The Vega's bad reputation comes mainly from its aluminum block. It would have been a better car if it had a cast-iron block. The easiest fix: throw a V-8 in it and go.

The Vega has an aluminum engine that would warp from heat and bleed oil  into the spark plug ports.  The plugs would foul, the car would stall and the driver would become a pedestrian.

Our family had one of these for a very, very short while. It was small, noisy and unreliable. I actually completely forgot about it until I saw the movie "Contact". While a complete lemon, at least it didn't blow up when rear ended.

This car, and its equally evil twin the Pontiac Astre (one of which, to my undying shame, I owned), was a testament to lousey design, shoddy assembly, and overall poor performance. When I picked the car up from the dealership, I thought that something was seriously wrong with the engine - the car had absolutely no ability to accelerate. Why did I buy the car in the first place? I was stationed in Italy at the time and bought it through a concession, for pickup when I returned to the US. Boy, what a disappointment, especially after having driven a Fiat 124 sports coupe for about four years - plenty of power for its size, incredible handling, etc. Anyway, the Astre had a couple of leaky spots to boot, and really was a piece of self-propelled garbage as far as I was concerened. Perhaps unfair, but based on the Astre experience, I would never again consider purchase of any kind of GM product.

When I was growing up I didn't realize how bad this car was- my family actually owned three different ones from the time I was 2 to the time I was 8. I can remember carving my name into the plastic wheel covers in the hatch back area drawing the ire of my father. But my favorite story with one of them was when I had left my baseball mit in the trunk my father gave me his keys and told me to get it out. I unfortunately didn't understand there was an ignition key and a door key... attempting to open the trunk with the iginition key to no avail I decided the damn thing must be stuck and what would really make this thing happen is a couple good whacks with a big rock. I ended up smashing the ignition key into the trunk key hole breaking it off while doing some decent body damage to the trunk. Needless to say I don't remember much after my dad came outside to view my masterpiece.

Ther is a vega cosworth near where I live (in the middle of Ohio) without a speck of Rust on it! The car was a notorious rust bucket. I have heard through Family members tha workd at GM during the 70s that the steel was rusting before they put it on the car.

You never see one on the road anymore. That means no one has any interest in restoring one (reminds me of the classic line in Christine, You can't polish a turd). From what I remember, the car was a dud. Style-wise, I thought it was sportier looking than the Pinto. They also had the Cosworth-engine version which had some zip.

While not the worst car in the world, I think it was the worst car Chevrolet ever produced. Some may argue the Chevette but having lived through the time when the Vega and Chevette were current, I think that the Chevette had a more dependable engine. Vegas had an aluminum engine which went through oil like it was a nickle a quart. As far as being cheap (seats, door panels, window and door handles, creature comforts, etc ) it was on par with the Pinto but I give the Vega a worse rating because of it's poor engine design.
