Mon Jun 07 2010Those little runts ain't GI JOE. I had the real ones in the late 60s/early 70s.They'd be worth some bucks today, but they saw heavy combat...

Mon Sep 21 2009"Never again!" doesn't even work for me, because I never owned a G.I. Joe. If I had, he wouldn't have lasted very long, as many of my plastic toys can attest to. I had a fairly large army of plastic soldiers and they all perished, or surrendered to slavery status, at the hands of my secret weapon: I would remove the spring-loaded insert from my Daisy BB rifle and load the barrel with glass marbles. There was no defense against this. Ask my sisters.

Mon Sep 21 2009From the look of the picture above, it appears that he got a make-over of some sort in the 80's and probably a Saturday afternoon cartoon tie-in to help sell more toys. But I think Joe had been around a long time by the dawn of the 1980's. I had one in the 60's who must have served in 'Nam. I think I played more with my cowboy action figure, Johnny West (basically GI Joe's head stuck on a body that was clad in buck skin). The coolest toy for kids my age however was a space themed rubber guy, the type with the internal wire frame so that he could be moved around, called Major Matt Mason. When I was a kid, it was all about going to the moon.

Wed Jun 10 2009Once again - there is apparently nothing new under the sun OR in your 80's childhood toybox...GI Joes have been around since 1963 - almost 20 years prior to this decade. Even so, my Barbie preferred Ken's better looking friend Alan (who I renamed depending on the movie star I had a crush on at the moment). GI Joes were boring, mean, had ugly permanent expressions, mundane clothes and bad hair cuts.

Tue Jun 09 200980's? I remember "playing" (or "pretending") with these "macho" dolls at some point in the late 60's. They all had the same battle-inflicted scar on the cheek, the same stoic expression, and the same lack of genitals (not that my friends and I were paying an inordinate amount of attention to the toy's genitals; maybe we would have been had there been a "GI Jane" doll). Instead of on the fields of battle, they met their valiant ends in the dunes of the backyard sandbox. I think as the decades passed, the doll got smaller, more compact in terms of size. Does the 1980's version still have that same scar on the cheek, I wonder?
