German

It's a language that sounds nice. It sounds almost as rough as russian, but it lacks the poetic attribute to it. It's easy to learn it if you know/speak English fluently. And it is very useful. BTW, did you know that it only took two more votes for German to become the official language of the US?!

For those linguistic nitwits here who equate it with Nazism, you might be interested to know that this the the language most closely related to English, and is in fact one of the main roots of the language used on this site. And for those who want to perpetuate the myth that German came within a single vote of becoming the official language of the United States, let me suggest you do a few minutes of research to dispel your ignorance. Firstly, the U.S. has never had an "official" language, nor has a vote ever been taken on it. There are many individual states that have English as an official language, and many that do not, but the country as a whole has no official language. Not a very attractive language. Difficult to express yourself in.

Like many others, I had my misconceptions about German. I quickly thought of it as an ugly, once evil language due to Germany's history in WWII. However, after listening to the language and doing research about it, I've come to realize I've been hasty in my thoughts about German.It may sound different, but it is far from ugly. With the language, one can discover great things in the original language. Freud, Beethoven and even Einstein are possibilities. Quite simply, one must look at the good things about German and its history like any language. I'm considering learning it and mastering it, even though I once thought I hated the language. If one gives German along with any foreign language a chance, unlimited opportunities await. I'd like to visit Vienna and Berlin myself.

Depending on the regions of German speaking countries, German can range from harsh and gutteral sounding to quite mellifluous. Austrian German is much easier on the ear although I'm used to this as my dad's from Austria. One thing I find a bit irritating are nouns such as Luftkissenfahrzeug (literally air cushion vehicle)hovercraft)which are quite clumsy. It'd be better to make up completely new words

German sounds evil to me. You could describe a child playing with his dog in German and it would sound like a satanic verse to me.

I spoke German fluently years ago. I liked the complete pronunciation of letters in words, the way you could link words togeather to make these huge words like Geschwedigskeitsbegerndszone and Autobushaltestelle and those magnificent run-on sentances achieved by abusing the verbs. German has only about 45,000 or less words and a gender system with no rules-of-thumb as to how to apply it.

I learnt German before I was too young to understand that I might be a pretentious jerkoff. But I am European, so perhaps I am saved.

A lot of pretentious jerkoffs like to learn this language...my freshman year roommate being one of them. I'm sure it's fun to learn, but utterly useless unless you're European.

Learned a little bit, has similarities to English, some vague similarities to the Latin languages (i'm also a spanish speaker) but it can get quite boring after a while. Very mechanical language.

I had the choice to study either french or german and i LOVED to study german. German is a lovely language, it's so cool sounding

Can be maddening, especially learning the cases, and that separable verb bit struck me as ridiculous, with the first part of the verb at the start of the sentence and then the rest following a hundred words later--but it's a useful language and has a lot of English cognates so it's not too hard to learn the vocabulary. I had to learn to read it to get my Ph.D. but I never did learn to speak it.

I hear people say that German is the ugliest language on earth, I don't think so... I think it is a beautiful language, maybe it is not as poetic or romantic as French or Italian but German has its charm. The purpose of the language is not for screaming and giving orders only. Sometimes this language is overlooked because it was the language of hitler and giving orders for dogs. I am not a native German speaker, and I used to think this language was the ugliest language ever, but when I took insterest on this language, I became a teutophile, and I love German language more than my mother tongue. Too bad my teacher is one of the worst, his mother tongue is Italian and he learnt German probably when he was around 25 yo of age. He sometimes pronounce the second H in words like Stehen, he pronounces final E as AY not as a schwa. I took Geman in high school and college, and really liked it then. It's not as bad as some people make ti out to be, but on the other hand, does have some annoying quirks (aside from all of the masculine, feminine, and neuter variations in case). My pet peeve is that Germans don't seem to be able to invent any new words; they just take a bunch of existing words, string them all together, and come up with a new word which basically is a description of what the new word intends to convey. Perhaps the classic is Donaudampschiffgesellschaftskapitan, (I think I spelled it correctly), which means Danube River Steamboat Company Captain (but in German, it's just a single word). Things like Fernsprecher (Long distance speaker) for telephone furnish another example. Anyway, I like German, but don't think it's a Five.

I learnt German at school, primarily because both my sisters learnt French and I wanted to do something different. Fortunately I loved learning the language. Some of the words you can understand straight-away because there are similarities between that and English. I found it a very easy language to learn and could identify words and even sentences that I was not familiar with. A very, very good language to learn.

An interesting language. I'm in second-year German in school this year, and won an award for it last year. :) (an interesting note- when, in first-year German we learned the words for who, what, when, where and why, I went home that night and translated Abbott and Costello's entire Who's On First routine into Deutsch! Hee hee!) It's not exactly a pleasant-sounding language, being so guttural and all, but it has an interesting sound and I'm glad to be learning it. One thing I'll say for it: it's much more phonetic than English, and therefore easier to spell and pronounce (except, perhaps, for the fact that W's are pronounced like V's). My only complaint with the language (though other Romance languages share the fault) is the gendered nouns- a pointless complication. Oh well.

Hitler could have made any language appear ugly. Probably because he was high on meth when he would rant and rave before his minions. I'm getting tired of the nazi/german stereotypes. Germany has moved on since then and woud probably like to get out of the little man's shadow.

Ok, everybody, get away from your German/Nazi steriotypes. Yes, it is called German but it is also spoken in Austria and Switzerland. It is awesome because speaking German can be beautiful in its own way. (I know, all those Romance languages are more...romantic) But the best part of German is that you can still sound cool when you are pissed off. I mean, a pissed off French guy just sounds whiny.

I have to admit that German is an interesting language. I don't particularly like how it sounds, but I don't dislike it, either. It sounds guttural and harsh at times but it's a fun language to emulate.

You only have to hear Hitler spit out the words to see what a nasty language this is.

i like the way it sounds. people say it sounds too harsh and ugly but i don't care. it sounds cool to me.
