You really can't beat this one! One the one hand, cardio activity is one of the best ways to burn calories, ramp up your metabolism, and torch built up fat storage. One the other side, you have weight training which helps to create more muscle tissue which can help your body burn fat more efficiently. You pretty much can't go wrong with this method. You do however have to listen to your body and make sure you work in an appropriate amount of rest to allow your body to recover between workouts. As long as you can find the correct balance between the two to protect against injuries and keep your immune system from wearing down, the gym will always put you on a path to healthy weight loss when you make a commitment to going on a regular basis.

OK if you can afford it.I used to go to the gym religiously, and I found that I often got a better workout there than in the basement or garage with my weights because I was there to exercise & I got down to business with no distractions (telephone, doorbell, etc.: although today with cell phones I guess that could happen anywhere you're fool enough to bring one).Be careful, though: lots of gyms will try to rope you in with a contract. It is quite possible to get in great shape without belonging to a gym or fitness club.In fact, for the price of some memberships, you could buy yourself some good equipment that will last a lifetime. You might want to check out my list of home exercise equipment here on RIA.

Fine for those who really have the funds for it. There are ways to get good exercise without forking out all that dough.

I hate the interior of most gyms. I go with my cousin, and it's nice to know that someone you know is suffering just as much if not more. But once you get the endorphins going, you forget how much you hate the gym. And if you go habitually, you'll miss not going! It's sad that us modern folks have to pay to exercise...but it's better than not using any of our muscles all week long!

Be like numbah, people. I do enough pushups and my saber stuff is actually a pretty decent work out, yet I don't make myself crazy with some bizzare regimen that's hard to keep up... UPDATE: numbah has been doing some bike, pyramid sets of pull-ups, and some circuit training at a real gym of late... UPDATE: Ah crap. I'm bulking up without doing any power lifting! I'm up seven pounds since I got this stinkin' gym membership and none of it is gut related. I'll have to go to a power form for my lightsaber if this keeps up...

It took years of faithful procrastination and pouring money into something I had no intention of sticking with in the first place to convince me I am just not the gym type.   First of all, I don't care for the atmosphere, the machines never totally ceased to intimidate me and the staff - who are there to help you out (or so the rumor goes) become unable to even see you after the first day.  When I finally let go of my death grip on my last membership, I realized that I'd rather do some low impact exercises (including walking) free of charge at home and save my money for a trip to the spa as a reward for good behavior.

Combined with eating wisely, this is the best way to lose weight. However, when I had a gym membership I continually made excuses not to go: 1) I was tired 2) I had a bad day 3) I had PMS.  But my main excuse: going to the gym simply bored me.

This will definitely help you get in shape, however only four stars because when I work out more, I technically don't lose much weight, because I lose fat and gain muscle.

A good way to take off the pounds and also convert fat to muscle depending on if you lift weights or just do the stairclimber and treadmill. lifting weights in addition to the treadmill and adding different routines helps the most.

Probably the best thing to do, with the obvious health benefits that go with it.  Might not lose weight (may gain muscle mass), but it'll decrease fat weight, which should be the goal.
