I'm good with African-Americans celebrating their own holiday.

Great traditional holiday. Har, Har, Har!

It's lasted for 40 years now, and is thriving despite all the attempts to throw cold water on it as a "politically correct" holiday. When does it officially become a "tradition?" All traditions start somewhere. More importantly, why is it that any holiday that focuses on something other than a white person is deemed "politically correct?" The hysterical negative reactions to the holiday from self-righteous white people certainly undermines the stereotype of the "PC" person as too serious and lacking humor and the "politically incorrect" hero as the champion of having a good time without new puritanism. It's an opportunity to party guys. Lighten up!

UPDATE: Sammy, I think you may be confusing this farce with an actual holiday - Hanukkah. ORIGINAL 1-19-2002 POST: I dont have anything against this holiday but I do kind of wonder what people were thinking having it so close Christmas. If it was because it was traditionally celebrated at this time well, it wasnt celebrated at all until it surfaced a few years ago so apparently traditions can be changed. There are 12 months in the year to choose from and this one appears to be pretty booked up. Its like putting a high school band on after the Stones have played nobodys listening anymore.

While I agree with the principle that holidays such as Christmas has become too commercialized, I don't believe a separate holiday is necessary to replace it; how one chooses to celebrate a day is up to them. I also feel that it tries too hard to be symbolic and complex. Upon researching, the Seven Principles Nguzu Saba is: unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics (??), purpose, creativity, and faith. There are seven symbols (plus two more, but I guess nine isn't a special number, so they took those out and made them supplemental), one of which is corn, which is noted to not be indigenous to Africa. The name of the holiday is even edited to make it more symbolic: it is derived from kwanza, but there's an added a to make it seven letters. Created by a multi-culturist African Studies professor to give African-Americans something to identify with at Christmas time. Are the millions of African Americans celebrating Christmas missing out on something that I don't know about? All the black friends I have identify with with the holiday pretty much the way I do. This phony celebration is just another ploy by the multiculturalists to factionalize our society and exploit their perceived social disadvantages. Hey there Sam, I hope you were joking.

This is such a bullshit holiday. They just make it up one day on a whim, and then they make it the day after Christmas. It just makes me sick. You can't just make up a holiday, and then to have it the day after Christmas, that's where I draw the line. ANd it's meaningless, it's only been around like 20 years, whereas Christmas and Hannukah have been around thousands of years. It's just downright enraging.

Don't be fooled by it's multi-culturalist trappings. Kwanzaa was a holday created by the FBI - sounds incredible yet it's true, do some research. It's a pseudo holiday with no absolutely historical relevence whatsoever. Politically correct helliday for ethnic studies university extremists and their miseducated followers.

Right up there with Columbus Day (who DID NOT "discover" America and Groundhog Day.

It's too modernized, I think it's a lame excuse to prolong Christmas holidays.
