Maybe not so groundbreaking in what they did...but still one of the very finest rock and roll bands America has ever produced. Legendary and exceptionally talented; their one mistake (IMO) was kicking out Randy Meisner, who I believe was the soul of the band...

An amazingly talented group of musical artists, whose place in rock history remains hugely overrated to this day. Only misstep was cutting Randy Meisner loose--he was the soul of the band.

This was one of the first concerts I went to as a child and still to this day the Eagles are one of my favorites!

yea i think i know a couple

I know a lot of fans consider them a classic band, but I always found their music predictable and boring.

Most talented rock band in history, particularly in song writing. Very versatile in the sense that each member could perform solo.

Doesn't get much better as far as classic rock goes. I love the live versions of 'Seven Bridges Road' and 'Hotel California.'

They good and bad

I've never been a big fan. They're kinda cheesy.

The are pretty unique and they sing with such strong American accents.  They could come from nowhere else and maybe that is one reason why so many Americans like them.  But not only Americans like them, I like them too!  They are kind of special.

One of the great mysteries of life is how come 30 million Americans bought 'Greatest Hits'. The thing is, they're reasoanbly tuneful and capable musicians but they've done nothing groundbreaking or exceptional . I guess they appeal to Middle America. They're not too rocky that they'd outrage christian sensibilities  - like Motley Crue etc -and they occasionally throw up a decent guitar riff that appeals to guitar nerds. They're OK.

Seeing them Live in Concert and on DVD was great-love Witchy Woman, Desperado, and so many others.

Without a doubt, one of the best bands ever. Their music can be as fun as it is inspirational.

The music of The Eagles depict the beautiful and bitter things in life, in the simplest yet intelligent, most elegant yet credible and affectionate way!

( Tongue in cheek, sorta) I have been thinking: what is the best way to garner a truckload of unhelpfuls and see your trusted list wither away in record time? The best way I could come up with is give a negative review to The Eagles, surely a sacred cow to, at a guess, about 80% of reviewers. Inspired in a way by a hilarious scene in "The Big Lebowski," I have decided to throw a 1 at this band. Ok, so they're not as bad as say Loverboy or The New Kids On The Block, and they might have a couple of tolerable tunes but if you want to see white people over 30 go on a rampage like an army of the undead, or head for you with torches and pitchforks like you're Frankenstein, crack any Eagles cd into smithereens with a sledgehammer in the downtown section of your community. And then run for your life...

To appreciate the contribution to music the Eagles gave, just listen to the entire album of, On the Border, my favorite all time album from anyone. From the first song to the last tells a continual story, a saga. It's magnificent and no other group to my knowledge has ever done that. I rank the Eagles as being "inspired" songwritters and musicians. You just don't get this talent by luck. They were destined to be who they are.

Their better known songs are great but the rest of the tracks on any of their albums are fillers.

Among my favorites ever. They are so unpretentious - they just play for the love of it. (Which is probably why they can't stop doing farewell tours.) My kids grew up with me listening to their music and know every word. My favorite songs are "Lying Eyes" and "Love Will Keep Us Alive."

One of the best bands ever. This is the only band that I would shell out my hard earned money to see in concert. The vocal harmonies are great and the guitar work of Felder and Walsh are unmatched.

Simply the greatest!! Went to their live show in Birmingham (UK)a few years ago - FABULOUS. Just looking now to see when they will be appearing again in the UK - to hopefully book for the show

Great tunesmiths who produced a singular body of work that stayed the course of their original vision. They had the good sense to refrain from jumping on some of the less timeless musical trends that defined their decade and for that reason, their music has lived for longer than most mega-successful pop acts. I'd rate them shy of "Great" because they weren't ahead of their time nor did they invent the sound that they made famous, they were just the most successful of their class.

THey're alright

I just started getting into the Eagles lately, and I am impressed with their song writing capacity, not just the original music mix of rock pop and country, but the lyrics. They are like short stories that put me in another place. These guys are very talented, and I like the country side of them. Not all are country but I like it that other styles of music influenced their sound. I especially love the emotion of Take It To The Limit, it's full of feeling.

Good solid band with well written songs. They are one of the bands responsible for my interest in country music. (Old or alt-country, not the new commercial garbage!)

This is one of those all-american bands such as aerosmith and lynyrd skynyrd that deserves a lot of credit for their skills,originality and lyrics.

I have always liked the Eagles mix of pop country style. they have preformed some great songs.They were a unique group when they appeared in the late 70s{?} with their sylle of music.

a few good stoner tunes in the 1970's but nothing to really write home about. they were harmless and i guess that's the Eagles charm. rock and roll for people who would ordinarily sit at home w/a John Denver album. were the mainstream embassadors of Country Rock(a genre Monkee Mike Nesmith helped develop)but lacked the power and beauty that a lot of the lesser known(at the time) acts like Graham Parsons were doing. now the Eagles sort of exist to play tongue-in-cheek farewell shows, bilking baby boomers out of hundreds of dollars.

Arguably one of the best sounding bands ever put together. I have seen them twice and they are awsome live. It is like you are in the studio. Great songs great musicians make one of the best bands. Don't know how they are going to make it with out Don Felder, he is great.

The scourge of the 70's. Boring, pretentious pap that, of course, was constantly played on the radio every time you turned around. Music to commit suicide by.

Beautiful music, every note crafted and played to perfection, awsome lyrics. They feel their music, and Timothy B. Schmit is absolutely great.I hope Don Felder is with them again some day-he is a GREAT part of The Eagles.

take it easy

It is hard to be fair when rating the Eagles. What once seemed like great music now just makes me groan inwardly. Maybe this is because the music has been overplayed and co-opted for use in so many commercials. For me, this music is more tired than a college student during exam week.

Most pleasing to hear, even better to sing and play, the harmony of vocals with a beautifully composed and smooth flow of music never ceases to amaze me. Take it easy....

Though the Eagles may not have invented the Southern California music style of the 1970's, the band (along with the Buckingham/Nicks version of Fleetwood Mac) certainly perfected it and made the genre almost preeminent throughout that decade when disco, punk, and new wave were not otherwise on the airwaves. As noted in at least one other comment, the Eagles started out as Linda Ronstadt's backup band, were quickyly signed as a separate act, and released a string of six mostly good (but at least one great) full-length efforts from 1972 to 1979. The band's sound was easy, the lyrics were non-challanging (for the most part), and the vocals were built on harmonization. In sum, the band's mass and continued popularity rested on not taking too many challanges or attempting to break any new ground. Milquetoast, plastic, putrid and pathetic. Oh yeah, Don Henley's whiny ass voice grates on my nerves.

Right at this time I am Standing on a corner in Winslow Arizona. Our town has a park right in the middle on the downtown area that is solely dedicated to the Eagles and their song "Take It Easy". This song has made our town famous. People from alll over the world visit the park and they purchase an engraved brick that is set in the park and will live for ever. This is the musical equivalent of formica: bland, enduring, all surface. The only decent thing about this band was Joe Walsh, who had great talent, but limited artistic judgment. "Lyin' Eyes" is one of the most barfsome songs ever written, and "Hotel California" gives me gas. Really plastic and colorless Top 40 drivel. This is an act that should have been deconstructed and left that way.

I love the Eagles. slightly before my time. One of these Nights is the classic make-out song, smooth vocals, awesome bass guitar, it has that cruisin on a warm summer night on the open road, 70's Southern Calif feel to it. It's depressing to see music like this no longer being made.

I just saw them in concert, they are awesome! I love all of their songs, and they will always be one of America's greatest bands in my eyes.

The Eagles are talented. They make pretty unique music. Some of their songs are amazing. I mean Hotel California has got to be in the Top 10 Rock Songs of all time.

The Eagles have produced a lot of my favorite songs, including "Hotel California", "Take It Easy", "Life in the Fast Lane", "Take it to the Limit", "Lyin' Eyes" and "One of These Nights". They were all awesome songs from an awesome band.

Arguably one of the top five American bands of all time. Clever, thoughful concise lyrics, smooth and tightly integrated melodies, solid beats, delivered crisply. Everything a real music lover wants. Granted not everybody can sit on their back porch watching the sun set over the desert, sipping a frosty beer and burning a colita !

Made some of the best records of their times and really helped to define a sound.

First of all, all of you punks out there don't understand what music would be right now without the music from the past. In fact, all bands were inspired by bands from the past like the eagles. Not just that, but they are great! You shouldn't have anything negative to say about the eagles.
