Wed Sep 03 2014Hard work and lots of competition, but if you're good AND lucky, you could be living large doing what you love.

Fri Jan 20 2012This was my dream. I have decent skills in the kitchen and watching others enjoy my food brings a certain thrill. So, I had this idea for a bistro that I was gonna name The Cassowary Cafe. Cassowary omelets, Cassowary Wings, Cassowary Cordon Bleu. Cassowary Wellington. Cassowary Nest Soup. All things Cassowary. I figured that if I could just get someone to nab one live Cassowary, I could create a meal that would bring in enough money to carry me through the year. So, I went all-in and hired Ranger Gord to get that Cassowary for me. I send him off to New Guinea under the guise of being a Nature photographer. Months passed before I heard anything from him, until one day, I got a telegram with a simple message: Lost. Right. Arm. Trying. To. Get. Egg. Please. Sent. Duct. Tape. End. He was last seen clinging to the branches, high up in a Hoop Pine. Don't know what became of Ranger Gord. I've long since given up my Cassowary dream and have surrendered to making dawg food, watering my fer... Read more

Tue Sep 06 2011I'd love to be a chef, because I love to cook, but after watching my sister-in-law struggle to find a chef job is one thing that keeps me from even considering it. She's not even working as a chef because the market is so flooded, she's currently working as a waitress until she can get her catering business up and growing, but that market is overwhelmed as well.

Mon Aug 23 2010Hard work.Fast paced.Again, those who excel & stand out from the crowd can do very well, but for every Paul K. Prudhomme there are 5000 guys & gals making 10 bucks an hour working like galley slaves.

Mon Aug 23 2010Hard demanding work performed under a lot of pressure and involving a lot of drudgery. Yes, there are certainly stars at the top of the pyramid, and there are chefs that manage to open their own restaurant, but they are by no means the norm.

Mon Aug 23 2010Well, the plus side is that you get to wear a novelty apron w/those old sayings such as, 'kiss the chef,' and 'what's cooking.' Anyway, I think a chef would be a great job if your heart was in it. I think chefs who have their own restaurants might be happier, because there isn't an owner to micro-manage them.

Mon Jun 09 2008I think that this would be a first rate job. The trouble is that you have to be perfect almost every time. Impossible.

Sun Mar 04 2007The idea of becoming a chef is hunting me for a while now. I've been told that I am good cook and cooking is very much like a therapy for me. You can't go wrong on something that you enjoy doing and people enjoy having!

Sun Mar 04 2007I think I would be well suited to be a chef.

Fri Dec 08 2006working your b@lls off at a stressful and frenetic pace in a hot sweaty kitchen at times when most people are out having fun and then having to put up with snotty customers complaints. a thankless task.

Sun Mar 27 2005I met many a chef, and each one was wacked out of his flippin mind. Problem is, you are operating under high-pressure, high-stress conditions and you really can never get away from the restaurant. You're working 70-100 hour weeks in sometimes 100 degree heat. You have to be real anal about cost - for every $1 coming into the restaurant, only 3 to 5 cents is profit. There's such a small margin for error. Almost every chef I encountered had a serious drinking problem. One particular day I went in the kitchen and grabbed a swig out of a sprite bottle and almost gagged. It was chef's bottle of straight vodka that he sipped on all day. Another chef had a banquet to prepare for, and he spent 45 minutes staring at a frozen chicken because he was so wasted from the night before. The restaurant I spent the most time in - the better of 3 years - went through 6 chefs. One chef put it to me this way you have to be loony to want to be a chef, and if you weren't, you will be after a year ... Read more

Thu Jul 01 2004I have a friend who is a prep chief, he works long hours, gets paid only every second week, and works at a busy resturant. I myself am not good at cooking, but If I was a chief I would rather work at a regular resturant, not at a MacDonald's.

Sat Nov 15 2003Someone who can really really cook and not just microwave cheap tv dinners.

Tue Aug 05 2003I love to cook and have often thought about culinary school. . .but why? Every night, weekend, and holiday for the next 10-15 years will be spent in the kitchen working! I respect chefs who have earned their reputation because they never seem to get a vacation.

Mon Mar 10 2003Being a chef would be such a hospitable position...to make people happy and nurtured by the work of your hands and ideas in your head.

Sun Feb 02 2003Being a chef must be fun, its what I want to be. Cooking is fun, and your getting paid for it.

Sat Aug 04 2001Hey, you gotta eat. If you have ever gotten tired of eating the same old stuff, day in and day out, then you can admire the artistry of a great chef that can take fresh ingredients and create dishes, from scratch, that have never been tasted. There is a big difference between a cook and a chef. A cook prepares the same food over and over from a set menu with a list of receipes. A chef creates new taste sensations. A chef is an artist in the true sense of the word. Their creations are not only enjoyed with the eyes, they are tasted as well.

Mon Apr 23 2001I love food - especially exotic food! And the most exotic food comes from East-Asia! The last months my favourite food has been Japanese...earlier it's been French, Greek, Mexican, Chinese, Indian...tomorrow it may have become Morrocean of Ethiopean food? :-)

Wed Dec 20 2000Ugh. Stand around in a hot kitchen all day and cook food for other people? You might as well stick bamboo shoots underneath my fingernails. I can't even manage to cook for myself, let alone a restaurant full of people. If it can't be microwaved, it's too much trouble.

Wed Dec 20 2000Who would ever want to be surrounded by food all the time? Preparing, cutting, cooking, sauteeing, baking, grilling, a pinch here, a dab there, sauces, dips....way too much going on in a kitchen to keep straight. I like cooking when I cook for myself or a small group, but cooking for a slew of people....I can't think of one good thing about it. Satisfaction of gluttony? I don't think so.
