Sun Feb 20 2011Absolutely reeks in a pet bed/animal barn kind of way. I honestly don't understand why people buy this product. I live in an apartment complex and several units share laundry facilities. Whenever I suddenly smell "barn smell," I know someone is using stinky Gain to wash their clothes. And the scent lingers and hangs on everything. I'd rather smell B.O. than Gain.

Mon Jan 24 2011STINKS! Gain "Original Fresh" stinks to high-heaven! I put 1/8 of the recommended and it still makes my 3-year-old say his clothes stink and gives him a body rash. Never aGain!

Fri Dec 03 2010Loved the original scented Gain. Could you bring it back please? Or make a new product with the exact same scent as the original-scented Gain manufactured in the 70s, 80s and early 90s. I mean, like, what's one more scent among the already numerous "World of Scents" choices? At least you'd be making more sales with the inclusion of the original nostalgic scent. The last time I bought Gain was in the '90s before the "Fresh" scent came along and replaced it. My guests have not commented on the nostalgic clean scent of my sheets and towels since. Nor has anyone hugged me and said, "Umm I love the smell of your clothes, what laundry detergent do you use?" C'mon marketing people. Listen up. Bring back that nostalgic scent that comforts us and takes us back to less stressful times. I, for one, would be grateful for the rest of my days.

Mon May 24 2010I am a single adult male with a son at home. I bought my first box of Gain fresh scent because the stores locally no longer stocked Cheer in the powder form. After my first box, I would say it performs well and seems a little less harsh than the Cheer. I believe the real test will come over the summer, lets see how it acts on difficult stains. As an aside, I always use Shout or something similar on tough stains prior to the wash and I would never buy artificially scented detergents or fabric softeners. I will try it again.

Sun Jan 31 2010The so called Fresh Scent of liquid Gain makes me sick. It makes me think of those men who don't know how to wear fragrance so overwhelm the people around them with the pervading stink of it. It IS a male type 'fragrance' -- certainly not female or neutral. Or... I'll go with the Bug Spray idea. I have a load washing downstairs -- and I CAN SMELL IT UP HERE! Even putting the clothes through an extra rinse doesn't take it away. I will NEVER EVER buy it again, and will tell anyone in the aisle what I think of it. I only wish I could afford to throw it away. NEVER have I had a laundry detergent that was so objectionable. Doing laundry is bad enough without having to SMELL it for months afterward! P U P&G!

Tue Apr 14 2009If Tide is considered 100% then I would say Gain is 90%.It comes in a few good scents and works almost as good as Tide but not quite.A complaint I have with this product is with the original scent it smells good but when I wash my towels with it they smell little like mildew as soon as they get wet.I notice the scent when the clothes are wet and about to go into the dryer also.I never have that problem with Tide especially with Tide powder.I would just recommend this detergent for clothes that aren't so dirty but I would reccomend a better detergent like Tide for whites or clothes that are dirtier.

Fri Apr 10 2009Oooof! Ultra Gain 2x will not get my clothes clean. I don't get my clothes that dirty but Gain refuses to help me with every day food stains. Some crusty chocolate icing on my jeans? Still there. After two washings-- it's still there. Also, my towels smell like mildew. They smell fine when I take them out of the dryer. When they are damp right after a shower they have a distinct mildew smell. What is going on with that? Yuck I'm done with you, Ultra Gain!

Wed Jan 30 2008This cleans okay, but not well enough for the price. It cost about the same as Cheer here. It does smell really good, but I'm not one for heavily scented detergents. I find heavy scents to be irritating after a while, both physically and emotionally. Heavy perfumes get on my nerves. I do not feel confident that it prevents fading either. This is not one that I would repurchase.

Wed Aug 08 2007Clothes just didn't come clean. Towels were OK but I had a shirt that I got some mustard on. Using Gain the stain did not come out. Washed again in Tide didn't come out. Used the SA8 from Amway Stain gone.

Mon Jul 23 2007Gain stinks to high heaven. Do not use this product. It leaves this stinky mildew scent on your clothes especially your towels.

Sun May 20 2007Ths does a pretty good job it smells nice but not as good as tide though. Tide is the same prie almost and tide works a little better but i would reccomend it

Thu Jan 11 2007I hate clothes that STINK. There is nothing worse than trying to speak with someone face-to-face whose clothes exude a miasma of stale Cigarillos, which is what Gain smells like to me. Perfume does not equal clean.

Sun Sep 24 2006My grandmother turned my mother onto Gain, who turned me onto it. It does have a great smell, leaves clothes smelling fresh. I would probably rate this a 5, except for the following things -- It is pricey in my area (almost the same as Tide). But is on sale more often. -- After I wash towels in Gain, it leaves a mildew smell on my towels after they get wet when drying off. -- Gain is made by P&G; who makes Tide and I have had problems with clothes falling apart using Tide. It also fades jeans really fast.

Sun Feb 26 2006First I like Gain liquid laundry soap because it gets the clothes clean and to top this I love the smell ! The Fabric softener is great also, works well using only a small amount and yet the nice smell is there ! I would never go back to powder detergeants !!

Mon Jan 09 2006IT STINKS TO HIGH HEAVEN! I USED THE ORIGINAL FOR MANY MANY YEARS AS DID MY DAUGHTER AND COUSIN. WE ALL HATE THE NEW OVERPOWERING PERFUME STENCH!!! I HAVE CHANGED TO KIRKLAND BRAND FROM COSTCO. I THINK GAIN SMELLS LIKE FLY SPRAY! I HAVE A NEW BOX I BOUGHT BY MISTAKE A YEAR OR TWO AGO WHEN THEY DISCONTINUED THE ORIGINAL. I DECIDED TO GIVE IT ANOTHER TRY.....AND WALKED BSCK INTO THE HOUSE THE WHOLE HOUSE STUNK AND GAVE ME A HEADACHE. I TOSSED THE ENTIRE BOX IN THE GARBAGE!!

Sat Oct 01 2005The OLD original scent Gain (now discontinued) was the best ever - fresh and clean and the smell stayed around awhile. The new scents are awful - very strong smell and very feminine - not at all fitting for guys. I can't even sit too close to someone who has used the new Gain as they wreak of the scent and, to me, it's just too strong and offensive. Hard to imagine why they'd change such a classic product. And now they have 4 different scents but none is even close to the original scent which was terrific. Very unfortunate and a marketing mistake in my opinion.

Sun Jun 05 2005I like the new scent, though some may find it overpowering. It cleans well and the scent does last quite a long time as I have washed and stored some clothing for a year or so and opened the container up and it is still fairly fresh. However, I was *very* disappointed when the old original scent was discontinued. I feel it was a fresher, less overpowering scent and consider the discontinuation to be a marketing faux pas.

Thu Apr 07 2005we just tried it for the first time i was alittle hesitant cuz the powder version made me sick the one time i used it and the smell overbearing but the liquid is pleasant and it works rather well

Wed Mar 23 2005I love doing laundry, and I cannot do my laundry unless I have Gain! I used the fabric softener and dryer sheets, and my clothes smell FABULOUS! It has always done a great job of cleaning all kinds of stains, and you can't beat that scent! I used the Island Fresh, but they're all great! My house always smells of fresh, clean laundry. I LOVE THIS PRODUCT!!!

Thu Feb 24 2005It is really good and has a wonderful fragrence to it and makes the clothes clean. So i suggest that people so buy it.

Tue Aug 10 2004laundrycleaner Gain new scent is like a males scent. The orginal was like a chalky scent like Tide. I do like Gain, but lately I have enjoyed Fabric Care,Surf-(Bright Sky) Gain powder mixed with Fabric Care Powder gives Gain a softer smell, so I buy them both and mix it together.

Mon Aug 02 2004I LOVE GAIN LAUNDRY DETERGENT..I THINK THAT IT SMELLS GREAT..WHEN MY 1 YEAR OLDS BABYSITTER IS ALWAYS TELLING ME HOW GOOD HE SMELLS IT MAKES ME FEEL GREAT..THANKS GAIN..

Tue Jun 29 2004I bought it recently cause it was on sale, and I loved it, the commercial is true, it smells GREAT. I washed my kids blankets with it and it smelled nice for days. I will be buying more of it for sure.

Mon Apr 26 2004Wow if that wasn't a commercial I don't know what is. After reading that comment I realized that I will never get those 3 seconds of my life back. Thanks, Hockey mom!

Tue Apr 20 2004My name is Denise Johnston. I am a proud mother of a midget hockey player. This season I was in charge of cleaning the team uniforms. The guys always commented on the great smell before a game. It made me proud to have 16-18 yr old boys compliment on the smell after being washed in gain, knowing what they smelled like after the last game :) Thanks from the Big Valley Impact Iceman and MOM :)

Wed Apr 07 2004I love the smell and cleaning power of gain liquid. I have had water and it works better in my water conditions then any other product I've tried.

Mon Mar 22 2004I have always considered GAIN the generic version of TIDE with a prettier smell. It does the job, just not quite as good as TIDE. A great 2nd alternative if the store is out of Tide or Cheer..which is very rare.

Sun Mar 21 2004I visited my sister recently (after nine years away, TOO LONG) and her entire house smelled so good, I wanted to move in with her. She uses Gain, so the minute I got home, I bought some. She uses the powder, but because of our water I use liquid. It all smells great. I do think it is awfully expensive, but it's worth it. I haven't found the fabric softener in Alaska yet... but will try it when I find it.

Thu Feb 12 2004I was in a grocery store the other day and sweeped by another customer. The lady said, You smell nice, what do you have on? Knowing that I do not wear perfume, I thought she had mistaken me for someone else. Plus, I had just finished a power yoga class. I pulled up my cotton hoodie to my nose and smelled the fresh scent of Gain! I laughed and said, I'm wearing Gain.

Thu Dec 11 2003I personally was very disappointed when the original scent Gain was discontinued. I had used Gain for years and my family loved the results.I have happened upon a box or two of the original scent version and needless to say was delighted! I guess it all boils down to a matter of personal opion but feel it was a BAD choice of marketing for Gain. I have no problem with new scents being introduced, but why do away with a good thing.
by lyndalou
Thu Sep 04 2003I love the smell of Gain and if they can smell this good they have to be clean. I have tried others but I always come back to Gain.

Thu Aug 21 2003I don't understand why Gain is getting such a bad rap! I like it but rarely purchase it ONLY because of the price. I HAVE, however, found a FABRIC SOFTENER that made me quickly decide I will no longer use any other fabric softener. GAIN fabric softener makes everything smell SOOOOOO nice! :)

Tue Aug 12 2003The new Gain scents are AWFUL. I used to be a fan of Solo, then I went to Bold which was apparently Solo with a new name. Then when I could no longer fond Bold, I found Gain. This was about 4 years ago. I turned so many people onto it because everyone would tell me that I always smelled so good. It seems to me that the new wave of laundry detergents smell sweet, like candy. I hate it! I won't buy Gain anymore unless they go back to the original scent. I did find that the Wisk with the white cap smells OK. I bought a bottle of that today. Oh, well. Maybe time to go to unscented or a natural biodegradable brand.

Sun Jul 20 2003Once mediocre, Gain has improved considerably in cleaning power. It used to be hard for me to believe it came from the same company that makes Tide. I recommend the Gain with Bleach powder over the just-okay liquid alternative. Aside from being effective, it's a relatively good value.

Sat Jul 19 2003This is not my normal fabric softner but thought I would go ahead and try it. Well, I wish I would have never seen it on the shelf much less buy it. It stinks when the clothes come out of the dryer they smell like someone has had on bug spray after being outside all day. It is horrible!!! This keeps me to staying to my regular laundry products. That is Tide, Snuggle, and Downey. Gain needs to be taken off the shelf.
by rwilbade
Sun Jun 22 2003After complaining to Proctor and Gamble they said they would never return the original scent. I feel the "Gain Team" are a bunch of college grads who have no clue on how laundry is done. I have clothes from 2 years ago in my closet that still have the original scent. They should keep the original scent even if they have 40 new scents. Look what happened to Coke when they tried to change the original. I will not buy Gain again until the original scent returns!

Sat May 31 2003I love the smell of it i thinks its the best

Fri May 30 2003IF GAIN WERE THE SAME AS ITS ORIGINAL FORMULA I WOULD BUY IT EACH TIME I NEEDED SOAP I BUY IT ONLY WHEN I FIND AN OCCASIONAL BOX LYING ON A SHELF OF A DISCOUNT STORE WHICH IS RARE BECAUSE I CAN NO LONGER FIND THE ORIGINAL FORMULA
by dvvvc084
Thu Apr 10 2003the smell of GAIN is the worst!! It doesnt go away...ok so them you add fabric softner to it and it is anough to make you puke! smells like a person bathed in mens cologne....fire the guy who said adding this smell was a good idea....i know 5 epople who threw what they had in the trash!

Wed Mar 05 2003The perfume in this product is OVERWELMING!!

Tue Oct 01 2002I love Gain; absolutely no laundry product leaves that fresh, scrumptious smell. Now if ONLY Gain had a no fade formula. It does fade clothes, and fast.
by katalina
Sat Jan 12 2002Still buy Gain when it's on sale. I do like the scent of Gain but in no way does the fresh scent of Gain stay in clothes for 2 weeks like they advertise on TV. Not even with the so called help of Bounce (Gain scented) fabric softener (which needs to be reformulated) to provide softer better scented results.
by pammy0cd
Mon Oct 15 2001at one time i loved gain but it doesn't smell like it used to it kinda smells bad now
