It is a good movie about the raising of a regiment of Black soldiers for the Union Army in the American Civil War, and that regiment's assault on a strong Confederate fort during the prolonged siege of Charleston, South Dakota. As far as the military aspects of the film are concerned, the director and writers get it mostly right. What I objected about the film was that the writers made it appear that the 54th Massachusetts, the regiment in question, was raised from the servile population, that is freed slaves. In fact the 54th was an elite unit raised from the cream of Black society in the northern states on the East Coast. Two of Frederick Douglass' sons were among the first to volunteer.I think this movie disparages the regiment's memory in that respect.

This is one of those movies that I'll stop and watch when I find it on. It's not 100% accurate, as others have noted, but it's still a good movie. Amazingly, for me, it's one of the few films with Matthew Broderick that I don't see the mannerisims or the doe eyed look from his Ferris Bueller character showing up.

Absolutely one of the best movies of all time. Too bad the Blu-ray version is so new it won't work on my Samsung BD-1600 yet. :( Samsung needs to hurry up with the firmware upgrades.

In 1989, "GLORY" would become an important movie that introduced many Americans unfamiliar to Civil War history but most of all, to show viewers the impact African Americans had in the role of fighting for the Union. The film would focus on Col. Robert Gould Shaw, the letters he sent to his family and him leading a group of African American men who volunteered to fight against the Confederate Army. This group is known as the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. The film is also adapted from Lincoln Kirstein's book "Lay this Laurel" and Peter Burchard's book "One Gallant Rush". "GLORY" was directed by Edward Zwick ("DEFIANCE", "Blood Diamond", "The Last Samurai" and "The Siege"), screenplay by Kevin Jarre ("The Mummy"and "Rambo: First Blood Part II"), music by James Horner "Enemy at the Gates", "A Beautiful Mind" and "Troy") and cinematography by Freddie Francis ("Dune", "Clara's Heart" and "Cape Fear"). The film would star major talents Matthew Broderick ("WarGames", "Ferr... Read more

I bought this for two reasons: #1 so that I would have one of the many magnificent performances of one of the most amazing black actors of all time, Denzel Washington. #2 to rememeber the continuous sacrifices African Americans made and continue to make for America despite the oppression that continues to confront us. Wonderful teaching tool for my son if the right message is given.

A powerful portrayal of Robert Gould Shaw's (my great x ? uncle's) leadership of the Union's first African American regiment in the Civil War. It also happens to be the movie that really put Denzel Washington on the map. His performance alone makes the movie worth seeing.

By now, Glory has become a film that's part of American curriculum.  It's shown in high schools, it's seen as the launch of Denzel Washington into the stratosphere of great contemporary film performers, it's seen as a breakthrough historical film.  It's a solid, solid, yet imperfect work.  It's a little long-winded at times - but that's a small fault.  A terrific production.

It is sad that it has taken so many years for stories like this to hit the public conciousness. Well made film with a fine cast, good visuals, and well told story.

This is a pretty good Civil War movie. If you have never seen this movie before, watch it all the way through, you will be shocked by what happens at the end. Really, you will not see it coming.

A very good movie, whether it is "historically accurate" or not.The fact is that Afro-Americans DID fight in the Civil War,and that has not been acknowledged or treated by any other movies I know of.Broderick,Washington and the entire cast all turn in notable performances.

We watched it in social studies class... there was a bit of an issue getting us allowed to watch it because of language or whatever but we ended up seeing it. I liked it a lot. Good movie, good plot. I think it was realistic, but they didn't go overboard on the blood and gore trying to get more viewers, or however they do that...

Ok, In social Studies we watched this movie [edited christian version] i found it kind of boring and over exaggerated. I was dissapointed that it was based on union soldiers [i was raised confederate] and i thought matthew brodrick's mustchache just didn't suit him.

This has got to be one of the best war movies of all time. It beats out "The Patriot" by a long shot. This film had all the goods nad presented a realistic re-enactment of the rise and fall of the 54th Massachusetts Regiment led by Col. Robert Gould Shaw. As a lover of history, I knew that I had to see this movie when I first heard about it, and I was not disappointed. The characters were all perfectly developed, and the buildup to the climax was phenominal. Not to mention the wonderful acting by the all-star cast which included Matthew Broderick, Denzel Washington, Morgan Freeman, Cary Elwes, Jay O'Sanders and others. I enjoyed seeing each of the characters evlve in their own way: espescially that of Denzel Washington, whose character was so cynical, hateful and spiteful at the beginning but in the end we learned his true feelings of respect for the brave men fighting beside him. "Glory" is a moving, inspirational film which shows that a true patriot is one who defends his country eve... Read more

The best and most captivating civil war film to date. Denzel Washington should have recieved an oscar for his performance. One of the few films anymore which is inspiring and very heroic.

I loved this movie. It is one of the best ever. With powerful performances by Denzel Washington, Morgan Freeman and Matthew Broderick, it was definitely deserving of the accolades it received. It would have been nice to more info on the black soldiers perspective of this war and their personal situation.

Although I watched Glory when I was younger, I have to say that it was one of the most memorable movies of my time. It's drama scenes were touching and the theme of the movie was good.

Civil War movies ar historical and tragic. This is one of the best. It covers the Mass. black regiment on the Union side. Very educational. It being a film it can give people a chance to see history, rather than read about it. Great cast including Carey Elwes, Morgan Freeman, and Denzel Washington.

Excellent film! It was very touching. A chance for many African-American male actors to shine. It was a historically based film that was semi-accurate. No unnecessary battles/bloody scenes. At the time of release, it showed a part of history few knew about. Great musical score, haunting melodies.

This was one of my favorite movies. I'm not all that into war, but this movie really helped me out a lot. It showed me that afro-americans really made a difference in the world, even though it took us a long time. I would love to have been back then, only to fight and prove a point to myself and others.

Matthew Broderick and Morgan Freeman, as well as Denzel Washington are great. The Civil War is shown in all it's unglamorous horror. Way better than "The Patriot" because it deals with history, has a moral and is realistic.

One of my favorite movies. Glory is the story of Robert Gould Shaw - the white commander of one of the first battallions of black soldiers in the Civil War. The book which the movie was based upon was written by piecing together letters which Shaw sent back to his New England family - and which are still on display in a Boston museum. The acting is superb - Morgan Freeman, Denzel Washington, Matthew Broderick, the story is compelling (and true), and the drama is intense. If you have not seen this movie, brace yourself - it is sad and powerful and deep and historical.

One of the best movies that I have ever seen. Matthew Broderick did a terrific job breaking from the ferris Bueller character and denzel Washington gave one of his greatest performances. One of those movies that you pull off the shelf and rent from the video store even though you have already seen it a couple of times.

Easily one of my favorite movies of all time, Glory paints a wonderful portrait of the profound sacrifices Americans of all backgrounds made for fundamental liberties during the Civil War.
