A bit over rated, but brilliant nevertheless at the division commander level.

a great tactician who knew how to inspire his troups. maybe he is more suited to smaller formations but you have to remember one thing: he was NEVER beaten by an equally strong opponent. when he had to retreat his enemys had more troups, better supplies and the total air superiority.

Rommel was my favorite of all nazi generals. His reputation was such that even Churchill made references to his cunning in the House of Commons. I agree he tended to be somewhat overrated, but had a great deal of respect from his adversaries. And anybody who would defy that monster Hitler, has my respect.

A strong commander of smaller formations of Corps level or less, but over rated, and especially with regards to the defense against the Allied invasion. Rundstedt had a better plan.

not the greatest general, his performance in France landed him in charge of the Afrika Korps and although he wasn't outstanding in Africa he was as good or there abouts as any allied General that faced him

Best general.Thats all i can say! He had far less men and equipment, and repitetly won against british! He also was right about Normandy invasion! I,m sure he would have proven him self vary good if he were on Eastern Front!! Defenetly in same caliber as Guderian!! P.s I wish Hasso von ManTeuffel is on this list, since he is one of top 5 as well!

A bit over rated, but a brilliant tactical commander. More suited to smaller formations (less than army), but nevertheless a great soldier.

Easily the most popular German General in the West. I find that his command of the Seventh Panzer Division in France was his most impressive military conquest. His crossing of the Meuse River was a tactical triumph. His command of the Afrika Korps was good, but it wasn't outstanding. He never really faced a good opposition until the First Battle of El Alamein and Operation Torch. His defense of Tunisia was a hard fought battle in vain. My personal opinion is that Rommel's campaign in Africa and his command of the Afrika Korp was overrated in its importance to the German Reich and his brilliance in the desert. One of the main reasons why he is seen as a great commander was because German and British propaganda made it that way. The German's made Rommel look invincible to get the citizens of Germany's eyes away from the horror that was the Soviet Union and the failure of Operation Typhoon. The British did it to make up for their incompetent leaders. As he returned to France he ... Read more

A good general, though a bit over rated (in that many think he was Germany's best).. he was nevertheless a great offensive commander and was able to do a lot with a rather small formation in the Afrika Korps. His supply lines were stretched a bit, but that was not so much his fault, but rather the fault of Kesselring. Another reason he is so very liked is the fact that he was forced to commit suicide by the Nazi's for his involvement in the assassination attempt of Adolf Hitler.

A very fine general, just a little overrated, because of the legend that developed around his abilities (which were largely anecdotal accounts of his spectacular victories against less than elite troops). I have more admiration for his personal ethics than most Nazi generals, though, because of his heroic decision to oppose Hitler, which cost him his life.

A very good general, both in France and in North Africa. Hampered, as most of the Reich's generals were by inept political meddling (And thank God for that.) Commented that North Africa was a tactician's Paradise and a quartermaster's Hell. A man of some honour and integrity as well, which cost him his life.
