Eddie Shore

Among the greatest players in hockey history, Shore may be the closest hockey got to producing the equivalent of a Ty Cobb. Known for excessive violence in an era (the thirties) when hockey was particularly violent, Shore used his stick, his skates, his fists and anything else handy to get an edge on opponents. He ended the career of star player Ace Bailey, nearly killing him in the process, checking him viciously from behind and driving his head into the ice. He was suspended 16 games for the offense (almost half a season in those days) but was by no means a reformed man. He punched referees and linesmen, kicked opponents with his skates, and used his stick like a scapel on opponents faces. He fought with team-mates, putting a few of them in hospital in the process, and when he retired as a player he bought a minor league team and began to terrorize his players in even more refined ways.
