Sat Nov 05 2011It's hard to believe that it was over 2 decades ago that Kevin Costner was the king of Hollywood. The film was made at the peak of his power and influence in the movie business and he could walk any idea into a studio head's office and get it green lighted. He did far worse during that era than this film. The film was hampered by Costner's typical wooden acting - he plays the same corn-fed Midwestern guy whether he's Robin Hood, a Louisiana lawyer or a baseball player. The story is laboured and lacks any sense of subtlety or restraint. But it survives twenty + years later as good old style Hollywood epic. If you look at any of Gary Cooper's best films you'd probably be able to level the criticisms. But it stands up as a well produced and loving tribute to the time and place and captures the wild unspoiled plains in a way that few films have done with such reverence. I guess it took a corn-fed Midwestern guy to do that.

Fri Jun 10 2011This was a loooooooong oater about the noble Redskin, a Bambi view of animals in nature, the terrible U. S. Army on the plains and just about every other lefto slogan and belief that you can find. ZZZZzzzz.

Wed Nov 11 2009From what I saw it was pretty boring and the acting was forced (especially the female lead). Saw it originally in the theater and fell asleep during the middle. First and only time thats ever happened to me.

Sat Jun 06 2009i love this film shots of buffalo hunts indians as actual people and not just a bunch of screaming savages the only flaws for me are all the sioux are good guys and the pawnees are bad and as for the u s army talk about inhuman savages a bit of an unfair portrayal of the frontier soldiers of the time but hey the indians look great especially the wes studi led pawnee war party i just wish there were more films like this made.

Wed Mar 25 2009Begging reviewer Tom Keogh's pardon, but there is NO overstatement in either this film's "portrait of white intruders as morons" or its very graphic portrayal of mindless and immoral brutality by solders, which characterizations remain relevant to an all too common type of mindset and behavior that tragically continues in our country's administrative agencies of government to this very day. And, this film most assuredly IS, indeed, an "UNQUALIFIED MASTERPIECE". In my opinion, it probably ranks as one of the five most important American films ever made.

Sat Feb 14 2009wanted an update from seller when item didn't arrive at a reasonable time and he, once, gave me a lame excuse and later, dismissed my inquiry. Item didn't arrive and I requested a refund, but was completely ignored.

Fri Feb 06 2009This is movie is awesome! I loved it very much! John Dunbar was a good, and honorable soldier, with remarkable courage, who becomes weary, and ready for the Civil War to end! After a battle, John is now considered a hero, and he gets to choose the location of his next army post! John chooses to go West, and start over: and there he meets Sioux Indians, and then meets a wolf, whom John names Two Socks. John and the Sioux Indians become friends, and earn each others respect! John falls in love with a white Sioux woman that lives with these Sioux Indians! And learns first hand how wonderful, and how special and remarkable these Sioux Native American's really are! In this movie, these Sioux Native Americans show that they are special people, that also, have a unique, heartfelt feeling and respect for the land, and for the animals, and for nature, and for each other! I highly recommend this movie, I loved the breathtaking, beautiful, outdoor scenes! I also highly recommend the... Read more

Thu Feb 15 2007Hands-down one of the best movies, in my opinion, that has ever been attempted. When it came out in 1990 the concept of the movie was fresh and original and I still haven't seen a movie nearly as good (similar to the same concept) since. Kevin Costner gets a "free-leave" from his garrison during Civil War and heads out west. He encounters an abandoned military fort/post and decides to stay there, even though it's desserted. Within a few days, by chance, some Sioux men encounter him...and little by little, during a period of some weeks, they begin a relationship of friendship: Costner slowly learns their language, he begins living with them and adopting their ways, and within a short period of time he looks and acts the part of a member of the Dakota tribe. Instead of rushing into things, the movie -in every facet- is extremely believable and realistic and slowly but surely it takes its time to show Costner's transformation from an ex-soldier of the Civil War to a full-fledged Siou... Fri Aug 18 2006My favorite movie all-time. This is the one movie I try to ignore any and all political overtones. Superb acting with a wonderful cast, beautiful scenery, a top notch soundtrack and when you combine action, romance, comedy and drama you have a film well deserving of each and everyone of the accolades and awards it received. Costner's acting and directing were brilliant.

Tue Nov 16 2004Over-rated garbage. Guilty White Liberal idea of how the Noble Savage was destoyed by the White Man. See Black Robe for a more realistic view of Indian/White interaction.

Sat Nov 16 2002I wish this movie would have been hours longer. The story was compelling as was the love between them. I think that in our American history books we glorify people and gloss over reality in exchange for heroes. This movie showed what I believe was a much more accurate description of the average soldier, ignorant and narrow-minded. This movie was a masterpiece!

Mon May 13 2002Well, Kevin Costner, you proved you're not that bad after this amazing epic. It pulls you in, it's beautiful, it's also powerful, although too sterotyped. In fact, VERY stereotyped. That aside, also Costner giving himself half a dozen scenes without a shirt, this long film is worthy watching. Unfairly sweeping the Oscars in 1990, robbing GoodFellas of Best Picture and Director, not to mention others it should've won, Dances With Wolves is still a beautiful, sweeping epic, despite its patriotical hokum. Too bad Costner's performance is so terrible, as usual. Summary: A BEAUTIFUL, SWEEPING, YET STEREOTYPED EPIC WESTERN.

Fri Jan 25 2002a truly unremarkably film,,,,but remarkable in its ability to trick people. brimming with unrealistic sentimental nonsense designed to tug on your little heart strings. which disguise the long boring plot and horrible acting of kevin costner. second to water world as the worst KC movie. and second only to titanic as the worst academy award movie in history.

Sun Jan 21 2001Made me feel very sad for our Native Americans... they were truly wronged by America!

Thu Jan 11 2001I liked this movie because it showed American Indians as wonderful people, not savages. It showed how the American settlers took advantage of the poor Indians. Kevin Costner looked pretty hot in the movie.

Tue Jan 09 2001This is a classic Kevin Costner movie. Since I think that he is a great actor it was a great movie. The movie's soundtrack was spectacular. I have played in an orchestra for eight years and so the level of complexity in the songs were amazing. As stated earlier, if you are a Costner fan you will appreciate this movie.

Sat Dec 16 2000It's great because it shows how a man can change into something unexpected. He also gets the chick.

Fri Dec 15 2000This was a beautifully filmed movie. It presented a part of history rarely shown in film, which was great. The rich colors and landscape added so much to the film and how it was received. This film captures the essence of that time period.

Wed Dec 13 2000Good movie and plot. The relationship bond with the wolf and man was shown. The torture of the American people was only secondarily noted, but should have been more prominent.

Mon Dec 11 2000The drama movie Dances with Wolves was a very well directed movie. The story incorporated true history as well as fiction beautifully without making it boring. The story was heart-wrenching and the actors played their roles brilliantly.

Mon Nov 06 2000Great epic. Sad, melancholic, honest on the cruelty and stupidity of the American soldiers, the BS of war, non compassion. Good prevails.

Tue Dec 07 1999A classic among American classics! This frontier story was a masterful portrayal of frontier drama and emotion. One of Costner's best.
