Generally well hated

Once sent a dead rat to a sportswriter.  That was probably a good day for him.

Surly, uncommunicative, mean-spirited prick who hit hundreds of home runs while striking out about 11 million times. Played first base and the outfield like there were landmines around his position, and generally treated everyone with the same kindly courtesy that a Hell's Angel treats someone who spilled his beer.

Always struck me as the kind of guy who wanted to be stupid and ignorant.
