Sat Aug 18 2007We went to Hy's last night and I was truly disappointed after reading all the reviews of the restaurant. We ordered a house salad to share before our steaks. It was WAY overseasoned with the vinaigrette sauce and I could only take two bites before starting to gag. The server completely ignored us when we tried to get his attention. When he finally came back it was to bring us our steaks. I had their special, the "Oscar" which was their butterflied filet mignon with king crab legs on top of a bed of spinach and asparagus. At first look, the presentation was not bad but the bernaise-like sauce which was drizzled on top of everything was way too overwhelming. The steak was dry and underseasoned. The vegetables were the best part of the dish, which does not speak well for a steak house. My wife had the prime rib, which she thought was underportioned but seasoned well. On both of our dishes, we had the garlic mashed potato which was pretty good. We were both truly disappointe... Read more

Thu May 31 2007Hy's offers something for everyone, whether it's beef, chicken, lamb, or seafood. The steaks are always cooked to perfection. The service is wonderful. The table side service is lovely. My one disappointment is their failure to regulate the attire. The establishment is reminiscient of a colonial period. Heavy furniture and book lined walls. I love to dress up when I go, but unfornuately, too many people show up in jeans or shorts and aloha shirts. It tends to take some of the class out of it. My advice is to dress up and make a night out of it. It's pricey but worth every penny.

Fri Mar 30 2007I have been to Hy's for romantic dates and for family dinners. A span of over 25 years!!!!! The service and food superb. It has class that has faded from our society of fast food and ordinary restaurants. The Oysters are top notch and you can't go wrong with anything on the menu. There are lots of table side service, which is non heard of now a days. Dress up, grab your special loved one and celebrate each other!!!! You are worth it!

Thu Feb 08 2007Locals dine on steaks in a dim lit main room that resembles and old school library with dark mahogany paneling.

Tue Nov 29 2005The reason i like hy's is because they have a terrific menu - everything is delicious. There is a broad spectrum of prices on the wine menu, and they treat their customers with such class that you feel as though you've been transported back in time. Also, if you have the time to look around the place check out the woodwork - it is exquisite! P.S. - if you like iced tea get the lilikoi syrup - and for desert i'd suggest the banana's foster: they fire it up right at your table!

Mon May 30 2005I've been going to Hy's for 28 years and the one time my girlfriend and I went we had so much fun. The waiter knew her from 30 years ago at another establishment. The bus boy was just as nice as the waiter. It was like going back in a time capsule because the workers have been there a long time and we could reminise like old friends. Being local makes Hy's a nice place to dine.

Mon Feb 14 2005Hy's has excellent food, but beware that you will pay the price for it. I admit that I am spoiled by some amazing restaurant ambiance so maybe that's why i wasn't floored by Hy's surroundings, but it was still a very classy place. So though I did see some patrons in semi-casual attire, I wouldn't recommend it. This place is an excuse to dress up! The service was great and so was the food. I highly recommend the oyster sampler...delicious!

Sat Apr 26 2003Went here for a large drug company dinner. Very fancy ambience with a pretty good lounge singer. The food was excellent but taking a peek at the menu you're gonna pay for it. The classiness of the restaurant contrasts to its neighborhood, but don't let the outside fool you, inside is quite impressive with both the decor and the energy. Great Steak and the filet mignon was tantalizing.

Sat Mar 15 2003This is a great date place. Professional service, delicious food, ambiance, Hy's has it all. There are lots of tableside preps, the caesar salad was delicious and huge. The cherries jubilee dessert was spectacular. But the steaks are the stars. Opt for plain steak, and you'll get the full impact of top quality beef cooked over kiawe wood for an out of this world flavor. Lots of classic sides like french onion soup and escargot to accompany your meal, and the wine list is vast, albeit a little pricey.

Tue Feb 18 2003Fantastic pina colada- I had to have 2!! Caesar salad a little pricey, but very good. Steaks great and cooked perfectly. We came in off the beach and had a great dinner. Dark, small room atmosphere a plus.
