I read on Wikipedia that Eddie Murphy wouldn't drink coffee because he considered it to be a drug. Caffeine is a drug but not a bad drug. Not a bad drug at all. If coffee contained cocaine, I could understand Murphy not wanting any. But not caffeine. Anybody who refuses to drink caffeine drinks because they think it's a bad drug is weird.

Must rate as the best of the second group on SNL. Very funny during that era. Most of his later film work was pretty sad though. He should go back to doing his stand-up routines and get back in touch with reality.

I'll give him a 4 because he used to be funny and he paved the way for funnIER people to continue on carrying SNL.

Eddie Murphy is one of the most underrated actors of our time. He's totally gifted, hilarious and totally neglected b/c he does comedy. Coming to America is one of the funniest movies ever, there are so many jokes that are missed and it is so well written. His characters are a trip - gotta love the barber shop.

Five star all the way. You can't forget about Mr. Robinson or when he wants to see what being white is like. I also want to know who came up with him being Gumby.

There has been no one better since. He was the one reason the show survived during that time. Put his best sketches against any by Martin, Radner, Hartmann, etc,, and he wins hands down. The best natural performer ever on SNL.

Murphy's work hasn't impressed me much lately, but he was dynamite in most of his earlier films.

Hey look................A falling star ! So much potential here that went to watse when Eddie went nice. Got away from edgy comedy and now makes horrible movies. How does he continue to get work when every movie he does( like Sly Stallone) is a Bomb?

Eddie Murphy is still a strong actor. I still think that Beverly Hills Cop was his best movie. Same with the Nutty Professor movies. The most recent Daddy Day Care showed that he could be a box office hit again after a few flops. But most top actors have some flops too. Some lame movies like Showtime, Best Defense and some others just didn't work for Eddie. But movies like The Golden Child, Harlem Nights, 48 Hours, Boomerang and others showed his range and diversity. Eddie should look for better scripts so he can get back on top again.

He can be very funny and good in the comedic roles that are tailor made for him such as Beverly Hills Cop(which is his best movie) The Nutty Professor and Shrek. I would not say he is a great actor though.

Carried SNL through it's weakest period and deserves 4 stars for that alone. Genuinely funny as well - what a shame he still refuses to go back.

Eddie Murphy is a decent actor, but man! He picks some horrible roles sometimes!

In his prime, he was a legitimate candidate for the best comedian of all time. He can still deliver the goods, witness The Nutty Professor. I would strongly recommend Beverly Hills Cop, 48 Hours, and the all-time comedy classic Trading Places. Murphy was too good for Saturday Night Live, and proved it with his first batch of movies. I'd love to see him regain the consistency he once had.

I thought he was so awesome in the 80's, especially with movies like Beverly Hills Cop, Coming to America, 48 Hours, etc. He is an excellent comedian. However, he seems a bit washed up now and doesn't do near as good as he used too. But that comes with age I reckon. :)~~~

One of the funniest men of all times. Pluto Nash was a big mistake, but he has made up for it with Nutty Professor, and of course the voice of Donkey. One of the greatest cartoon characters ever made.

Velvet Jones, Kill My Landlord (his debut), his Jamaican reggae star ("kill all the white people...but buy my record 1st"), Mr. Rogers, James Brown celeb hot tub, Little Richard Simmons, BuckWheat, Gumby, Stevie Wonder, the angry Black Panther ("so I messed up - SHUT UP!") - he took Pryor to the next level. Anytime you see a black comic on TV, you're seeing a reheated, blander Murphy. In Living Color was influenced by him, as was Def Comedy Jam, Comic View, etc.. The most amazing run of success I've ever seen in comedy. I want to penalize him for not being a TRUE stand-up comic and for all the crap that came after, but I can't bring myself to do it!

When it comes to comedians, everyone has a favorite. For me, it was Eddie Murphy. From his "Delirious" to "Raw" and all his movies. This guy, just when he is himself, is the funniest guy alive. He made me laugh like no one else since.

Eddie Murphy is a brilliant comedian and a slightly above average actor. He's probably one of the better actor-comedians in Hollywood today. I enjoyed his earlier works more than his newer works (such as Beverly Hills Cop and 48 Hours). "Coming to America" was a pretty funny music which introduced Murphy's forte of playing multiple characters in his movies. I really enjoyed "Dr. Dolittle" and its sequel. However, Murphy's best work in my opinion was probably in "Trading Places". It really was Murphy's breakthrough role in Hollywood and gave promise to this man's post-SNL career. Who can deny that this man has a certain dedication to his acting that is rare in Hollywood today. "Shrek" and "The Nutty Professor" and its sequel are just a few more movies to add to this actor's impressive resume. I'm looking forward to more work from Eddie Murphy.

No one should forget that this was his crutch to superstardom throughout the 80s. Plus, his comedy was sheer genius. Mister Robinson, BuhWheet, and James Brown getting into the hot tub were superb skits. He came along just in time to prove that SNL could continue without the originals as they had moved on at the time.

Eddie Murphy, is not like the mainstream comedian, who has to scream and act idiotic to gain the audience attention. By his words and his actions you can tell he's just born funny, even though most of the movies he plaay in does not give him room to express his comedic skill.

Eddie Murphy is a good actor. He's done a number of funny movies. The immature yet still comical roles of "Nutty Professor" and "Doctor Doolittle" are respectable works. A funny guy.

Eddie Murphy is a real talent. He has been funny since Saturday night Live. He is versatile in what he can do. It was neat the way he played almost all of his relatives in the Nutty Professor. I only wish he would not go for the bathroom humor so much.and use so much foul language.

Eddie Murphy was the best actor on SNL from 1980-1982. His characters were so damn funny, and so was he. I loved him as Richard Simmonds, Stevie Wonder, Mr. Rogers, and remember Buckwheat? Oh-Tay!

a guy who, believe it or not, has yet to reach his full star potential. A comic genius who needs to concentrate on his strong points and stop trying to be what he's not.

I got to where I really hated him. I loved his early work and his SNL career. He needs to get back in the fold with the other SNL actors that always help each other out with movies. I did like NP2, and the Dr Dolittle 2 looks to be funny. Go back to SNL for a season, that would really do wonders for you career!
