Highland Park (12 year)

Fantastic single malt Scotch! So many flavors to behold. While I typically prefer the salty ocean brine of the Islays, Highland Park still has that awesome, smokey peatiness. Great for an newer single malt scotch drinker as it is almost like a buffet of different flavors.

For a novice of only a few months it is by far my favorite all-around. I particularly like the smoke at the end as opposed to a Laphraoig which hits you at the beginning and leaves you with a medicinal end. I say that drinking Laphraoig because, sadly, I polished off my bottle of HP rather quickly and after going through my Maccallan, Glenmorangie, and my Balvenie sampler pack, this is all I am left with. So enough with the name dropping because HP is the best for the price that I have had thus far.

I gave this five stars for newcomers to the single-malt world. A very well balanced flavor that can be enjoyed by anyone who likes smooth and tasty booze. I have had some of the more raved-about single-malts like Laphroaig with the huge flavors of peat and smoke and they are an aquired taste for sure. H.P. can be enjoyed by anyone who likes whisky or whiskey. Another thing I like about it is I can almost afford to drink it regularly. I paid about $35 (usd) for it. Even my wife enjoyed a sip or two.

A great all-around whisky -- plenty of body and complexity of flavours. Certainly the best whisky for the price. I think you'd have to pay double for something noticibly better.

If you like drinking iodine, this is the one for you! This one tastes like it is water poured straight through a medical swab. Very bitter taste, a touch of smoke at the end. I suspect the ratings previous to this are straight from the distillery! Not worth the money. Poor for a 12 year old. Spend a bit more and get Talisker if you are looking for someting peaty and smoley.

On the nose it is sweet and smokey at the same time. On the tongue it does the same, with a dash of peppery spice added. Nice texture, full body, and everything I like about Scotch.

Excellent, well rounded drink.

A great tasting single malt. Golden color, a bit of smoky flavor and heather, I'm reasonably sure it's finished in sherry casks. It's an "all-around" scotch that showcases a little of each of the important floral notes while not really being about any one of them. A great single malt for this reason if you normally enjoy blends.

I give this five stars because of the value. It's under $40 in the states, and I'd be hard-pressed to come up with anything better I've tasted in the price range.

The lower end is four stars, and I haven't tried the upper end. Orkney Islands is not my idea of Scotch Country. It is nice and smooth, however.

One of the most balanced and complex scotch single malts

HP 12Y is OK. To reach 4 stars I suggest the 18 years old HP, but to rally reach the top (5 stars), I would like to mention the 25 years old Highland Park. check out our tasting results at http://ubel.no-ip.info

Lacks the finess and range required for a five star rate. The price is in the name only.

The 12 is good, but the 18 is so much better. I've had the 25 and it's damn near perfect. Smoke, smoke and more smoke but lingering and so smooth. Never harsh. Just a killer dram. If I liked a good cigar, this would the dram to go with it.

12 year old single malt. In my opinion as a relative philistine of the whisky-drinking world (I'm happy to recommend a decent scotch over a single malt, and I'll always drink it with water or soda). By far and away the best whisky that you can buy for under 30. It's got a really accessible taste, so it will suit the mainstream palate more so than it's competitors. Don't buy Glenfiddich, don't by Laproaig, don't buy Glenmorangie. Buy Highland Park.

One of the very best whiskies of Scothland. Orkney Islands can be very proud of this very great product
