Fri Jun 12 2009I watched this movie for the first time about a week ago, and i can see why it is considered a cult classic of the horror genre...because it has all the ingredients. Back then, it must have been considered as quite a shocker, and something completely different. Also, the special effects were pretty awesome then (i'm sure it would have been quite hard to stomach), but not so much now. This film has some truly funny moments, but for me, horror and humor do not mix well..i prefer to see one or the other. I have rated this film as "good", because undeniably, it is what you would expect from a horror movie...and had i been a fan of gore (which i am not), i would have given it five stars. So, all in all, if you like a combination of both horror and humor in a film, great special effects and a huge amount of gore , this is the film for you. Just don't watch it while you're eating your dinner, that's all i can say!

Sun Jun 29 2008Considering the obvious budgetary constraints this was quite imaginative and well made. Not as good as the next in the series but definitely worth a rental.

Mon Apr 14 2008Good for a laugh, but not quite the cult classic that some make it out to be.

Mon Apr 14 2008This flick has so many cliches that we can see on one of our RIA lists that it is almost funny to watch. Never go to an isolated cabin. Never fool with a key to evil. Never play a tape with demonic recordings. Watch out for the guy with the chain saw. Need I go on?

Wed Sep 13 2006Although the sequel is twice as good, this film is still worthy of 5 stars! It actually scared me when I fist saw it, which is what horror movies are supposed to do. The demons in this film are nasty and unrelenting. Definitely recommended to anyone who likes GOOD horror movies. But if you're one of those people who only watch boring black and white snooze fests, or if you gave "Halloween" 5 stars, this might not be for you.

Tue Aug 01 2006Porn for trees. As a kid, thought this was scary and gory. As an adult you can see how cheaply made it was, with really fake special effects. But hey, that makes it even better! Well, funnier. Plus it turns bushwalking into an outlet for sexual frustration. Providing you don't mind thorns.

Fri Oct 21 2005Great movie, it may not seem scary but I watche dit at like three am and I jumped once or twice. How cool was it when he dismembered his girlfriend? THAT WAS AWESOME! WHat's up with the guy who's rating says "not my kind of movie." You should be dissqualified. people want to now how this movie stacks up not what your favorite color is or if you prefer vanilla over chocolate, you prick.

Tue Sep 27 2005..I knew Bruce Campbell when he was a fellow cab driver in Detroit..For me,not quite at a Bela Lugosi level, for example, but not bad..

Tue Sep 20 2005This movie was enormously gross and entertaining. It is also one of the few examples of a good original film and an improved sequel. All 3 Evil Dead flicks (including Army of Darkness) are well worth a modest rental investment at the local video shop.

Fri Aug 12 2005i still remember seeing this movie for the first time i was not even old enough to see r rated movies but i got in and i am so glad i did

Wed Aug 03 2005This movie more than annoyed me. The screeching thing in the cellar was not at all scary, more likely to make you scream from frustration than horror. The acting sucked, but so what, alot of times the worst actors play in great movies. The story could have been so much better, if it had not been so annoying. The potential lost in this movie is sad.

Sun Jan 23 2005THIS ONE IS IN MY COLLECTION. THIS IS THE ABSOLUTE KING OF CHEESY HORROR. THE SPECIAL EFFECTS ARE BAD, THE ACTING IS WORSE, BUT FOR SOME REASON THERE IS SOMETHING SO COOL ABOUT THIS MOVIE. IF YOU ARE A TRUE HORROR FAN YOU HAVE TO SEE THIS ONE.

Fri Dec 31 2004It is quite frightening the first watch or two, and then from there on it is either just pure entertainment or ultimate coolness!

Fri May 07 2004now this is funny. when i 1st saw it i was laughin a whole lot. the series has always managed to make me laugh. i showed this movie to an old friend of mine and i don't see why but it really bothered her. and the ring didn't bother her. i wonder what they were thinkin when they had the tree branch rape scene. another classic moment we will all remember.

Mon May 03 2004Dude, this movie was hilarious!!! I loved it. The laughing demon is great, I do a wonderful imitation. It is definately one of the better low budget films I have ever seen, even if Ashley is a sissy girl who screams alot.

Wed Nov 19 2003Greatest movie ever made. The amount of gore literally knocked me off my seat when i first watched it. I then proceded to watch it again. Rated NC-17 for it extreme violence and gore. Barely any movies get that rating for violence.

Sun Sep 21 2003Scary as hell! I love Bruce Cambell! The first ED was scary,ED2 was scary-funny, and AOD was a riot!I suggest everybody see this movie if you like deadites

Fri Aug 15 2003This first of a trilogy is the scariest and best of the bunch. The second is a comedic/horror movie made with a better budget. The third is a sequal to no.2.This was described by Stephan King as the scariest movie he had ever scene. This is a leave a lite on for virgin viewers movie. This shows what can be done on a small budget as the cast and director were all college students together.

Sun Aug 03 2003Am I not seeing something here? What is so great about this movie? It's a bunch of people getting possesed by demons, getting chopped up, and then turning into claymation and falling apart. The story is as stupid as they come, there is nothing great about this movie. Open your eyes people!!
by lukskywlkr
Sun Jun 22 2003You can tell this thing was made on a shoestring budget, but it was a fairly entertaining movie. The only problem with it is that the violence and gore are so over the top the movie becomes cartoonish and less scary.

Mon Feb 17 2003I really like this movie. I'd watch it a thousand times...The Evil Dead didn't go with the cute jokes and conventional thought for most horror movies. This movie had one thing on its agenda: for people to die. And, die they did. The special effects, while so obviously so, are just gross-looking enough to make you want to gag anyway (and very few things make me want to gag anymore, considering the number of horror movies I've seen). The start of it was great. I didn't think the trees would actually possess her...I thought they'd just raped her (and I thought that was unneccessary, too...). The scene with Ashley attempting to dismember his dead girlfriend was pretty cool. Sam Raimi did a great job on this. Hm. And I'm actually a little put-off by the people who felt they had to leave giant paragraphs of practically nothing more than them referring to themselves in the third person. It makes them sound like deluded egomaniacs.

Thu Nov 01 2001I am a HUGE fan of Bruce Cambell! I even bought the Army of Darkness figurine. These movies are fantastic....if you love horror with a comedic twist these are the movies for you. Also if your into b-movies these are great for sitting back with your friends and having lots of laughs.

Mon Oct 29 2001Now keep in mind that The Glory isn't a huge horror movie fan. Kind of a fan by association. But during a 1 year period The Glory had her fair share of scary-type movies. The Glory didn't think that this one that that scary or that gross. Perhaps the Glory is becoming desensitized. It doesn't matter, The Glory still enjoyed this, the first in the Evil Dead trilogy very much. The Glory did think that 'Ashley' was kinda a wimp, where he is a pretty cool cat with the best catch lines ever in the rest of the series. The Glory also thought that the tree rape scene was kinda unnecessary..but pretty damn cool. Evil Dead kinda set the standard for the following Sam Raimi movies. The darkness ever present beneath the surface..or in the woods. The Glory watched this movie a long time after she first watched Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness and thought that it was pretty neat to see the way the whole thing started. In fact, The Glory would suggest seeing the movies in that order. The Glory highly... Read more

Fri Jul 13 2001I think this is supposed to be serious horror movie which doesn't make sense because the sequels are downright hilarious. It's fun to watch anyways.

Thu Jun 28 2001One of the most original horror movies ever made. Evil Dead was Sam Raimi's first big movie and served him very well. A group of friends rent a nasty old cabin for a weekend but over night it turns into a blood bath after the demon resurection passages from The Necronomicon are resighted and The Evil Dead and its deadites are unleashed. Out of the Evil Dead trilogy, this is the best horror movie. Don't excpect the cute jokes and Bruce Campbell's witty one liners, this is really a horror movie. It is actually very effective in its grotesquness and shock value. When I first saw it I had no idea it was going to be as gory and sick as it was! A great beggining to a great trilogy. Not many trilogys keep their mojo up for the entire series, but Evil Dead does an incredible job of it. HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED FOR YOU AND YOUR BEST MATES!

Tue Jun 26 2001the Shape is unsure how or why you are reading this review. Maybe you are reading it shortly after it was posted because you read every review the Shape writes. Maybe you're reading it because you're a fan of the Shapes work (in which case, thank you). But, this review is primarily written for those who specifically came to this site looking for a review of The Evil Dead. You see, this movie has a very specific niche audience: those who like their horror movies as gory as possible. If you've never heard of this movie, or if you can't stand the sight of fake blood or demon possessions or dismemberment, you might as well press the back button in your browser now and go read the Shapes review of SCREAM or something. There. Hopefully one or two of you stuck around. Now that only the die-hard horror fans remain, the Shape thanks you for reading on. Reviewing anecdote: The first time the Shape watched The Evil Dead, he sat down to watch it at around ten o'clock on a Sunday morning. About h... Read more

Tue Nov 21 2000Incredibly gory, which is great. The scene where the guy gets born again through c-section out of his mother's stomach is pretty crazy.
