I was visiting from Washington D.C. and meeting friends that i haven't seen in 18 years. Very nervous, tired, and hungry. We met there and i had the best steak in my lifetime! The salad and potatoes were incredible!A very nice surprise, not to mention the bar made the perfect white russians for me!To sum up my experience,I was put at ease from the service, mood, and food!!Great place to eat,or to just meet friends, thanks!!

Maybe I am confused, but $$ I thought this meant moderate prices while $ meant cheap. Cocktails for $10 has become a trend in San Francisco and put the meal for two that inlcuded the lamb burger, the duck and Veggy Kesteh (doubtful on the spelling) and two cocktails put us at over $70. The menu is varied but the entry average price of $22 I don't think is that moderate. This review I guess is more about the people who are marking this with only $$.

The classic red awning, outdoor bistro seats and sculpted hedges outside this 1906- vintage bistro make it feel like something you'd find in some tastefully posh part of London--upscale, but old money rather than new--and the red lacquered woodwork, warm sconces, and the baby grand in the corner keep it in that class. Chef Hoss Zare's French-Mediterranean menu reflects California's bounty of fresh fish, meat and produce (Smoked trout w/ roe, cucumber fettuccini, and dill crème fraiche; braised single-bone short ribs w/ foie gras-truffle oil bone marrow and tomato confit), while pastry ace (and Top Chef alum) Marisa Churchill's desserts--think Goat cheese cheesecake w/ fresh figs, lavender blossom syrup and toasted pistachios--shore up the sweet side of things. Historic, bizarrely named and now masterfully cheffed, Zare simultaneously pays homage to the past while asserting itself as an instant classic.

Went here just a few days after opening and had a lovely evening. Everything was very well done. The food was delicious, service impeccable and a very nice ambiance. Our waitress (Meg?) was so sweet and had excellent wine recommendations. Even the table stewards were courteous and quick on the water refills. Chef Zare himself came out and spoke with us and was so pleasant and genuine. The goat cheese cheesecake was faaaabulous and what I didn't know before we went was that the pastry chef was a contestant on season 2 of Top Chef. Would definitely go here again!!!

Great new restaurant at the old fly trap. Very exciting Mediterranean cuisine. We had dinner there last night and we very happy with everything. Great lamb burger and the salmon was too good. Try the avocado dip appetizer and the butter lettuce salad. Will be going back there soon!

moved to San Fran for project work mid Dec 2007 and I am still here May 2008. The fly trap was my first dining restaurant and quickly became my place 2-3 nights per week. The service and food is fanominal, and I do eat out alot. Where do get consistant professional servers who are truely knowledgable of wine and there specialties. Meg & Jay are the two staff that I first met and always enjoy seeing when I visit for dinner or just the odd drop in for a drink. Fernado and the other staff are equally professional and well informed. I sincerely recommend this place for a nice dinner either casual or for the someone special. 10 out of 10 for me for food and service. I have never given a 10, but what does if for me is also the little things, and they have it. A fine gentleman who helps the wait and bar staff, is always focused and doing the bread servings, always have a full glass of water and a clean table between servings. If I were the owner I would be proud!!! Dave O

Very good food and service. The restaurant is very cozy and romantic. There are always excellent specials and a beautiful wine list with some very good values. We love visiting this unique restaurant on every trip to SF. Upscale in fashion crowd.

We loved this restaurant! The service was excellent, the ambience was beautiful, the food was delicious. The extra bonus was the lovely live music. This is a great place to go for a romantic dinner.

Business lunch or a romantic dinner, the Flytrap Restaurant is without hesitation the best, most esthetically pleasing place in the city. Lively yet quiet enough to have a discreet conversation. Sophisticated ambiance and decor worthy of a presidential dining room. A great selection on the menu with each dish a gustatory masterpiece. I highly recommend the Fly Trap for any truly special occasion.

This is one of those places I REALLY wanted to like. Upon arrival (christmas night at 930pm) i was happy...it was cozy and there was a piano player. Sat at the bar, service was great. We ordered the french onion soup $7---tasty, pretty decent beef stock and great cheese/bread quantity. THe lobster bisque---blah, rich but bland. THe calamari---blah, slighty cold, REALLY BLAND. Tried ordering the Chicken Jeruslem but they were completely out of chicken :(. Ordered the Halibut special---it was OK, nothing special at all and slightly over cooked. The New Zealand sparkling wine was nice, the chardonnay options were not good. Overall I might stop in for a drink again---but thats it.

In Short Media and design professionals from surrounding offices may choose to power at these elegant tables, but that doesn't make the space any less romantic. Wallpapered in antique prints and hung with chandeliers, this white-tablecloth restaurant boasts a long history of "classic" food--sauteed sweetbreads, rack of lamb and coq au vin--as well as Mediterranean soups, salads and sides. The full piano bar attracts a refined happy-hour crowd there for the inexpensive champagne and oysters on the half shell.

Not only was this half-moon pasta killer, the service was very efficient and friendly and the wood paneled interior was quant and inviting. I followed the caesar and pasta with an amazing tiramisu. Highly Recommended!!

Something very nice is happening at flytrap. As soon as we walked in we were greeted with wonderful live music and a very freindly server named Thomas who helped us out of our coats and into a great booth in the corner. The lamb and the skewers were the biggest hits at our table, and the David Bruce Pinot noir was excellent. We definetly got the impression that this place was changing and you could tell by the friendly and attentive staff who were happy to do anything we asked of them. The rest of the tables were packed with couples drinking champagne on rose petaled tables. It was such a romantic place! Everyone that dined with us on that saturday called afterard to thank me for such a wonderful dinner, i simply had to write something on here. I will definetly be going back. hope you enjoy!

Both my boyfriend and I certainly enjoyed our visit to The Fly Trap Restaurant last Friday. Very romantic. The food was outstanding and the service they provided was extraordinary. We really enjoyed the live piano music that they have. My advice is not to be seated next to the piano, because it can get kind of loud.

Wonderful food, warm, romantic atmosphere, but very disappointed over having to wait 50 minutes past our 8pm scheduled reservation. We were just about to walk out when our table was called. Thankfully the delicious crabcakes, flavorful lamb chops and amazingly decadent desserts made up for the wait.

I have been to this restaurant on a few occasions and my experiences in the past, as far as service is concerned, have been fair. Well, as of today, I would say Fly Trap needs to REALLY scrutinize their waitstaff. The waitress did not know what sort of fish was in the "Fry" dish listed on the lunch menu. She then disappeared and was replaced by a gentleman who, though attentive, was terse in demeanor. Good food, nice ambiance, need to re-train or replace current waitstaff as of 07/09/03.

I've been a semi-regular at the Fly Trap for many years and have never been disappointed until this evening. On the plus side, the food has always been terrific, perfect prep and presentation. On the minus side, service can be dicey. Our party's server tonight was pleasant at first, but quite slow and seldom seen throughout the meal. Her initial amiability vanished when we declined dessert, then became downright frosty when, after paying the bill in cash, we had the nerve (after about 20 minutes) to ask for our change (she apparently thought it was all hers, which in this case would've been about a 30 percent tip). But hopefully this was an isolated case. The food's the main thing!
