A huge disappointment of a fight considering the pre-hype build up (most notably a SI cover story which labeled this bout "the fight to save boxing", and HBO's introduction of its 24/7 documterary series which followed the two fighters) for this fight. Floyd was on the defensive all night (but its my understanding he might have been fighting with a hand injury) while the only way for Oscar De La Hoya to win was to land his jab, which he was doing, but for what ever reason stopped jabbing after the 8th round and  seemed to just go throught the motions for the rest of the fight. A rematch was scheduled for September 2008 and would have been great to see and looks very unlikely it will happen as Floyd announced his retirmement on Friday, June 6 and Oscar looked to be well past his prime as he was decimated in December 2008 when he was throughly pummeled and humiliated by Manny Pacqaio. However the possiblity of a Pacauaio vs Mayweather may seem likely and would be a very exciting match up... Read more

Very Crappy fight from 2 good fighters. It seemed as Mayweather was afraid to engage because he was running throughout the whole fight and De La Hoya just couldnt deliver. Maybe he will have better luck picking on smaller fighters.

I watched the fight and was disappointed. Mayweather was boring to watch and much hyped up. I think the judges must have scored him every time he hit Oscars gloves. I think when Hatton meets up with Floyd, he'll tear him apart. God bless you, Jesus is LORD

I agree totally with Randyman, the Floyd Mayweather vs. Oscar De La Hoya bout was a reasonably good fight, but not great. It seemed that Mayweather was intent on being defensive and having the fight brought to him instead of being the assertive fighter he often is. De La Hoya, on the other hand, seemed to fall into the trap as he had few good moments, landing punches just to land them- and underutilizing his jab. I feel a younger De La Hoya (the 1997-99 version) would have beaten Mayweather. But at the end of the night, the right fighter won- but it was anything but spectacular.

This was a reasonably good, but not great fight. As a fan of Oscar De La Hoya I wanted him to win, as a true lover of boxing I have to admit he did not. It’s not that he did not try, he did, especially when he chose to use his jab., but it takes two to tango, and Floyd Mayweather was content to play it safe and never really attempted to make a statement in this fight, as he promised he would. To his credit Oscar did the best he could, it just was not enough, maybe a few years ago it might have been another story, but on this night as the fight wore on it became painfully obvious to me that Oscar was aging.. He made the fight closer than most believed he would, and like most fighters in a reasonably close fight, he felt he won. He did not. He wasn’t griping he was just answering the questions. He was gracious in defeat, just as he was when he was the winner. Which brings me to my main point. Oscar has been a class act and credit to the sport of Boxing. It will be a while before we see...
