Thu Feb 11 2010I've owned three Rangers;a'90 2.3 liter manual shift,a '97 2.3 liter 5 speed manual and at present a 2004 3.0 liter automatic. On the two previous Rangers I put around 120,000 miles on each of them with hardly any problems at all.On the '04 at present I have 102.000 on it with only a spring in the steering column replaced and for the first time just this week new rotors put on. This is a 4X2 that mainly is driven on the expressways and NYS Thruway at highway speeds. This truck has more than enough power for me gets around 23-24 MPH,easy to drive and the best truck period that I have ever owned,in fact I had leased this truck for three years and when the lease was up decided to purchase it.I have a small farm tractor that I tow to some local shows and have never lacked for power with this truck.I do change the oil and filter every 4K miles, also I installed a KD air filter on it the first week I had it and I really believe the mileage I get with it and the way it runs is partially due to ... Fri Oct 02 2009I own a 1999 Ford Ranger V6 3.0L Flex Fuel Stepside XLT 4 Door. This truck remains to be my first vehicle. I bought it when I turned 16; 34,000 miles. I've had this truck for almost 7 years now, about 138,000 miles so far and what a joy it has been! It rides just the same as the first day I bought it. No major mechanical problems, little things here and there i.e. EGR valve, solenoid. I couldn't have asked for a better first vehicle. Truck gets about 21MPG or so, can haul literally just about anything, the suicide doors are super cool too! Oh and did I mention the power of the V6, this thing flys...I should know I've gotten three speeding tickets in it, lol! The key to keeping Ford Rangers healthy is simple, change the fluids (i.e. oil, transmission, radiator), change the belts, & wash the darn thing every now and then; trust me, the better you treat your truck, the better it will treat you!

Wed Jul 29 2009Great little truck. I've had my '90 since 2000 & it has 216,000 miles. It's rusty & rides like a typical old truck, but it's one of the most dependable vehicles I've ever owned, & I've owned a lot. I always swore I'd never own a Ford, but this truck changed my way of thinking about Fords

Thu May 14 2009My '98 Ranger can handle anything I throw at it. Making trips to Home Depot, picking up soil from the gardening supply, moving couches, you name it. There's no need to run around town in a V8, and this little truck gets decent mileage whenever I'm driving it.

Tue Jan 27 2009My daughter's on her second one, it has 140k on it. She got rid of her first one after 150k, some Mexicans bought it off her. They knew it had a lot more miles to go.

Sat Jan 10 2009I own 1992 Ford Ranger since 1996 and it's got over 271,00 miles on the original motor. I had to replace the starter, the clutch twice and the slave cylinder. I also had to overhaul the transmission(it's manual). I had to overhaul the entire A/C system just a year ago and replace the radiator and heater core. Other than that I have no complaints about it and I'm still driving it to this day.

Wed Sep 24 2008I own a 1994 Ford Ranger, 3.0 L V6, 2x4 --- has 196,000 on it and runs great. I replaced the starter and had the clutch assembly replaced along w/ slave and master cylinders. It runs great though, and I intend on getting many many more miles out of it.

Sat Nov 17 2007I have a 2004 Ford Ranger. With all of these Shift Solenoid blogs I am reading, can anyone tell me how to locate the shift solenoid/s? Is there a schematic or exploded view of my tranny online. It is a 2004 Ford Ranger FX4. Thanks in advance.

Wed Nov 07 2007Am leasing a 2005 Ranger, the Edge, extended cab, V6, automatic. Good power and is usually dependable. Sometimes has a problem with the ignition lock not unlocking. Road side assistance mentioned that you have to leave the key in the ignition with your foot on the brake and wiggle the steering wheel with both hands. This unlocks the thing. Lately the steering column gear shift refused to move though the engine would start. The solinoid in the steering column had went, a warranty repair. Also had another warranty repair which had to do the air filter. It would be occasionally hard to start in cold weather (I live in Canada). The dealership also just informed me that my brake fluid needs to be flushed as the aluminum brake lines and moisture cause sludge to form. This truck is only two years old with 34,000 kilometers on it and that seems rather dubious to me. When the lease runs out I will turn it back in and find another dealer.

Mon Nov 27 2006I have 2 Ford Rangers one is a 1988 4wd regular cab with the 2.9 V6 EFI. Still kickin at 304,000 miles with the clutch and electrical ignition switch being replaced around 300,000. I love this truck. Not only is it a 5 speed but it has the straight axle, manual lockin hubs, and dogleg 4wd. It still gets 16 miles per gallon around town. The only problem we had out of this one was when 1 night we were conn huntin and the radiator overheated and we poured creek water in it to cool it down. We even used it one night to pull a 4wd S10 out of the mud. As far as im concerned chevrolet sucks. Im hopin this truck will get me at least 400,000 since I know quite a few people have had rangers with 500,000 miles. My 2nd ranger which is a 99 4wd sittin on 31 X 10.50 Bfgoodrich allterrains. It has 132,000 and still kickin with just the fan clutch being replaced. The only problem is with those automatic lockin hubs which freeze up on me and the gas sucks at 12 miles per gallon. Overall Im a true Ford ... Read more

Tue Jun 27 20062002 Ranger. Purchased new. Worst vehicle I've ever owned.I have maintained proper service and have the records to prove it.Bad Clutch at 38,000 and lost 2nd gear then.Been shifting from 1st to 3rd since. (new tranny $1,000 to 1,800). Total brake failure at 50,000. Brakes "squeaked" on Thursday night, and blew out cylinders by noon friday noon. (Bypassed "grind" altogether). At 85,000 no a/c and rough idle. I will NEVER buy a Ford again. Spent Spent $ 2,200 in repairs so far and I would have to spend $ 4,000.00 ($ 1,800.00 tranny and $ 2,300.00 a/c) to make it right. I am trading it in for a Toyota Tacoma A.S.A.P. P.S.- I am still one year away from payoff!

Tue May 30 2006I've owned several of these wonderful little trucks and every time I sell them I miss them. I had a New 1994 3.0L 2wd 3:45 rear end gears @ 75MPH it got 30-31MPG Rode very smooth w/rear mono-leaf great power 5spd.man., 1996 3.0L 4X4 V-6 4wd 3:73's pretty pick-up Saphire blue and put 6" susp. 3" body 36's Very stout drive train,as crazy as this sounds I used to race people light to light in town in 4wd low and launch off the light in 2nd and go through the gears people were amazed at how extremely quick it was all wheels hooking up nobody could touch it light to light, 1998 4X4 4.0L 5spd. auto trans. 2nd yr. in production loved the trans. and motor always had lottsa power, used 1993 2wd 4.0L 3:08's 5spd. Man. hard to keep from Frying the 14" tires every time you took off. This was one of the funnest vehicles I've ever owned racing down the freeway the trucks speedo (after I disconnected the two wire governor @ the transmission)would spool all the way around to zero it went so fast. Thu Nov 03 20052003 Ranger, 4.0l, 5spd, 4.10 limited slip diffs, 32" TSLs, Flowmaster. 16 miles per gallon. Off road weekly, and intensly (with jeeps on 33"+ and lockers) That being said, this truck is the best vehicle I've ever owned, it has plenty of power, comfortable, nice interior, and is very fun to drive, I now have approx 44,000 miles on it, and have had it for about 1 year. I use my truck for everything from going out partying in, to moving, to wheeling, to daily driving. The only things I don't like are the low gas mileage, but I drive hard. Also the fact that the front axle does not articulate, and that I've gone through 3 fan clutches so far, also replaced the slave cylinder at 35,000 miles. I have now power accessories, other than steering, and Air conditioning. This truck is the best of 5 rangers I've owned (I've owned 83,86,88,90,03) and I would never think of getting rid of it as it gets plenty of comments, can waste a honda in a street race, and still schools Jeeps and Hummers... Sat Oct 08 2005Great truck. I have a 98 ranger 2wd with 155,000 miles and have had no troubles out of the ordinary. I maintain it regularly, i.e. T-belt, oil changes and other maintance stuff. I've owned GM and Chrystler and neither were as dependable as my ford. I will be buying another ford! Admittedly my 2wd is a 4cyl and is underpowered so I will be opting for a bigger engine next time.

Sun Sep 25 2005Mine is a '99, 4liter V6 4X4. It gets about 18 miles to the gallon. I like it because I've had it for 4 years and it hasn't given me any troubles yet. Knock on wood... It has about 58k miles on it and still gets me to work every day. This is my first Ford. I hesitated to go with Ford but it runs better than any Chevy I've ever had.

Sat Jun 19 2004i bought my 98 4cyl in Jan. of 99 and it is the best car/truck i've ever owned...i make a lot of deliveries in it and it has over 230,000 miles on it and still running...besides normal wear and tear like brakes and batteries the timing belt and clutch are the only things i've had to replace...the clutch went out when it had around 215,000 miles...the auto repair shop where i buy my tires are always surpise it's still running when i go there...i've heard that fords usually isn't known to get high miles and keeps breaking down but i've been very happy with mine...this is my first ford and i don't know if i just got luck with this one

Tue May 25 2004I got a 2004 Ranger FX4 Level II.. Worst truck I've ever owned. Based on my experience with this truck I will never buy a ford again. This truck feals so checp and sweeks & rattels so much that I feal like i'm driving one of those battery powered barbie jeeps. FORD Fix Or Repair Daily. Well I've had a problem almost every week.. I have 10,000kms on it and it's been in the shop 8 times. I had a 1994 ranger and loved it.. The new ford products SUCK ....

Wed Apr 07 2004I gave this truck a two star rating because it is American made ,Othrewise its a one. Dont buy this with the idea great trucks are built, not bought. What you test drive is all youre going to get. This is not a expandable platform at all I dont care how much Flowmaster , B&M; or after market reprograming you do you'll not do as well as a stock chevy or Dodge V-8 for the same money, However for a cheap little delivery vehicle at a cheap price go for it, as for my daily driver its sad, slow and a real eago booster for the little old lady who leaves me behind at the red light. 3.0 5 sprrd standard

Thu Jul 17 2003I have a 2001 Ford Ranger and I have had it for 3 weeks now and I love it, its has almost all the options including power windows, locks, and mirrors, and it also has the 4th door. It has an automatic transmission w/ the 3.0 V6 and it gives power whenever needed, havent had a problem out of my ranger yet. It didnt come with fog lights or running bars but I will b geting them soon, this is a very durable truck and mine has 29,000.

Wed Jun 25 2003Sucks! Driving along when the engine just exploded with no cause.Dealor could'nt even figure out why. The interior is small and cramped. only good thing is 4.0L wish that was the engine I had.

Thu Jun 05 2003In 1994 I bought a brand new Ford Ranger for $7700. It was a white, no option stripped down version. A very dull, underpowered (4 cyl) truck. But never gave me a single problem in the four years I owned it. I lived in the South and this truck had no AC. If I do buy another Ranger, I'll make sure mine comes with power steering, AC, radio, carpeting, etc. Also I'll take mine with a more powerful engine.

Tue Apr 29 2003I haven't had any problems with mine and would buy another one in a heartbeat.

Tue Apr 29 2003A very durable and dependable pickup. I have a friend who doesn't even like Fords but he bought one of these anyway, because it was too good to pass up.

Mon Apr 28 2003I just bought a really nice 2000 extra cab used because I could not afford a Toyota My ranger has 6 cylainders and is a five speed cylinder. I get 9, that's ( miles per gallon. I have never had a car so bad. It is comfortabble though My 1992 automatic got 13

Tue Feb 18 2003Best small truck. You can get a 4X4 Quad Cab for less than $25,000. Need a crew cab small truck? Get the Explorer Sport Trac, its based on the Ranger and Explorer.

Tue Mar 05 2002This Ranger is a 2001. I know it's a half a truck, but it's all I could afford. You see Ford rents our large parking lot as a depot for Rangers to be shipped to dealers around the country, so I've looked at alot of them. The back flip down seats suck, my kids won't ride in the back because they're heads hit the back window. I find myself looking around the rear view mirror to see traffic ahead and to the right. I still don't understand the plastic sides on top of the sides of the box. The things I do like, the side doors, CD player and sound systems great, on the fly 4 wheel drive. I hope Ford can fix these problems someday because there's no room for three kids and an Adult in the front.

Sat May 05 2001I feel I would love to have this truck. I'm 16 and my dad has a F150 so He could have the daddy truck and I could have the junior truck. I love this truck. I love fords in general. I give is a 4.

Tue Apr 24 2001Great little truck, good sound system. Only problem is with the engine in idle, it seems like it is going to die (independent of fuel quality). After 23,000+ miles, I still love this thing!
by elwaylite
Wed Jan 24 2001I am a big fan of Ford, this is my 2nd ranger and i have to agree with the fact that the newer rangers dont have great quality..I owned a 98 which was great but i only had it for 18k miles, my 99 now has 35k miles and has developed squeeks, whines and other annoying noises, and my 3.0 acts funny sometimes wanting to die out....I just think by sellin so many the quality has gone down..if you want one get a pre 98 and get atleast the 4.0 v6 ....also be prepared for TERRIBLE gas mileage.
by jnagy787
Fri Dec 29 2000'92 ext cab 4.0L 5spd automatic....carried 1000 pounds of tools and a big cap for 249,990 highway miles (18 gpm) to date.....Good workmanship (love the UAW members)....poor engineering.....lots of maintenance....If I could, I would tether Ford Engineers into Purgatory for a million years, for their extremely fragile Air Conditioning system, ($3000.00 actual maintenance cost)... and because the 5speed automatic tranny DEMANDS filter and FULL service every 15,000 miles (not 30,000 miles as Engineers claim in owner's manual)....replacement/towing/second replacement cost $3700.00 and much inconvenience to learn that little truth. Smart Mechanic says that -A4LD tranny is still poison in 2000.

Mon Jun 05 2000I'm not really a pickup truck kinda guy but I rented one of these for an extended period of time and I have to say I was quite impressed. Perhaps I don't have a lot to compare it to other than the occasional ride in someone else's truck but I really liked this truck. Not much acceleration but hey it's a truck right. Comfortable inside I drove it on a couple of 17 hour trips. I found it to be quiet on the highway, smooth riding, easy to handle, great visibility from all directions, very very accomodating. The only complaint I have is that with the hardcover for the bed there wasn't a lot of height to carry stuff. From the bed to the cover is probably only aobut 2 feet.

Fri Mar 10 2000The best truck I ever owned.

Sat Feb 19 2000This is the best selling-WORST built truck in America. Pingig, mis-aligned welds, shoddy workmanship, and NO POWER, except for 4.0's which have decent power. This truck has many problems beginning with the 98 model year.
