In my opinion it will never see combat or at best very limited combat. They are just too costly to chance losing, much as is our B1 and B2 bombers. These super expensive aircraft have already proven more costly to maintain/fly than the old wrecks they are intended to replace. Those that harp on stealth should realize the same thing was said about the Wobbly Gobblin when it first came out. Stealth doesn't stop a bullet as we found out in Serbia. The expensive wreck was promply shipped off to Moscow and I'm sure no expense was spared in figuring out a way around it. Any claim spouted by L.M. is suspect in my book. The F22 currently does have serious issues that need to be addressed. Our aircraft have not really been all that superior to other nations. We just have much better pilots. This has been proven over and over since the 40's. I think this nation would have been much better served with a different design. We tend to think we can win a war just by having the highest tech toys. If t... Read more

Does anyone know how the side-vectoring works on the f-22? I believe that all those triangles coming out the rear are exhaust vector control panels (versus thrust vector controls), and not radar or anything like that. Those triangles mount on the V-cutout part that you see on the sides of the engine tests I've noted on the internet. Those triangles out the rear are vector controllers, not radar or anything like that. Those vector controls mount directly on the engine. Without those, the F-22 would be merely a delta wing fighter and would not be able to rotate in place. Vasco

The Raptor is the best fighter in the world today. It is often criticized for being too expensive , it costs as much as four f-15c's . In several mock dogfights it has taken on over a dozen f-15c's at a time and always came out on top. This fighter is vital to USA's war fighting capabilites and it is worth far more than what we pay for them. We should listen to the top brass in the airforce and buy more of these great aircraft, after all if you don't control the air you don't control your enemy. The F-22 dominates any airspace, and can sneak into enemy teritory and drop jdams with accuracy, and if the enemy is foolish enough to send up fighters to investigate why their assets are blowing up they will get blasted from the sky. P/S The Raptor is the best attack jet in the world ( even though it only carries two 1000 lb. JDAMs)

Is this the last manned fighter to come into service?  Some experts think so.  The F-22 sprang into life as an anti-Soviet machine, but then the pesky Soviet Union imploded.  The need for stealth in light of the much improved air defense systems keeps driving the design of weapons systems.  It will probably evolved to the time that robots will need to pilot to preserved stealth.  Life support systems can then be jettisoned in favor of more stealth in design. The F-22 outclasses anything flying today.

This is the Best Air superiority fighter in the world. Along with far superior aviaonics and maunuverability this could kick any Russian MIG or SU out of the Sky.

Ever shot one down? Neither have I. This thing may be pricey but it can blast anything it faces from the sky. Vectored thrust, advanced radar and weapons, stealth technology, and in a recent excercise even the F-15 didn't know what hit it.

Not actually what it seems to be. & it's too expensive. Actually, Stealth doesn't save it from being shot. but yes.. it's beautiful bird...

The F-22 Raptor is by far the best fighter aircraft in and ever in existence. The F-22 cannot be compared to any other plane in the world in terms of overall performance. The Sukhoi Su-34 is the only aircraft that can come close in terms of manuverability but besides that the one and only contender for the best fighter aircraft of the world today. The F-22 Raptor is stealth unlike any other, has the most advanced avionics in existence that we're aloud to bare knowledge of, holds supercruise capability that alone renders any other planes thrust performance obsolete allowing the F-22 to travel at speeds faster that that of aircraft possessing afterburning technology and with dramaticly less fuel wasted, unparalleled situational awareness, and a record that simply speaks for it self. The F-15E was formerly the hands down superior air-to-air powerhouse in the skys until pitted against the F-22. In a test, one F-22 was put against one, two, four, six, eight F-15E's and one aircraft remained... Read more

i just know that the rhe secret performance about f22 is "f22 can fly in hypersonic speed (mach 11.48)and can reach planet level to the spcae station" so i think f22 is the best fighter in sky

Although a high performance aircraft, this plane was part of ATF program for the cold war. The shear money dumped into this plane has somewhat forced us to push it forward into it's developement and production to give purpose to its ridiculous cost. When the original ATF program was developed the YF-23 Black Widow was a better craft. The Raptor won due to a politician's choice on cost, not capabilities. Even with its stealth technology, infra-red missile technology is farther advanced and to my knowledge there are no aircraft (stealth or not) who can hide their heat signature.

The American F-15E/F Strike Eagle is already known as the worlds best proven fighter aircraft of the world. In friendly matchups against the all new F-22 Raptors, it none of the less lost every single confrontation and by far. For that reason, the F-22 Raptor as to be seen as the best fighter aircraft available these days. Even if not combat proven yet, there is no reason to doubt it will be a sure winner.

you know that i think the f/a/22 raptor should be nuber 1 because it is stealthy and it is more manuverable than the f/a/18 and it is way more advanced than the hornet. plese tell me your opinion

Nothing will come close to out performing this plane including the eurofighter. Stealth is gold in combat. Combined with supercruise and thrust vectoring which plane would effectively beat it in a dogfight?

Well well, a very lethal bird of prey but in my own oppinion it's srill not the best. Five star rated plane must be multi-role, nuclear or conventional attack, hypersonic cruise speed, ultra quiet with no heat signature nuclear-powered engines thus no more inflight refueling, trust vectoring nozzles, stealth features with cloaking device that makes it invincible on the air anf on the ground, armed with stealth long range trust vectoring missiles, and can fire to its enemy with missiles backwardly!, vertical take off and landing, can take enormous weapons payload internally and externally, 30mm bunker piercing homing guns, installed with state of the art electronic instruments , and can even detect and attack enemy submarines, bullet proof fuselage and wings ,no maintenance and most of all at a price of a burger! Well what's the best aircraft on your mind?

Ugly and the most expensive fighter ever built, limited payload, it might kick just about anythings butt, but it makes for a very expensive crater in the ground. Not really a feasible fighter, not enough of a all rounder.

Good, But can't be enough maneuvarable due to its stealth fuselage design. Stealth now is not as useful as it was thought to be. Passive radars can get it easily.

Ive loved fighter Aircraft sense I can remember. Ive always been impressed by their raw performance. With the new F/A-22 Raptor I have to admit to feeling a new emotion regarding fighters. FEAR! The F-22 has the same computing power of two CRAY-1s. Which begs the question, what does a fighter do with that kind of computing power? Along with super cruise and vectored thrust with state of the art stealth it all adds up to one very scary machine. The Raptor also has inherited the philosophy of easy maintenance and quick operational turn around. Air Dominanceany questions?

The new king of fighter aircraft. Fast, quiet on supercruise, tough to get a radar or IR lock on with the new supressive systems built into her, and very maneuverable for her size with vectored exhaust. An ideal replacement for both the venerable F-15 Strike Eagle and the F-14 Tomcat. Now to let the Guard have the 14's and 15's to upgrade their capabilities.

I think this fighter is very overrated. On paper this is a superduper fighter, in reality i'm not sure. The Americans will show rest of the world: See what we can do. Yes on the paper it works, and it is really a beautyful bird.
