I grew to love grits with breakfast when I lived in Florida for a year (they're a Southern dish, not Midwestern, where I grew up). You grits-haters should check out CastleBee's review, below, who got it exactly right--they have to be thick, not runny, with plenty of butter, salt, and pepper. Very good and warming in the tummy. Unfortunately, not to be found here in the San Francisco Bay area.

As a person who likes bland food on occasion, I still don't get the appeal of grits.  It's as if it actually has no flavor.  Actually, it's more like a "black hole" of flavor, sucking the taste out of everything around it.

I've only had these a few times and I rather enjoyed them. Not exactly your heart-smart food though.

Only had grits once, a few years ago when a friend invited me over to the Michigan/Ohio State rivalry game for an "authentic midwestern breakfast" consisting of eggs, bacon, grits, and a big container full of bloody mary. First time I had been drunk in the morning since college. I remember the grits fondly, but to be honest after two of those bloody maries I'd probably remember a sexual encounter with Barbara Bush fondly.

I've only had hominy grits, and can't say I care much for them. I've tried putting it with other things, and it only makes the other things worse rather than making them better.

I've honestly never eaten a grit- you'll have to forgive me I'm from the north where hash brown and home fries are your standard side with breakfast. However the idea of cooked cornmeal doesn't seem appealing not to mention I hate cream o wheat and oatmeal, so I can't see how these would appeal to me.

I'm a Yankee in the New England sense of the word, and proud of it. I freely admit to loving grits, and will defend my right to love and devour them from all foes, foreign and domestic. :o)

I found out what a grit was when I watched My Cousin Vinny. I don't eat the stuff. What for? It's for Southerners only.

I don't eat them very often but when I do I find them not only tasty but filling. Plus, they can go with just about any meal. Maybe not the best thing to eat if your looking to lose weight but what isn't?

I learned to like grits years ago. I eat grits every chance I get. Try stirring in a couple of cooked eggs in with them in a bowl. Delicious!

Sorry I have to give a score of 1 as I have no idea what grits are but if they are anything like their name then they are gritty and possibly quite horrid! Best to err on the side of caution and then the only way to go is up.

Down in the south this is very popular when ever i go down there to vist my uncle we always go to this small dinner which has grits. Now I only tried them once, and they arent a food that i would eat all the time its what i call a once in a great while food.

They're runny and disgusting to look at. I think I must have been a Yankee in a previous life. I hate grits and I can't stand turnip greens either. Yuck!UPDATE: Ok, I let my family talk me into trying shrimp grits and they were really not that bad. So I'm raising my rating from a 1 to a 2.

Grits have always been one of my favorite breakfast foods and always will be - and I am a Yankee. I truly feel bad for you scarletfeather if you've only had runny thin grits served to you. Those are the very sub-standard variety to be sure. Grits are at their finest served medium thick with butter, salt and pepper (sugar is a sacrilege!!!) They are excellent with any style egg - especially poached or fried over easy - try to hold on to that yolk it really works well mixed in. I also love to crumble a couple of slices of bacon in them. If you know the kind to buy (definately NOT anything with the words QUICK or INSTANT on the box) and how to cook and serve them, there is nothing more tasty than the humble bowl of grits. And, by all means, do NOT let the name prevent you from at least giving them a try. You will never know what you're missing!

One of the things I miss about living in the south (though I make them sometimes here, a thousand miles west of the grits line). I like 'em best, strangely enough, with cheese.

Sometimes I will eat grits if someone else is making it...but I personally rarely ever make it because there is just so much better to make for breakfast. I also use instant grits as a fire ant killer in my yard. It doesn't work well, but it does last about a week...
