Great selection of local specialties...gumbo jambalaya and crawfish etouffee. Don't miss the fresh fruit daiquiri, with flavors like cantaloupe, lime, and honeydew.  yum!  Also the French bread and pecan salad dressing were above and beyond the norm.

Okay, so I am born and raised in New Orleans. Needless to say, I KNOW good New Orleans food, especially gumbo. This place is absolutely AWFUL and the service is PATHETIC. I ate there yesterday evening with some co-workers. I really was expecting so much better for such a popular restaurant in the French Quarter. Unfortunately, we made a big mistake when choosing to eat at the Gumbo Shop. There's a board near the front entrance with the daily specials. After we took a look at the daily specials, one of my co-workers had her mouth set on the blue margarita. So, we were seated quickly and our server came for our drink order. Of course, my co-worker quickly ordered one of those blue mararita specials that was prominently displayed on the "specials of the day" board. The server gave her the funniest "are you nuts?" look. Husband and I drove 200 miles for my birthday weekend in N.O. I picked Gumbo Shop for my birthday dinner. I didn't receive my entree so I told my waiter and nothing was done. I went to management twice and finally they agreed to bring out my entree but only after going back in forth for 30 mins. I said no thanks and asked to have it removed from our bill along with the desserts that we ordered. I wasn't in the mood since the manager, Oliver, came over to the table in front of the dining room and blamed THEIR mistake on the fact that we were "drunk" . We each had a beer with dinner and a bourbon and coke an hour before, hmmm... He retotaled our beer and charged us ala carte on everything which jacked our bill up worse. We refused to pay the complete bill since the food we had was hardly touched since we were left to wait for my entree. Went the 2nd of Aug and well what can I say a local told us to go there for a lite meal before we go and eat later... Umm the gumbo (seafood was awful) it had little bitty shrimp 3 crab claws that didnt have any meat, the ett was sweet... My B-F had the chicken gumbo which was good.. The bread pudding was too dam sweet!! Of course later I got sick!!! And didnt feel good the rest of the night!! yuck

We decided to try this restaurant on our recent trip to New Orleans. I am vegetarian while my husband is definitely non-vegetarian. After having a couple of drinks and appetizers on Bourbon Street we decided to try this restaurant. Even though there was a wait outside, we were seated pretty quickly (since it was just the two of us). The service was alright and the food was ok too. Their vegetarian special was rice and beans, nothing to write home about (not that I was expecting much, I was just glad to get something vegetarian). On the other hand my husband was disappointed with the chicken and andouille gumbo, which they claim to be the best in town.

Avoid if you want to save your money and your appetite!!! I taught we ordered gumbo soup. Well the soup was absolutely awful. If you add the terrible service the place become one of a kind NOT to go there again restaurant. Non of us found any sea food in the soup more then 1.2%. Service was really BAD. And the tip was already included. Plus if you like to be seeing from outside while you are in the restroom this would be your place. Well I would not recommend it at all. There are much nicer restaurants out there.

My fiance and I just ate here less than an hour ago. We were promptly seated in a very crowded and cramped dining room, the bread thrown on table right in front of her in a cloth napkin. Our dinner was brought out to us very quickly. I had the seafood gumbo, which was not terrible after adding some of the pepper blend that was on the table. She ordered the combination plate and substituted the crawfish etoufee for the red beans and rice. The shrimp creole was not too bad after adding hot sauce, other than the shrimp being terribly overcooked. and then the crawfish etoufee. it was nothing but mush. the crawfish was EXTREMELY overcooked. I cannot say this enough, MUSHY. like gerbber 1st foods mushy. the jambalaya was dry and bland. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone, you would have better luck at the McDonalds on canal street, it was that bad.

I just got back from visiting New Orleans--a city known for its food--and I can honestly say that the entire experience I had at the Gumbo Shope was horrible, from the service to the food itself. The Gumbo Shop definitely caters to tourists, but as a tourist myself I thought I would try it. The prices may be reasonable compared to other restaurants, but the food you receive for it is horrible. I got the Combination platter, which included portions of the jambalaya, the crawfish etoffee, and the gumbo with shrimp. The entire plate looked liked it came out of a can. The jambalaya was nothing more than a pile of rice, and it was terribly dry. The etoffee and the gumbo both looked like some kind of mush that came out of a can that you would expect to find in some school or military cafeteria. Boyfriend and I went here early in the week for lunch. There was a brief wait as the hostess sat another couple, but that was it. We were seated outside, which was perfect as the weather was not too hot, not too cold. The table was rather close to our neighbors (the two tables could also be used for a group of four) but it turned out fine as they were nice people! The food was excellent. Boyfriend ordered chicken andouille gumbo, which he really liked. I ordered red beans and rice with sausage, which was awesome. We were served a nice crusty loaf of bread before the meal, and had we asked could have gotten another for the meal. The waitstaff was friendly and efficient, and the prices were great. At other times I have heard this place gets really crowded, but this is the case with really good places!

I have to rave about the crawfish etouffe my wife and I enjoyed this past Tuesday. It was very rich in seasoning and had to have more than a pound of crawfish in it. It was the best I have ever tasted. The night we ate there was a wait problem. One of the waiters went home sick and they were very crowded. Our waiter was taking care of 8 tables and doing a bang up job. Got our order out in great shape and still stopped by peiodically to check on us. I was so impressed that we went back and had lunch the next day. The food was excellent then as well. I had the blackened catfish po boy and it was sweet and very flavorful. I would reccommend the Gumbo Shop any time and am looking foreward to going back in October.

In Short Visitors and locals alike line up in the restaurant's narrow, alley-like entryway as they wait to be seated. Like many of the older buildings in the French Quarter, the bustling restaurant's brick entrance area opens up into a leafy courtyard accented with bright red and orange bougainvillea. Favorites include hot bread and gumbo, but shrimp sandwiches (sauteed, not fried), jambalaya, crawfish etoufee and shrimp Creole are also available.

Everyone deserves a chance, right? No. Not this place. Service was prompt, in that we were quickly ushered into the large, cramped, main dining room. Our waitress was apathetic at best, and while we were given an entire loaf of French bread we were not given plates, so the bread was eaten on the napkin it came in. Perhaps the normal chef was on vacation? And Chef Boyardee was temping? The Shrimp Creole certainly was his tomato sauce with a smattering of shrimp. Where to begin on to the Crawfish Etoufee... How does grey mass of fishy goo sound? A generous helping of freezer burned crawfish tails did not save this dish. Fortunately they provide a shaker of Gumbo Shop Seasoning (TM), several teaspoons of which made these dishes almost edible. To all who raved about this place: have you the brain worms!?!

Just down the street from Jackson Square this little shop is the best around. The prices are great and so is the Gumbo which I have to say ...

The food is traditional New Orleans. I really enjoyed the gumbo with hot french bread. The service was terrible. The waiter rarely came to our table to see if we wanted a refill on our soda nor did he offer dessert (which we would have ordered if he asked). He put the bill on our table and left. We paid and left as well.

We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves at this restaurant. The line was almost out the door when we arrived, but moved quickly. The food was out of this world and we wish we would have went here a second time instead of some of the other restaurants we visited. The $$ was definitely well worth it. A thorougly enjoyed experience. We got to sit by the window which was nice, as it was pretty cramped in there, but it added to the ambiance. Definitely try this place out.

My husband and I went to the Gumbo Shop for dinner after seeing it mentioned on Food Network. There was a long line out the door, which I guess is a good sign, but we got in within 10-15 minutes. The menu was large and varied but we stuck with the gumbo and were not disappointed. Our waitress was attentive and friendly. For dessert, we had the pecan pie a la mode and this ice cream sundae with praline pecans which were absolutely phenomenal! Prices were also good. We would definitely go back.

I was born and raised in LA and I know good cajun food - the gumbo shop is consistantly good - I had the gumbo and the blackened fish appetizer was really good - I would go back there when in N. O .

I still love their gumbo the best. Also, it is a great place to give your wallet a rest. The food is tastey, service is attentive and the place is always packed. You can have dinner for two for under $40 here. It is also a good place for lunch. A little cramped quarters and noisey but still pleasant.

In the past 15 years I have traveled to New Orleans for business or pleasure at least 1-2x per year. Some years I have visited more often to see friends. I schedule my trip to allow time to drop my things from the airport and go immediately to the Gumbo Shop. The culinary delights are fabulous, particularly with the special sauce. The menu is a great read and a better experience. I have eaten there alone and with a party of 10 and the service has been equally impecable. The Gumbo Shop is the tast of New Orleans to me!

The gumbo at the Gumbo shop was delicious. Priced at a most reasonable $6.75, the portion size was generous, and the flavor quite nice. I would certainly recommend others going there for dinner. The only thing I would have like to see was more meat in the gumbo.

had lived in n.o. 24 years and finally visited the gumbo shop on a trip back to n.o. as a tourist with friends visiting for the first time....GREAT value especially for the french quarters. Good food...I have actually had better gumbo at jack dempsey's but overall a good experience....line went really quick (visited on a saturday around 1 ish)..would visit again especially with friends visiting the city

The Gumbo Shop is great! I have been ther twice and plan on going there every time I go to New Orleans. The spinach-artichoke dip (appetizer) is the best that I have had anywhere and the crawfish etoufee as an entree is to die for. The other great thing about The Gumbo Shop are their fabulous daiquiris. They are made from fresh fruit and have a nice kick to them. The Gumbo Shop is a must do if you are in New Orleans- I would recommend taking friends and family there. If there is a line, you can grab a drink while you wait in line. Its wonderful!

We tried the Gumbo Shop after most other restaurants were closed down by Tropical Storm Bill. The prices are reasonable - esp. for the French Quarter, which can get pricey - and the food was good. I had the combination platter, which let you try a little bit of everything. Excellent red beans & rice and jambalaya. My husband had a shrimp po boy & really enjoyed it. The atmosphere is nice, although cramped, but we recommend it!

We live in Baton Rouge so visit New Orleans often...I took out of town guests to this resturant after reading the reviews (I had not been in years). The gumbo was HORRIBLE. Now true, living in LA I have had some of the best..but this was one of the worst! The rest of the food was okay. Would NOT go back.

We went on a Sat. night and it was crowded but seemed to move at a good rate, you are packed in at this place!! Thats OK though because its really good food!! Go earlier that 7:00. Enjoy!!

We usually hit the Gumbo Shop at least once whenever we visit town. Good sampling of Cajun dishes at affordable prices. Can get crowded.

Though this was not one of the restaurants that was recommended to us before our visit, we were very pleased with our meal! The 4-course combination option is an incredible bargain at $18.95! If you're looking for an inexpensive, out-of-the way restaurant with excellent food, the Gumbo Shop is right up your alley!

If you can stop by this restaurant. The food is really good and the service isn't that bad!

I had a wonderful and inexpensive Duck L'Orange here a few years ago, and wanted to return as soon as possible. But you can't go back can you? Our recent experience involved plates of indistinguishable runny mush and rice. One was puported to be 'gumbo', another 'etoufee', another 'shrimp creole' etc with the taste being as unique as the appearance of each dish.

Downtown in Jackson Square. A white table cloth establishment but economically priced. Great for all the Nawlins favorites: Gumbo, crawfish etoufee, jambalaya and my favorite, the Trout Florentine.
