To be a great instrumental, the single must not only be a great song, but it must also be instantly recognizable to people of several generations. Dueling Banjos easily meets this requirement in spades, usually after just the first few notes. The song is not only the sole bluegrass entry, but it also conjures up an image, a feel if you will. When one wishes to paint a picture of extreme rural America (for good or ill), one need only play, hum or vocal twang the first few notes of this song. The fact that the bluegrass Dueling Banjos spent a total of 11 weeks on the U.S. charts in 1973 (4 of those at #2) is a testament to the strength of this song.

If there are any all instrumentals radio stations, this should most definitely be included in their playlists. Even non-country fans should appreciate this marvelous, artistic tune.
