I was more of a history student and I hated doing my assignments. In tenth grade I had to have a parent teacher meeting with my English teacher because I was having problems. Part of my problem was the teacher would intentionally pick me to read any embarassing parts of the books we would read out loud in class and I really hated him for it. I somehow managed to pass and the next couple of years I was in the school plays along with the drama classes. I was able to do some community theater work as well and most people think I'm a pretty good public speaker. It could be that what I thought was his picking on me helped me break out of the shell I was in. Whether that was his intention or he was just a jerk I'll never know but it helped me in the long run.

Its easy to learn proper grammar, spelling, etc, what makes english hard is reading all the stories and all the writing, essays are time consuming and can be hard to write due to the fact my mind seems to freeze up on me, however i don't find research papers ( ones where you are allowed to pick anything you want to write about) all that tough, if you pic a subject or thing your really interested in then the writing and what not goes easy, however the art where you have to write your sources is very annoying to me because the title, author, publish date, etc have to be alphabetical order and a report with many resources ccan be tedious to cite the sources

This can be vitally important for those who aspire to be a lawyer, a public speaker, and those who enjoy participating in pool tournaments. Update: Always the last to know, I just learned that this course is now prefaced with the words "Press One For". "I don't rock like dat." Can anyone identify the verb in this sentence?

Always did bad in English. This may have something to do with the fact that I can't Write worth half a damn and my Grammar sucks.

For me, and for most American Americans, this language is super easy. But, for foreigners and people who are deaf or something it can be very difficult. At least it doesn't look like some languages like Chinese where all the so-called "words" look like a 2yr. old tried to draw a house.

Since I don't remember taking any English classes (at all), It's been a trial with lots of errors. With regard to the written word, I try to express my thoughts in a natural way and try not to make a fool of myself. I'm not always successful though. I have a lot of respect for the study of English.

English was easy for me because I'd absorbed it painlessly long before I went to school. However, I can't imagine how anyone not born to it manages to memorize all the wacky exceptions to its rules.

"All I needed, I learned in kindergarten." ~90's Pop psychology~ Word skills are a gift learned through a pencil, keyboard, or -- God help the young -- a text at a time. The study of "English" is academic.

Despite being told many times that the English language has many more words than some other popular languages used in the modern days, my feeling is that English is still one of the easier languages to learn. It is true that the rules are not consistently followed but I doubt any language follows certain rules 100% of the time. In terms of writing, English is relatively easy to get used to since all the words are just some combinations of the 26 letters. In terms of pronounciation, I find the phonetics very basic and pronounceable. It is far better than say, Mandarin which has 5 tones for each pronounceable word.

I only wish this class would have prepared me better for English in college...I don't think some of those English teachers gave us the tools we needed to form sentences much less....

English has been my favorite language ever since I first heard it spoken Actually, I herd it first being sung, and became fascinated by it, even as I couldn't understand a single word. It has such a natural flowing characteristic that is in itself, a melodious language. Later on, when I started to learn it in school, I became even more fascinated by its simplicity and convenient structure. Unlike other languages which are extremely complex in syntax and grammar, English is an easy to learn and speak language. And perhaps this is the reason that it has become the most spoken language in the world. Incidentally, in the whole world there are schools and private learning centers which all offer English as one of the language to learn, while other languages tend to be more regional or limited. I am still in the learning process and still manage to find occasional words or syntax constructions that are fascinating. Love to speak it, write it and even think in it.

depends on the type of english. composition and selective reading english is aight. but reading an old ass english book like shaksphere and writing an essay analyzing it blows harder than even the most difficult math.

It does a great job of adapting and picking up and creating new words. Thankfully it is so dynamic it doesn't have some stupid Academie like the French. English is the language of the conqueror though. A foreign species, it kills off the native tongues.

English is a brutal language to learn. Try explaining the letter X to a Korean. Try explaining the silent g in night. . .there are rules, exceptions, and thousands of tips and lessons that take years to get real proficiency in the language.

I would'nt say that english is the easiest or hardest language to learn, it has some sounds that other langauges don't have, take dutch for instance, the dutch people i can see have a problem doing the ZH sound such as the S in ASIA, having a langauge that you learn related TO english will not make it EASY TO learn, some sounds are different, and the vowel sounds, i have some dutch and hebrew friends, and they couldn't do the ZH sounds, it is also with the spelling of some words, that look and sound the same, and english does have a lot of monophthongs and dipthongs, at least over 40 in all, english has changed a few times in history, like at least 3, and this is the 4th english, when the great vowel shift happedn in english in the 1400s, i could imagine that many people speaking old english had a difficult time with it, so it is just as difficult to foregners of english to learn it, but it is ''pretty'' easy for a native english speaker to speak a different langauge related or totally... My biggest issue with English classes are that you have to write papers just for the sake of writing papers. If I have a reason for writing about something, it's not that big of a deal. But if I have to write some random paper, my mind comes to a screaching halt.

Nothing (to me) is more important than being understood; don't we all?  I'd also like to understanding someone else by reading what they think and feel. For now, however, I'd just be damn happy if people would show that they were taught how to use an apostrophe to show possession or contraction.

I'm German and I'd advocate a thorough instruction in the use of one's native language for every country.English as first foreign language was one of my favorite subjects from the start. No idea if my English is always correct, but I do more and more of my verbal thinking in it. Somehow my ideas come quicker and are better when I try to conceive them in English.

Definitely one of the hardest languages to learn for foreigners and even non-ones. It's taken me, a native speaker, my whole life just to mostly master the grammar rules and spelling. But it was definitely fun along the way. It is arguably the most useful language in the world, since most people in other countries will speak English to visitors who don't already speak the local language. Plus, it's great that one can change words around and even shorten sentences and still be understood. Another cool thing is the use of stress: "I went there" has a completely different meaning than "I went there."Despite its great qualities, English has downsides that vary from person to person. Firstly, grammar rules can be a nightmare. Secondly, spelling (especially on the internet) can be tough and those not willing to put in the effort to spell words correctly can frustrate others and possibly themselves.Ultimately, a very useful and beautiful language combining Latin, French and Greek. Very cool o... Read more

One of the most widely spoken languages in the world. I feel sorry for anyone that cannot speak, understand or even read English. It is by far one fo the hardest languages to learn and grasp. The spelling alone and how the words are prenounced can cause so much confusion.

Although it's gramatically simple in that it doesnt have conjugations of nouns and adjectives - like you get in German, Russian and Italian - pronunciation must be a pain the ar*e for learners becuase it's not phonetic. E.g the words 'cough', 'bough', 'slough'(as in to shed skin) and 'through' all contain 'ough' but are all pronounced ddifferently.

Whats up my peeps? Anyway I chose to rate "english" cause' I got an interesting bit of private mail from a fellow RIA member. Do you want to know who it is? Well ya out of luck cause I aint no snitch but I'll tell ya this. This dude was ripping on my english and saying nasty crap bout' me, but I didn't even trip cause' that fool couldnt spell for s*%t either so he's a hypocrite. I even was nice enough to tell him piece out(a term of endearment.) I simply popped my collar, and shaked the hater off my shoulders. Sometimes a pimp got to do what a pimp got to do ya feel me. Ya would think a guy with lots of friends on this site would be nicer to new reviewers, but he's just a hater ya mean? Im not even going to trip about it, Im cool with myself and thats all that matters fa sho.

I didn't mind how challenging it was until my senior year of high school. I always found English to be fairly easy, at times, even slightly boring. I love to write anything from: poetry, to short stories, to essays, and have even tried my hand at writing a novel. But come my senior year, things were starting to go south far to quickly in my life. I lost a friend to suicide, a friend left without word and I thought her abusive grandparents had finally gone over the deep-end (I was worried, constantly calling the cops to find out if they could find her for me), several other friends had moved over the summer which left me alone most of the time and so on. Add in the stresses of standardized tests that are required to graduate, classes that were far harder but required etc, and you've got a girl who can't stay focused for longer than 10 minutes, is highly emotional and having these mental-breaks during lectures, and is now prone to panic attacks. I almost failed my senior year because of ... Read more
