Shouldn't this be "over"eating? I think I read somewhere that eating lends to quality of life.

Im 17, and I suffer from and eatin disorder, Bulemia and anorexia. Its by far the worst addition in my mind because the person is the problem. With all other addictions you can be removed from the surroundings, the drugs, the alcohol & pills. Eating disorders are one of the most deadly addictions because you cant just "quit" food. Theres a chemical released into the blood stream after a person purges. Think of it as when your sick and you throw up.. the body takes that as rejecting a poison, and immediately calms itself. This feeling is then seemingly needed whenever a situation becomes too stressfull or anxious and quickly takes over as a coping device. It also rearanges the chemical balances in the brain triggering the distorted images, almost non existant self esteem, and views as fat. Ive been through scary things with this problem and every day it consumes my mind. I wish i had another addiction instead of this one. I would trade my life, and im surprised this isnt rated worst.

I very much agree this is a very bad addiction. Especially anorexia. As I have said before, it isn't only women..."man-orexia" is also on the rise. Everytime I go to the mall I see all these guys that barely look over 100 lbs and they just look horrible. I don't know what the cure is...if there is one. Obviously one should go to counseling and or a psychiatrist and treatment...

Americans in general are getting fatter and fatter as the years go by. Our kids are sitting in front of televisions and computers snacking on crap and don't participate in outdoor activities(sports)nearly as much as they should. Diseases will be on the increase as they grow older (ie cancer, heart disease, diabetes, etc). Sad state of affairs indeed!!

There's theory that suggests the effects of chocolate can mimic the effects of cocaine, effecting the same receptors in the brain, producing the same effects, etc. Though I'm sure it's on a lesser scale, I think there's some reason to believe that food addiction stems from more than a lack of self-control. Another example is milk. After lying in bed the other night for an hour and a half, I decide to drink some milk to help me fall asleep. It works. Sure you can write it off as the placebo effect (though this actual effect has not held true in research studies). I bet milk effects serotonin, and feelings of well-being and satiety. It would make sense as to why we feed it to our new people. And all of those studies of dairy promoting weight loss? I'm telling you..they're going to find out that the psychological effects of the substance play a role. So, sure food isn't as strong a drug as some others. But I have reason to believe it is. And when you're dealing with pain at a ... Read more

Eating far too much is a bad thing because of the fact it looks disgusting but putting on excess weight is bad for you, plus it drains them emotionally because believe it or not, they don't actually want to be the way they are. But I don't consider this to be as bad because usually people have enough self control that when they feel full, they stop eating or they know when and when not to eat. People who have eating disorders often have low self-esteem. In fact some psychologists believe that actually, the person is eating to fulfil an emotional desire. They may want to feel fulfilled, or they want to feel secure and eating makes them feel secure. But what makes this addiction less then drug or alcohol is the fact that the person who has the addiction is not a threat to anyone where as people on drugs or alcohol addictions can become violent. Plus it isn't a chemical addiction because people get addicted to alcohol or drugs due to the chemicals in them. But being addicted to foo... Read more

A lot of neurotics become compulsive eaters, sometimes going down the road to bulimia and anorexia. Nasty stuff.

I have to admit, this is my weakness. I love food. I love to cook it, I love to eat it. Hell, I just love looking at it. It'll probably be my downfall, reluctantly, I'm trying to learn to eat a little healthier, just a little.

I used to be sympathetic towards fat people. I thought they were just born that way and there was not too much they could do about it. But all these new gastrointestinal surgeries, where they cut out most of the stomach preventing them from pigging out, has changed my mind. Once their stomach has been hacked out, they are forced to reduce their caloric intake, thereby causing the body to use up all that stored-up fat, and they lose weight. This whole process shows beyond a shadow of a doubt, it was the amount they ate that caused to them to blow up like fatted cows. They had no self control and they caused their own problem. Cutting out their stomach is taking the coward's way out. Why don't you eat as little now as what you would be forced to eat after the surgery and save the money for something productive? It's the caloric INTAKE that cause you people to become so fat. I am tired of seeing stories on talk shows about obese people rolling out of bed to eat a dozen eggs, a loaf of bre... Read more

Eating disorders do a lot of damage to people. It must be awful to be addicted to puking. It loses points in my mind strictly because of its pathetic, worthless, hedonistic, comercially generated nature. That having been said, why is Glue not on this list?? Do you know how bad of an addiction that is? People do it in Honduras and Romania because it helps them not feel the horrible pains of starvation. It eats away their brain and they die quickly. Glue sucks a lot worse than bulimia, any day.

Eating is ok, but only in moderation. Obesity and other eating problems is considered one of the leading deaths in North America.

I think tboneya hit the nail on the head the tempation is always there. It would be like someone trying to break an alcohol habit actually having to drink smaller amounts of alcohol. You really can't escape food entirely and it seems like just as you get committed to change your bad habits, someone comes along and shoves a piece of cake under your nose. I would also add this to LadyShark4534's comments - too much fat on your body can also lead to certain cancers. Aside from that there's low self-esteem, self-hatred, problems with joints, and on and on...

With such a high emphasis our society places on personal appearance, this will more than likely damage your romantic life and career. In addition movie theater and plane seats will become increasingly uncomfortable.
