In this world of confusion and violence, Dalai Lama is the only leader who encourages his followers to be non-violent and talks of universal brotherhood and peace. I bet my bottom dollar that once he dies will then people realise what an extra ordinary man he was and talk about how greatly he'll be missed in this world filled with hatred and violence.

Strange but true: The only political party operating in the Tibetan-Government-In-Exile is the left-libertarian National Democratic Party. Finally, true socialism that's close to being Chinese...lol This guy's cool tool

I feel sorry for the Tibetans, but why doesn't the DL go back to aid his people? Is he too comfortable living his present life?

Anyone who rated him less than a four is an idiot. 'False prophet'? 'The only man alive who could be a worse alternative than being ruled by Chinese Communist'? Guess what morons, just because he's the leader of a religion that ISN'T smothered in hypocrisies does not mean he is terrible or bad or whatnot. That is all.

To lead by simple example is the best way. Has he made any great accomplishments? No. Has he commited any atrocities? No. The middle path might be best.

I respect him, definitely, but he does not belong in the category of world leader and he has not been as influential over the course of world events as quite a few others listed below him on this list. Review this list and tell me if he has influenced the course of world history as, say, Truman, Gorbachev, and reagan. He hasn't. His influence is limited.

Once again, there is a certain someone on this site who amazes me with his/her lack of knowledge of anything. If you read into the history of Tibet and the leadership of the Dalai lama you would see that he speaks for his people and emulates the kind of peace and tolerance that is all too rare these days. Just because Tibet has a religious leader does not make it wrong, and if you learn about the Dalai lama's philosophy, you would be amazed. The fact that he has remained commited to peace in the face of such violence is a testament to this man's great character. Knock him if you want, but what a world we would live in if we all tried a little tolerance and compassion like the Dalai Lama.

The Dalai Lama is to be admired for his courageous resistance to Chinese Communist attempts to annex his country, kill him, and destroy Tibetan culture and religion.

Anyone, anywhere, who associates religion with a political cause (and therefore makes their cause above debate and, by definition, Right) is dangerous. Civilization depends on the right and responsibility of us all to think for ourselves. The intrusion of religious leaders into politics - in any way other than by expressing personal opinions rather than issuing directives to the faithful - is unacceptable to all democratic people.

For the benefit of all sentient beings... Om Mane Padme Hum His Holiness would never say he is more qualified than the others on this list, as his heros include Gandhi, King and Mandela. My personal belief in his ongoing efforts at peace for over 40 years while truly generating a love for his oppressors is unmatched in this century.

I knew very little about the Dalai Lama until I read one of his books a few months ago. I was very impressed with him not only as a religious leader but also as a scholar and a person.

Somehow the Dalai Lama is able to appear simultaneously as a revered holy leader and a simple, humble man. His leadership in the face of an intolerable situation is inspiring, and I feel a great deal of sympathy for the tragic situation in Tibet.
