most beautiful expression for each invite & each occasion wether spending twenty-five dollars or one thousand. They make a stressful process fun!

Thu Jun 11 2009My fiance and I came to Lion in the Sun for our wedding invitations after reading some positive reviews online and having some not so positive experiences at other stores. I'm so glad we did!! Melinda and her amazing team helped us create custom invitations that we'll cherish for years to come. After our first consultation, we felt confident that they understood our personalities and the look we wanted to achieve for our invites. Mallory created some amazing custom artwork for our invitations that make them truly one-of-a-kind! We really can't say enough good things about our experience here. Planning a wedding can certainly be stressful, but having Lion in the Sun as part of your team will make the invitation process fun!

Wed Apr 01 2009We love the staff at Lion in the Sun!! We worked with Melinda and team on our wedding invitations, and the experience was ideal-- relaxed, personalized, and a lot of fun. Any bride (or groom) will attest to the fact that wedding planning is incredibly stressful-- it's such a relief to work with a vendor who makes everything simple. Oh, and our invitations are ridiculously gorgeous. Highly recommended!!!

Mon Mar 09 2009This store is amazing! My fiance and I got gorgeous wedding invitations from them. They have a terrific selection, from fancy traditional invites to unique and funky designs. And, as other reviewers noted, they're full of creative ideas for personalizing things. They helped us create a wedding "icon" that we used on our save-the-dates and that we plan to use on our programs and place cards. Melinda was incredibly helpful through the whole process, offering advice on wording and etiquette issues and really going the extra mile to help us create a consistent, unique look for all our wedding stationary. She and everyone on her staff were friendly and a pleasure to work with. Plus, they have lots of other items besides wedding invitations--I also picked up some pretty thank-you notes for my shower, and I plan to come back for unique, funky holiday cards.

Mon Jan 26 2009The people working here are extremely nice and down to earth - they helped with my wedding invitations and, though I was clueless about the whole invitation process, they were extremely helpful and pleasant to work with. They had a great range of unique products and they seemed like they are able to work with those who have no idea what they want and those who are very high maintenance. It is definately worth trecking out to Park Slope for the selection and reasonable prices.

Sat Nov 29 2008I'm a New Yorker. As a New Yorker, I have been exposed to the stationers in NY - the highest end at Bergdorfs, the good but not particularly special Papyrus and Kate's Paperie, and the lower rungs of print-it-yourself invites. When I walked into Lion in the Sun without any idea of what I was looking for, the women helped me narrow it down. They knew every design that might work, what book it was located in, and if it wasn't obvious if a color or a paper was available, they would call the maker and figure it out. The thing that is so shocking about this place is that you get the impression that the women who work there love this stuff because they know everything about it and yet don't feel the need to "sell" you on anything. I walked out of there in one day with all of my wedding decisions made.

Sat Nov 29 2008Lion in the Sun was my first and only choice of stationers for our wedding invitations. Not only does Lion in the Sun have the best selection of popular names but they also carry unique invitations from smaller designers and presses. This alone makes the trip to Park Slope worthwhile. But it is the expertise and personal attention from owner, Melinda Greenberg and her friendly staff that makes this shop exceptional. We found the perfect invite because Melinda suggested we look in "just one more book." In addition Melinda and the staff are full of creative ideas on how to mix and match the features of each stationery collection to achieve the perfect look. And, the shop has in-store printing capability to help you with any additional coordinating elements as well. Lion in the Sun answered all my questions and came up with quick and easy solutions that helped me stay on budget. Yes, you can find stationery online, bu there is no simply no substitute for personal service.

Sat Oct 11 2008I was going to order my daughter's Bat Mitzvah invitations on line and now I am glad I did not-Melinda was such an expert that I felt completely confident in my ordering. She was able to tell us what we needed to order, most commonly used wordings and common things people forget to do. She was able to take charge without taking over....and she worked well with my 12 year old also! She even recommended a photographer when asked. What a relief!

Sat Sep 20 2008I was reluctant to order my invitations online, and after my visit to Lion in the Sun, I was glad I didn?t. The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. They made the invitation selection a pleasurable experience. I highly recommend them. I spent the about the same as I would have if I would have bought them online, but without any of the uncertainty. The staff?s number one priority was my satisfaction!!!!

Sat Sep 20 2008We used Lion in the Sun for our save the dates, wedding invitations, thank you cards, place cards, menus, and every other stationery need we had for our wedding. Our experience was phenomenal from start to finish. Melinda helped us design save the dates and invitations that were just a perfect blend of my and my husband's taste, and the end product was unique and beautiful stationery that really spoke to both of us. We received endless compliments on all of the pieces we created there. I cannot say enough about the customer service, the attention to detail, the personalized assistance, and the individualized input that Melinda gave for each and every item we purchased there. As other reviewers said, we were so lucky that we happened upon the store and I truly can't imagine having gone anywhere else. We will certainly go there for all of our future stationery needs and we feel so lucky that they helped us cultivate our own creativity for the wedding. Thanks so much Melinda and ev... Read more

Fri Sep 19 2008We used Loin in the Sun to create our daughter's birth announcements. The service was friendly and fast. They helped us design the cards and they had a great selection of post-consumer recycled paper products to choose from. This is a great local stationary shop in the Slope. I would use them again as their prices are good and you get to work with a real person rather then relying on a online design tool.

Sat Sep 13 2008We chose Lion in the Sun for our wedding needs by chance based on their convenient location for us, but having worked with them I now know I would come back even if we moved to the other side of the country! Everyone there was wonderful with us and as others have noted extremely patient and supportive. Over several months we worked with them on our save the dates, invitations, place cards, programs and guest book, and we had a wonderful experience at every turn. We worked primarily with Kellie and Mallary, although the sense I got was that everyone there was great. Their response to our questions was always prompt and thorough, they always got us our materials on time or early, and they often even suggested ways that we could save money by making simple changes to the design - I never felt like we were being pressured to spend more than we needed to. Everything turned out beautifully and we got many compliments on all of the various pieces, but even more than the quality of the work I ... Read more

Mon Jul 28 2008I came to Lion In the Sun after a number of frustrating experiences with some other stationary shops who left my fiance and me to our own devices after pointing unenthusiastically towards their books of wedding invitations. At Lion in the Sun we found informed, thoughtful, and creative invitation specialists who provided us with an education about paper, process, and design. Lion in the Sun has a variety of invitations from boutique letterpress designers to less expensive, and as beautiful, alternatives. Our invitation specialist worked with us through the whole process, from ordering through to production, guiding and making great suggestions along the way. Finding the right invitation that set the tone for my wedding was a priority for me. The women at Lion in the Sun understand this and know just how to approach showing a great selection of invitations to their brides.

Fri Jul 25 2008I had to add my review, because you can't say enough good things about Lion in the Sun. We had our wedding invitations done there, and they are beautiful. Melinda walked us through hundreds of options, using her keen eye and ear to help us tune into what we were looking for. We were even able to incorporate our custom graphic design with the exact ink, font, paper, envelope, etc. She had a great knowledge of all her products, and found a match to our vision. The end result was EXACTLY what we imagined. Her helpful suggestions about the whole invitation process were invaluable.

Thu Jul 24 2008I got my wedding invitations done here. I cannot say enough good things about this place. They understood what I wanted, they had a wonderful selection including local artists, they were extremely helpful with wording and other etiquette questions - everything was seamless and flawless from my perspective. The invitations are beautiful. They even give you a glue stick when you pick them up to seal all the envelopes.

Wed Jul 23 2008I am planning a wedding and I was so relieved to find Lion in the Sun! They were extremely friendly and helpful in that they were able to tell me when I should send save the dates out, when I should send invitations out, and provide tons of sample designs and language for our invitations. They were happy to spend time with me and even had the exact design I wanted and could not find at other stores! I am very excited about doing all of my wedding printing through them!

Sun Jun 15 2008I just can't say enough about Lion in the Sun. While looking for invitations for my upcoming wedding, I found other big name outfits cold and really impersonal. ('The books of invitations are over there,' was the best involvement I got from staff at those competitors.) But not so at Lion in the Sun. When my fiance and I walked in to the shop -- on a busy weekend, no less -- we were greeted by a staff member who worked with us tirelessly to talk through just what it is we were looking for from our invites. She brainstormed ideas, working with us to create custom invitations that we didn't even know were possible. She guided us through every detail, from wording to typeface, and suggested several ways we could get the invites of our dreams in our price range. All in, the owner and staff at Lion in the Sun spent about 4 1/2 working directly with me to get everything just right. With the blase attitude of vendors in New York's wedding industry, Lion in the Sun is a gem, not just f... Read more

Sat May 24 2008I typically don't write reviews for anything, but I have to say I had a wonderful experience working with everyone at lion in the sun. They were extremely knowledgeable, creative and patient. They have an amazing selection of all kinds of stationary, and it was really a pleasure to work with individuals who really knew what they were doing and were able to work with my budget and needs. They are the best.

Fri Jan 11 2008I can't say more positive things about the folks at Lion in the Sun--not only are they completely professional with outstanding customer service, they are friendly and extremely knowledgeable about their products. I was planning a September wedding, met with Melinda and felt that she instantly "got" what it was I was envisioning for my invitations. Melinda put my mind at ease from the very beginning, taking the time to explain the different cost options, the differences for print options--any and all questions were answered (they are very patient!), I never once felt intimated or judged....it was clear they were there to provide what I wanted...and perhaps more importantly, put my mind at ease thoughout the entire process. Planning a wedding can be stressful, but with Lion in the Sun doing my invites, I felt 100% confident that I was in good hands and could relax a bit. In fact, I ended up ordering too few invites (my husband invited 36 additions last minute)--this could have been a to... Read more

Sat Nov 10 2007First, let me start off by saying I have never written a review on Citysearch or Zagats or any of the other sites for user ratings. But my experiences at Lion in the Sun have me logging on to rave about this incredible Park Slope paperie. When I got engaged, we went to Kate's paperie to do the save the dates. While they came out beautiful, the process was not one I was pleased with. I had to keep calling to check on the arrival date and the proofs and the salespeople were generally unresponsive. I was treated like a dispensable and replacable customer despite the very expenseive order I had placed. For my invitations, I decided to try Lion in the Sun. What a world of difference! Not only were my invitations exquisite (deckled edge and calligraphy engraved), but the staff and service were flawless. Proofs came in on time. Any questions I had were promptly answered. I never felt rushed when i was in the store and everyone there seemed to be genuinely excited about my wedding and the plan... Read more

Sun Oct 28 2007I cannot say enough wonderful things about the folks at Lion in the Sun, particularly Ashley and Melinda. I recently moved to Manhattan from Park Slope and throughout my wedding planning process, I regularly traveled back across the bridge just to work with these talented women. While the paperie stores in the city are overwhelmingly big and busy, LSPS is a pleasure to visit. I had hand-drawn images that I wanted to incorporate into my wedding invitiations and Ashley helped me create invitations, menus, table cards, and thank you cards with a cohesive look that was even better than I had imagined (sweet and personal, yet clean and well-done- AND affordable). Not only was she extremely gifted at listening to my ramblings and offering perfect suggestions, Ashley was also kind and easy to work with during such a hectic time! In addition, Ashley and Melinda went completely above and beyond the call of duty for me, TWICE. First, when the printing company (unaffiliated with LSPS) fel... Read more

Sat Sep 08 2007We absolutely loved working with the staff at Lion in the Sun for our wedding stationary. The staff, especially Ashley and Melinda, were phenomenal. They guided us through every step of the way in choosing a save the date and invitation that were absolutely perfect for us and totally reflected our personalities and what we were trying to express through our wedding. And we came to them with a somewhat unusual idea for our wedding program (we wanted to have a special drawing done by an uncle integrated on the front)....and they absolutely made our vision come true! Everyone is incredibly friendly and patient....and by the end of the process, we really felt like everyone in the store had become our friends. I absolutely can't say enough positive things about this wonderful gem of a store.

Fri May 11 2007I am overwhelmed at even how to rave --but here it goes. First of all, the finished product, our wedding invitations were beyond our expectations. We are getting so many response cards (and phone calls) telling us that they are "the most beautiful invitations" that they have seen. Melinda helped us customize invitations that captured and expressed our personalities --so that besides being elegant they are also quite unique! The quality of the invitations is exceptional too --and really the quality is so high and the prices were so reasonable. Melinda and her staff treated us wonderfully, they were kind, patient, responsive and resourceful. They put a lot of effort into our invitations and it felt like a labour of love coming from them. Melinda is soo creative too! The store itself is great to browse around in. We bought gorgeous guestbooks and scrapbooks, among other things. Fri Mar 02 2007My fiancee and I just picked up our wedding invitations from Lion in the Sun today, and we couldn't wait to sing the praises of this impressive little paper shop. Here's why you should go there for your important cards and invitations: 1. After just a couple of visits, everyone on the staff seemed to know our names. (Especially Melinda, Mallory and Ashley. See, we can remember names too!) 2. The selection was impressive, and included options we hadn't seen elsewhere. In addition to the usual brands, they had some choices by independent artists -- including one in the neighborhood, whose design we ended up going with. 3. Despite being quite busy on weekend afternoons, they took the time to work out every detail of our invitations, and were patient as we indecisively flipped from book to book. 4. They volunteered several suggestions to save us money -- ones we wouldn't have known to even inquire about. 5. As we finalized our invitations, they were always extremely responsive over email.... Thu Mar 01 2007It's like I've marked every major event with this store--engagement party, wedding announcements, invitations, thank-yous, birth announcements (two now!). Every time I've never been given less than tons of options and the attention to assist my sorting through it all, whoever is helping me. And that includes the first few times when I spent hours there going through every possibility. They are great at making suggestions--different paper textures, colors, fonts. And I've received so many compliments over the years--I send everyone I know to this store.

Wed Feb 28 2007We are very pleased with how our daughters Bat Mitzvah invitations turned out! This shop has a large selection and the person that we worked with was able help us throughout the entire process (looking at color options, discussing layouts, and adding necessary info) to find something that both myself, my husband AND (most importantly) something that our daughter liked. The overall presentation is beautiful, and we can't wait to hear the response from our guests. Thanks!

Fri Feb 23 2007We went here to create Save the Date cards for our wedding after reading rave reviews. While they are set up for standard types of invites, they do not have the resources to create an invite from scratch. At our initial consultation, we were told our cards would cost $3.50/piece. When we got our final quote, it was over $5.00. They also don't have the graphic design resources. When our original proof came back, and we didn't like the fonts, they asked us to look for our own fonts, because they "didn't have any." The prints were blurry, and there were alignment issues in the final print-out. Each revision took them 3-4 days, and when we expressed our concern about it they said "we just have so much business". We ended up doing a lot of work and paying them more than we expected. Bad customer service all around.

Melinda and all the staff at Lion in the Sun were INCREDIBLE and made our lives so easy. The invites were KILLER and people are still talking about them. Mon Oct 30 2006Lion in the Sun created invitations and place cards for my wedding. Melinda and her staff are creative and helpful, but most of all the customer service is extraordinary. They are willing to spend time with you to come up with the right details and take the time to follow through. I enjoyed working with them and would highly recommend them. This is exactly the type of small business I like to support. Thanks for an outstanding job.

I love the peace of mind I have knowing they are doing our programs, thank you cards etc.

I have worked with the staff at Lion in the Sun on Save the dates, Invitations, place cards and programs and have had consitently great service and beautiful work. Even when there was a slight problem with one of my orders, my pre-wedding nerves were totally calmed, they dealt with my problems professionally, quickly and with a sense of humour that really put my mind at rest. I can't recommend these guys enough. I'll definately be going back for baby announcements when the time comes!!
