Wed Apr 18 2007Takes talent and reins them in. A good example is the way he managed Nik Caner-Medley. Sure, the dude played out of control often, but it seems as if Gary "snipped" him into a hanging-out-in-the-corner-of-the-3-pt-arc kinda player. So...Question: Who's the only person who can keep Mike Jones under 20 points a game?Answer: Gary WilliamsScreams and screams, and if that doesn't get the results he wants he screams and screams and...Gary Williams teams have a certain look about them: They play as if they are losing even if they're winning...they look like they're losing. Too many turnovers, what's an offensive rebound, coach? What's a "go to" guy, coach? If you keep recruiting slack-jawed dopes from Prince Georges and Montgomery counties, you'll have the University of Maryland basketball team. Brenda Frese gets a better brand of recruits and is a better overall coach--at least her players can drop in the free throws and don't self-destruct the way the men's team does.

Thu Feb 09 2006The best coach in this league because he always gets his teams to play above their talent level. Rarely a blue chip player or McDonalds All-American and yet Maryland consistentlybeats Duke and is always in the mix at the end. THAT is true coaching my friend. Conversely, Coach K and Duke is LOADED with the best talent in America (how much are they paying those recruits nowadays?) yet almost always plays below their talent level. Duke is a program that should be in the Final Four every year with the talent they have. Anything less is an abject failure.

Thu Jan 20 2005Decent teacher as a coach, but too lazy to recruit blue chip players. Can't dominate ACC despite Maryland's low academic standards. A paranoid schizophrenic. Also needs sweat gland reduction surgery.

Sat Jan 01 2005Great coach who is just now reaping the rewards of his greatness. National Champion coach and won the ACC tournament with a middle-of-the-pack team in 2004. He was great going back to BC and Ohio State. His teams are tough and fun to watch. He's not a great recruiter, but manages to get the kids he has to play well for him. Has the job he's wanted in Maryland and has set the table for himself to be there for as long as he wishes. Expect him to continue to field very strong teams with few ,if any, lean years.

Tue Dec 21 2004I think he is one of the best coachs in Maryland. Even though he lost two games this year. He always had a good defence but for me to give him 5 stars he would have to inprove his offence.

Sun Dec 05 2004Fantastic coach wears his heart on his sleeve, tireless sweathog, letsplayers know how to become better and w/luck make it to nba, no promises! can lead them to final four with underated talent players with a lotta heart! Will watch out for players after graduating (KEITH BOOTH) 1 of his best certainly going against TIM D! Will beat Duke!

Wed Apr 14 2004Definitely another example of a great coach in the ACC. Awesome program, AND also a program where everyone graduates! Steve Francis did too.

Thu Mar 25 2004Leaving his mark as one of the great coaches of his era.

Mon Feb 09 2004This guy is a good coach. He allowed Juan Dixon to lead him to a national title! And he pwns UNC :( But hey, this guy sweats like Christian Laettner and Brian Davis in a Duke sauna. This guy is probably the 4th best coach in the ACC behind Herb Sendek, Kay Yow and Pete Gillen

Sun Feb 08 2004Did you know that GW used to be one of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? But he insisted they hang out at the College Park campus. The other TMNT's wanted someplace nicer, so voted GW out and moved to the sewer. Fear the turtle, because you don't know where it's been.

Fri Jan 02 2004Perhaps the most underrated developers of talent in the country. The man has had half of the heralded blue-chippers of Duke and Carolina yet has been competitive with those two conference foes. Simply isn't given nearly as much respect as he deserves; despite what Tobacco Roadies claim, he isn't the other Williams in the ACC.

Mon Dec 29 2003Does not have anything on Coach Sendek of NCSU except a few more wins, a National Championship, and a few more positive things. Just give Coach Sendek a little more time and we'll see.

Mon Dec 29 2003Although I don't normally like older guys, Gary is surprisingly gentle in bed.

Mon Dec 29 2003He is a #$%&ing; #@%hole and so are his #$%&ing; players. I spit on him.

Sun Dec 28 2003Does more with less talent than anybody.

Fri Dec 26 2003The most underrated great coach in the land. Nobody is more prepared. The best college coach in the land, for winning, teaching, and putting players in the Association.

Thu Nov 06 2003Gary Williams built Maryland from NCAA sanctions and a 2-14 ACC record--to one of the premiere programs in America. Hes also sent 27 players to the NBA--and has as many current NBA players--at 8, as does Chefsky. Only Coach K reached that total with 33 Mcdonalds All Americans--while Gary did it with exactly THREE. Fantastic Coach. Theres a reason CBS ranks him #3 in the nation.

Fri Jun 13 2003This guy has taken talent that other coaches scoffed at and ended up beating them with those players. He runs a clean program and is determined to "coach" rather than be a "used car salesman" and recruit only. The only coach to win without a McDonalds All American on his team since the second year of announcing McDonalds All Americans.

Fri Apr 25 2003Look no further than the 2002-03 edition of the Terps for a measure of how great a coach GW is. A team that lost four starters (three to the NBA, no less), that wasn't all that highly regarded before the season started, still managed to make it to the school's tenth straight NCAA tournament. On top of that, they made their seventh Sweet Sixteen in the last ten years, came within a shot of the Elite Elight, and was ranked in the Top 10 of the Final AP Poll for the fourth time in the last five years. With the incoming frosh and the sensational sophs, expect another title run within the next couple of years.

Wed Apr 02 2003a fairly good coach...

Fri Feb 28 2003Nobody wins more with less. While McD AA's go to Puke and AZ, he wins with players barely recruited. Now that he has a ring, he can seriously recruit these SuperPrep stars like Lute or Krzyzewski. MD will be off the meter in 4 more years.

Mon Nov 08 1999Gary Williams has a supernatural way to underutilize his talented players.
