Dream Theater is unfairly criticized for being progressive metal. Their best releases have a lot of punch, even if they do lose purpose occassionally.

An amazing band with amazing talent. They are very poetic and can express any emotion they want without even saying a word. Generally you know exactly what the song is about before JLB even says a word. They are very amazing and write songs about close to everything. There musicians are top notch to say the least, there singer is brilliant and one of my favorite and there themes and ideas are quite honestly just mind blowing. There riffs and songs are mind blowingly birlliant.

ok. I Would like to open by saying not everyone should like dream theater. But everyone should respect them. I am sick of people saying they suck and stuff. They are really really good. Just because you dont like progressive rock does not mean you have to bash their talents. Give them a low rating cuz you dont like the music but not because of lack of talent. I am sick of peoples ignorant statements on both sides. Some people dont like this music. But on the other hand you cant dis-respect it. I would give a five because of the emotion in the music. Yes they are very technecal, but when you listen to songs like hollow years and silent man and innocence faded and more, you will see the soul behind dream theater. And they have songs that down right rock. My girlfriend listens to emo music and she found a couple of songs she actually likes. I have a friend that hates progressive rock and loves korn and slipknot, and he liked a couple songs. They are so diverse but yet they stick to a ... Read more

Dream Theater are an amazingly talented band (particularly Mr Petrucci), and their metal/prog tie-in works very well. Some of their cover work is extraordinary (for example Rush covers 'YYZ' and '2112', as well as 'Master of Puppets', amongst hundreds of others). I think it's most fitting they covered an Elton John song... N.B. Let me assure you their cover of 'Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding' is actually amazing. I never thought I'd say that...

I was flipping past the music channels on the TV about two weeks ago and saw some recent prerecorded concert footage of Dream Theater playing somewhere and I thought that it was extremely boring. I forced myself to sit through about 10 minutes of it with the idea of trying to be objective because so many people I know seem to rave about how great they are. I tried to understand for the life of me why. I think they totally SUCK ASS and THEY DO NOT ROCK! They come across to me as yet another godawful,  pseudo-intellectual, nose in the air prog-rock band. Here we go again with mega-instrumental arrangements, silly and excessive electronic keyboards attempting to awe you,  high pitched operatic singing ( always a loser in this genre), all over the place musical texturing ( as if trying to pretentiously impress the technical musicianship crowd) and ridiculous "high concept" songwriting and arranging that is ultimately so cleaned up, musically polished and sanitized that it sounds like one b... I recently got the 'Live at Budokan' CD and DVD and after playing them have revised my 4 stars to 5. F**k me!! Has there ever been a band who who can play that well? I doubt it very much. At best some bands have one or two talented musicians while the rest are workmanlike. Most are just of average ability. Not only are DT superlative musicians but live the songs work so much better than on the studio albums, although 'Train of thought' is the best metal album since 'Master of puppets' IMO. Most surprising is I'd never thought I'd ever like a band who did prog having been exposed to the dreary excesses of 70s Brit outfits like ELP and Yes. I've had to revise my rating down 1 as I've recently listened to Scenes from a memory and side 2 of Six degrees of inner turbulence. Sorry lads, but concept albums are a no-no.

For all your Dream Theater haters, Go To Hell! I'm dead serious, you people are all useless, talentless, pieces of $#!# that can't write or play an instrument, so again, go to hell, please? As for Dream Theater, I luff your music, and hopefully I get to tour with you guys with my prog band, or even shake hands with you, keep up the amazing work!!!!

Amazing band, amazing musicians. To those who give them bad ratings, I feel sorry for your lack of taste. They're music is brilliant, and say what you want about LaBrie, but I think he's friggin' amazing. I'd love to hear any of you try to sing like him, but I'd love more to see you begin to get the slightest idea of what talent is. Anyways, this band is without a doubt the best prog rock/metal band out there, hands down.

Dream Theater is better than every abnd on this list. What are they doing at the bottom? Every member is amazingly proficient at their intruments and their sound has reached horizons that no one has ventured to or have expanded upon since. If you think they're gay or cheesy or ugly, then that's your opinion, but none has to do with their musical talent whatsoever.

ah, yes... Dream Theater... not the typical band you'll want to play as a background... to really appreciate their sound, one must learn to play it, or at least learn the theory behind it. DT's not the band you're bound to like when you first hear them, especially non-musicians, they're so complicated... only when you realize and begin to understand the process of building musical structures and phrasing will you truly appreciate how thoughtful and masterful Dream Theater's music is. Not recommended for people who leave their music on the background, not getting the "mental picture". And I only gave 4 stars cuz the vocalist ruins the sound, he's got a good voice, but it doesn't fit in the musical aura. Liquid Tension Experiment (the pure instrumental DT) would get a 5...

DT are amazing....................... ly gay... That said, they are fantastic musicians, and so, despite being horrendously homosexual and having an obese talentless manatee for a vocalist (who actually has BRIE in his name LOL) i give 'em a 3.

So, they are masterful musicians..so what? Praps they should've joined the New York Philharmonic or whatever. The original idea behind rock n' roll was to have a blast, not become serious musos who've done their time at Berklee or wherever. The bottom line is their music is self-indulgent and dull.

These are the most amazing group of guys to hit rock music ever! Every part of this band is centuries ahead of the rest. Jordan Rudess is a keyboard god, and Labrie has the most amazing voice for rock music ever!

These guys are in a class by themselves, but is heavy metal the place to put them? There should be a Dream Theater genre! Nobody comes close to the music they produce...nobody! If you like them, also check out Liquid Tension Experiment.

Dream Theater rocks! A five piece orchestra, truly. My coworkers cannot understand a song that goes past five minutes, but they have no clue what these boys have accomplished. Pull me under, please! I want to drown in musical bliss! Even my mom can stomach this!

Nothing to say except nearly every song floors me with its musicianship and composition. And to those who say Dream Theater is devoid of any feeling, you clearly haven't given them much of a listen.

Dream Theater are a band of amazing musicians with diverse and imaginative musical interests. Their compositional skills are extraodrinary in modern rock, as they are greatly influenced by jazz and classic progressive bands, and their technical abilities are truly extraordinary. John Petrucci is an honest and thoughtful lyricist, and his technique, musical taste and knowledge of theory make for some of the most incredibly structured, flowing solos. For him alone, I would give Dream Theater five stars. James, the singer, is lauded by some for his soft, high vocals, and his inconsistent live performances. I do feel his singing often fits the music well, and recently I think he's been warming up more before shows as his range and strength in the last year far exceeds the output of his past performances. The rest of the band are masterful on their instruments, and contribute unique stylistic quirks that define Dream Theater's complex and passionate epics.

For those that like their music to think about, not just listen to. Dream Theater is a group that I'm sure casual music listeners cannot appreciate. The musicianship in this band is unbelievable. "Voices" from "Awake" is an unreal song and the entire "Scenes From A Memory" CD is phenomenal. For those who like music for the music, give it a listen. For those that just have music playing in the background, play U2.

Took me a few songs to get into them, but when I did I got sucked up in a TON of great and inspiring music. Each musician in this band is VERY talented, John Petrucci has even inspired me to learn the guitar!

blasphemy! dream theater deserve more than that. just the fact that unlike pretty much every band that exist today (slipknot, static x, kittie, marilyn manson, papa roach, puddle of mudd, POD, linkin park, limp bizkit, korn, creed, rammstein, offspring, blink 182, just to name a few) they actually use guitar and music theory in a way that makes justice to it. and i mean, it's not like instrumental theory is the sole key for good music, i'm a big marilyn manson and rammstein fan, 2 bands that i listed along with the nu metal crap if you noticed, but complex sound has a certain effect that today's bands can't match. i also find them to be extriemly artistic. the music draws inspiration from a huge amount of sources, and the instrumenal tracks, aswell as the interludes and the music in general takes alot of twists and turns, and changes drasticly all the time, it's almost impressionistic in certain parts, and that's great, the sound itself is extriemly varieted and complicated.. they defi...
