I've done it; not recently, and hopefully never again, but it's happened. MADD didn't really get off the ground, in NJ anyway, until approximately 1983, and in the years before that, drinking and driving never seemed to be considered a big deal. Most times, if a cop caught you with the smell of booze on you, or even with an open bottle of beer, he'd ascertain that you were capable of getting home, and tell you to get there without delay. I remember once driving with 4 or 5 guys in my car from Rutgers on the highway back to our home town, a distance of several miles. We were drinking, and smoking pot (and it wasn't even noon yet!). A cop noticed us at some point outside New Brunswick and followed behind us for miles. Me, driving, immediately told everyone, my panic barely under control, "Stash everything. Stick it under the seats. A cop's following us." "What good will that do?" one of my companions asked. "How many 6-packs do you think we can stash under your seats?" "I don't care; jus... Read more

If you are alotted a  limited amount of luck in your lifetime, I foolishly wasted a lot of it by doing this in my youth.  I think that there has been a very effective public effort in educationg people about the dangers DUI.  I have a lot of friends whose kids are not at all afraid to call their parents for a ride home now.

You should never drink and drive, but when you do, don't try to concentrate on staying between the lines.  You'll just wind up weaving.  Pick one line and stick with it.

Can't say that I never will, but I have never, ever driven drunk. I used to travel in an acting troupe that staged plays about the various ways that one person with a drinking problem affects the lives of others. I would support the most severe laws for drunk drivers.

Only idiots drive while hammered.  I've never done this and I never will.

I've done this as a teenager, it wasn't right and thankfully no one was hurt.  I'd never do this now.. too many innocent people are hurt and more often than not it's the drunk who walks away unscathed.

When I was young I did this more times than I care to remember.  I was foolish. I have driven so drunk, so many times it's a wonder I didn't kill myself or worse, someone else.  The laws have changed quite a bit in the last twenty years, thanks in a large part to MADD. Even if someone is not concerned about the safety of others or themselves, the legal ramifications alone are enough to make someone swear off drinking and driving. Or at least you would think so. Still a lot of idiots out there.

I regret to say I have done this, many years ago. I wouldn't repeat it.

I have done this before, and like Irish, I deeply regret it. I am lucky I did not hurt myself or others. I will never do this again.

I work in the emergency room. Let me just say please don't do it. The consequences far outweigh any type of rush or fun many feel when this is done. It's easy...call a friend, take a cab or bus...or a nice brisk safe walk.
