Tue Aug 12 2008(Crain?s) ? Evidence of c o c k a r o a c h e s found by city health inspectors at Hecky?s of Chicago forced the restaurant to close Wednesday afternoon. Chicago?s Department of Public Health made an announced visit to the barbecue restaurant at 1234 N. Halsted St. and discovered the infestation, the agency said in a statement. The inspection was triggered by a customer complaining of allegedly finding a c o c h a r o a c h in his sandwich. Hecky?s of Chicago was also cited for having cooked food resting at unsafe temperatures; for a unit that failed to keep hot food at temperatures required by city code, and for wastewater backup in a three-compartment sink used to wash, rinse and sterilize dishes. The restaurant will be fined a total of $2,250 and representatives are required to appear at an administrative hearing scheduled for Sept. 18.

Mon Mar 12 2007At Hecky's you are greeted with a loud and pleasant "hi! how are you today?" and overwhelmed by a huge IMAX like menu above your head. They've got anything you could think of when you think BBQ and they'll make it any way you'd like. I go in there all the time during lunch hour and it's super busy but they're quick to get you their quality food. At times it does take a while especially for the fried chicken, but everything always tastes fresh. One time I was in there craving a grilled cheese sandwich, which wasn't on their menu, but they did not hesitate at all and said "not a problem!". Each time Im in there they give my husband and I lots of hospitality and they remember you if you've been there more than once. Delicious!

Fri Nov 10 2006If this is what they call good barbeque, then they should close up shop. I drove up here from the southside past a lot of good places to taste what was supposed to be good. Nothing was good. Hot links were terrible and the tips tasted like they were boiled then baked. The sauce has nothing to it. This is not what I expected after seeing Hecky's make the list of the best. It's more like the 10 worst. We have a lot better in Chicago.

Fri Jul 21 2006We ordered delivery from here and it was awful. I really think the worst ribs I have ever had, the meat was chewy with odd pieces, and the sauce was marginal. My husband tried the beef ribs that were served fred flinstone style (HUGE HORSE RIBS OR SOMETHING), which we both thought was weird. The cole slaw was bland, we also tried the baked beans - gross, and onion rings, that tasted like they had been sitting around all day. I am really surprised this place was acknowledged on the 'Best of' list, it makes me wonder who was doing the rating. Oh - we also tried to do the order online function from their website, an hour later when our order had not arrived, we called to check on it - they had never received it, and we are still waiting credit for our paypal payment. Save your money and go elsewhere, I can't believe that this place has been in business for so long.

Mon May 29 2006In Short Like its sister restaurant in Evanston, it's all about the 'cue at this carryout joint. Some diners go medieval with the slathered turkey drumstick; those who prefer a leaner cut opt for the fall-off-the-bone baby backs or perfectly juicy barbecued chicken. Other menu favorites include fried shrimp served with a side of barbecue sauce, plus corn bread, seasoned fries, crunchy slaw, and sweet potato pie and tapioca-like peach cobbler for dessert.

Fri Oct 28 2005Hecky's was started in Evanston. The owner, a cool dude, was smart and had a Northwestern business major write his business plan. Hecky's is uniquely African American BBQ. What I mean is the sauce is simular to the sauce in BBQ beans. Not my favorite. The quality is so so. That being said people love it. I'm not big on the beans, hot link or white bread.
