Sun Apr 08 2007Another decent job with a Clancy book. When I first started reading "Jack Ryan" books, Baldwin is who I pictured Ryan looking like. Harrison Ford was who I imagined Ryan "acting" like...good job of casting Ryan for the most part. Its very difficult to put a lot of technical information into a film. It takes about 200 pages of a Tom Clancy novel to get all the technical info across.

Thu Apr 06 2006Gets a little draggy at the end but still a great adventure Sean Connery film. Generally anything with Sam Neill,Scott Glenn and Sean Connery would be worth the watch. Baldwin appears to be sleep-walking.

Sat Dec 31 2005Great adaptation of the novel. Packed in thick, end-to-end. Best line in the movie: "Ryan, some things here don't react too well to bullets. Yeah, me. I don't react too well to bullets." For those into submarines, this one ranks right up there with Crimson Tide and Das Boot (if you use subtitles and not the dubbed version).

Tue Apr 20 2004One of the most boring movies I've ever seen. Fell asleep the first time I watched it and when I finally did rent it again I wished that I hadn't. What a waste of time. Long, boring, worthless movie.

Tue Feb 24 2004Released in 1990 and directed by John McTiernan, The Hunt For Red October was the first of the Jack Ryan novels by Tom Clancy to be made into a movie. For the uninitiated, the plot involves a super-silent Russian nuclear missile sub that is on its maiden voyage under the command of Capt. Marko Ramius (Sean Connery). Ramius, his First Officer Vasily Borodin (Sam Neill), and the rest of his officers plan to defect to the U.S. and hand over the submarine. Unaware of his intentions, the U.S. determines that Ramius has gone renegade, sending out the navy to sink her while the Russians (aware of the defection attempt) are out to get the sub as well. On the other hand, Jack Ryan (Alec Baldwin) believes that Ramius is defecting and must prove it before the fireworks begin. There is nothing really special about this Cold War themed film save for the performances of the aforementioned cast (especially Connery) as well as Scott Glenn who plays the opposing American submarine captain, James E... Tue Jan 27 2004Competent, if rather dull. Connery and Glenn are good, as are some lesser players. Baldwin, as usual is awful.

Thu Aug 07 2003About the only decent movie Alec Baldwin was in. He should have stopped after that.

Wed Oct 30 2002A true Cold War classic! Sean Connery shines, Alec is OK, even Sam Neill had a good role. Me being in the Navy, I had to be partial to this movie as it keeps you on the edge of your seat.

Mon Dec 03 2001Thoroughly routine submarine actioner. Nothing much to recommend, but not terrible either.

Fri Aug 24 2001Sean Connery's accent didn't come across that well. Alec Baldwin....too bad he couldn't have missed the sub and sunk to the bottom of the sea! Good movie though. The later TC novels were much better with Harrison Ford as the main character.

Fri Jan 12 2001Finally, a movie with thought. It's use of suspense and intrigue made this film one of my all time favorites. There is also the fact that I didn't have to sit through 2 hours of blood, sex and bad language.

Wed Jan 10 2001I really enjoyed this movie. It attracted me because my dad is a submariner. He said it was very realistic. It was very dramatic and there was never a dull moment.
