Sat Nov 13 2010Gollum is a very devious character but I rate him a 3 because the Ring changed him. I do pity Gollum. He was not always this way. Yes, it was very bad to kill Deagol over the Ring. But then he nearly redeems himself by leading Frodo and Sam to the Black Gate and through the secret passage. In the end Gollum did lead Frodo into Shelob's Lair and did try to get rid of Sam. That, I think, is the point where Gollum finally turns pure evil and will do anything to get the Ring. He even followed Frodo and Sam to Mt. Doom. But, Gollum ended up in the fires of Mt. Doom with the Ring in his hand. He fell because he was celebrating about getting back the Ring but he lost his balance and died in the fires of Mt. Doom. That was the end of Gollum, The Ring, and the Dark Lord Sauron.

Wed Jul 16 2008The true tragic hero of the book and the the film. Tolkien was always careful not to make evil simple, and in Gollum he reaches his peak. Gollum, the fallen hobbit, is key to the story, and his trials of conscience and struggle is one of the most fascinating elements of the book and the film.

Mon Dec 12 2005IMO the greatest and most complicated character that Tolkien ever created. A tortured, haunted, humorous, simultaneously a sympathetic, tragic, and abhorrent figure. Solid proof that Tolkien was capable of creating complex, multi-dimensional characters, despite the claims of those reviewers overly enamored of realism/ naturalism who criticize Tolkien for lack of character development. Perhaps the greatest and saddest moment in the books is when Gollum almost repents of his plan to lure Frodo and Sam into Shelob's Lair. It's not in the movie, though IMO it should have been.

Fri Apr 15 2005For me, Gollum was the most entertaining of the entire movie. My precioussssssss. He he, I love it. He's the most quotable. While other characters have lines like, The sun rises red. Blood has been spilt, he says my precioussssss in a really cool voice. Plus he has a really cool scene with the whole spilt personality thing. Yea, Gollum pretty much rocks.

Mon May 24 2004Gollum was my favourite LOTR character, he was definitely the one I sympathised with the most. His obsession and greed with the ring completely destroyed his soul, but at the same time I couldn't help but laugh at the conversations he had with smeagol, his shadow-self.

Sat May 08 2004I have to agreet they made him too nice in the two towers, in the book he was meaner. But in the Return of the King he was too sneaky, very strange charicter change, even to two creatures in one.

Wed Mar 10 2004I hate this guy. Just thinking about him pisses me off. Every time he says the precious I want to throw a rock at him.

Tue Mar 09 2004almost a 4.5. Smeagol was turned crazy when he got the ring whicj changed him into the monster that he is. You kind of feel bad for him in The Two Towers, But in The Return Of The King, you will want him killed. He calls the one ring his Precious because of it's powers. Still a likeable character

Thu Jan 01 2004Gollum is too funny. With his high pitched voice, weird eyes, split personalities, and conniving ways, He's just one classic character!

Tue Dec 30 2003All I can say is, Gollum rocks! In the movies, my favorite scenes with him are when he has conversations with Smeagal. Great line from TTT: Smeagal to Gollum: Not listening!. Also, every time Gollum calls someone my precious, and just looks at the camera and screams ahhhhh!, I had to laugh. It was awesome!

Tue Dec 30 2003Certainly adds flavour to the movies. His little alter ego is a case though, I must admit. Caniving. But Goolum adds a lot to the movies. A cool character.

Sat Dec 20 2003One scary and complex and tragic villian. As others have pointed out Smeagol is Tokien's most fascinating character, the split personality and the struggle between good and evil is fascinating. In the movies, Andy Serkis is superb with the perfect creepy voice and he effectively portrays the tragic hobbit.

Fri Dec 12 2003Brilliant. This character is brilliant. Andy Serkis did a phenomenal job voicing and acting, even though it was computer generated. You can see him in the character of Smeagol/Gollum. Gollum is supposed to be hideous-looking. That is what the Ring did to him. He is ancient. To paraphrase Yoda in The Empire Strikes Back, after 580 years, look so good, you will not! I would be very interested in seeing the YOUNG Smeagol. It broke my heart when he felt betrayed by Frodo, when it was the actions of others who caused the attack on him. It broke HIS heart too and that was well portrayed on screen. For a CG character, he has become a real BEING in my mind. That is talent!

Thu Nov 13 2003I believe people love Gollum because he is so intriguing. At one point he can be touching and the next he's cruel. Alternately making you laugh and then making you hate him, he is the most unique character in LOTR.

Fri Sep 12 2003Gollum is the best LOTR character. Especially in the movies. The Two Towers really brought him to life, kudos to Andy Serkis for that. Gollum seems so real with the CGI, and he is JUST PLAIN OLD AWESOME. His split personality makes him better! GO GOLLUM!

Fri Jun 27 2003We likeses him, my precioussss. Gollum is one of the best anti-heroes in literature. His inner conflict between "slinker" and "stinker", as Sam calls them, is very interesting. He's the most psycologically disturbed hobbit there ever was, and that makes him awsome!

Tue Jun 17 2003I'm a Slave for Gollum! I have the little action figure of him, he's so cool, and even if he's scary looking thats cool, i like that, i worsip him. He's one of the best characterers in LOTR and is SOO funny. A real comedian. By the way, he also has schizophrenia.

Fri Jun 06 2003I love the hideous that is Gollum, I can't wait until the next film when I get to see him again because he is actually really lovely.

Thu May 29 2003Smeagol is actually a fascinating character; he really gets to you psychologically. excellent metaphor for human mental/emotional dichtotomy, and not just because he had a split personality. he was a very complex character.

Mon Feb 10 2003I remember watching Ralph Bakshi's cartoon version of LOTR years ago when I was a kid and Gollum seriously creeped me out. He was by far the most memorable character in the story, in fact in any fantasy I've read before or since. Gollum is evil, corrupted, a victim of his own tortured psyche, but he is also extremely pitiful. I never thought anyone could follow up the cartoon Gollum but hey, Peter Jackson did! I only wish he had more screen time. The relationship between Frodo, Gollum and Sam was fascinating but not meaty enough.

Tue Jan 07 2003I love Gollum. He is so nice when he doesn't have his other personality come out. I really enjoyed him being a part of Frodo and Sam's group.

Tue Dec 31 2002I was really scared of him at first, but then he showed his split personality and I felt bad for him. I felt the same way when I read the book and they did a good job not changing a lot. They did an amazing job making him look real!

Thu Dec 26 2002Okay, I admit it: Gollum was awesome! At first, I was revolted by the way he looked (although the way they did it with computer graphics was fantastic) because he was really scary. But as time went on, I kind of found Gollum endearing. I like how they made him seem like he had two sides, two very different and rivaling personalities. I was still scared of his bad side, but when he was in his good side, he was adorable in a really grotesque way. It's kind of like Yoda from Star Wars; he's cute, but in the unconventional way.

Tue Mar 26 2002Gollum is cool. I wish he would have...gasp!...killed Bilbo and then there would have been a King Gollum. That's if he didn't get destroyed by his many captors who easily capture him at will. I don't think poor Gollum will ever be King.

Wed Feb 20 2002Wow- Gollum just might be my favorite LOTR character (in close contention with Treebeard). He has an amazing way of being everywhere at once. Gollum is spoken about all throughout the story and then it turns out that he's following Frodo. He's clever, he's cool- okay, he's a little volatile but his dialogue is great, murmuring about "nice hands" and "nice hobbitses". I listened to a sound clip from "The Two Towers" of Andy Serkis doing the voice and it sure is creepy. I was interested to know that Gollum/Smeagol will be an entirely computer-generated character in the second movie.

Wed Feb 20 2002By far the most interesting character in the saga. With his split personalities and his affinity towards sneaking up on things and throttling them, Gollum is one scary dude. I am looking forward to seeing Gollum's two identities debate with each other in the movie...
