Gateway Arch

Parking at the parking garage is $6 but it takes you almost right to it. If you go and there is a long line to wait for the metal detectors, go to the other side (opposite the parking area). There isnt anyone there EVER. I'd recommend not going on a holiday weekend because the viewing area is cramped and gets smelly with all of those people. There are some great views from the top and the park is the perfect place for a picnic. The musuem under the arch is not worth your time to go thru unless you are waiting on your turn to go up. It doesnt cost anything but is rather boring. And if you like taffy you have to try the taffy in the old time store...its the best!

I have been going up in the Arch since I was little. And if your in St. Louis you should do it...even if it's just once. It is a very small little box that you go up in though and it shakes and rattles a lot. It seems pretty old. So if you are claustrophobic at all, it may not be for you. But it gives you a great aerial view of the city.

A ride to the top is not worth standing in line for 1-2 hours. If you MUST go to the top, do what the locals do: buy your tickets online. If you have one day to spend in St Louis, look at the Arch from the ground, take the money you saved to the City Museum, one mile away, where you and the kids will have a much better time.

The Arch trip is fun and the small museum at the base is pretty nice. Really enjoyed the movie they showed on Lewis & Clark.

Build an identical one next to it and start serving hamburgers. Pathetic attraction. Intended to signify St. Louis is the armpit of America.

St Louis is not and never was considered the gateway to the west. Kansas City was the gateway to the west, but other than the big lie they tell, the Arch is neat.

Fun trip to the top inside tiny 5 person capsules, view of the riverfront is ok-same as from your hotel window.

Very cool to ride up the Gateway Arch in their special elevator and get an interesting view of St. Louis from 630 feet up. I'm driving to St. Louis this weekend for a wedding, and hope to see the affectionately-named Gateway to the West a second time with college friends.

It is something that St Louis should feel really be proud of as everything else downtown is falling apart...

The ride up the Arch is like an amusement-park ride, and the Arch itself is not the impressive structure I was expecting to see, based on photographs. Since there is little else in downtown St. Louis of interest, the Arch dominates the scenery -- but the Arch is important primarily as an example of "Created History." St. Louis was never the "Gateway to the West." Kansas City & St. Joseph have that title, for that was the western extent of the railroad (prior to 1869) and where the Pony Express, Santa Fe Trail and Oregon Trail all began. But St. Louis built the Arch and had to call it something, so marketing trumped history and St. Louis became the "gateway" it never was.

This $6,000,000 croquet wicket is vastly overrated.

Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to ride in the arch, but from what I heard from my friends, it was awesome. There's a small museum there as well.

The Louis and Clark Museum is great. It is at the bottom of the Arch. The top has a beautiful view of the St.Louis. As for the rest of St. Louis, well, let me put it to you this way, we planned to be there for 5 days, we came home in 2. Boring city. Although we did eat at a place that had great prime rib.

Really cool! You take this Elevator to the top that goes up a few feet then slides sideways then up again. Great view from the top. Feel the sway.

Definitely worth seeing even if only a drive by.
