It MIGHT fall under performing arts, but its surely NOT a sport and this listing is laughable. When I ran cross country and track I had to OUTRUN other live human beings. SPORT suggests direct competition of an athletic variety with a winner at the end. Cheerleaders are scenery for a football or basketball game.

Seriously guys. are you blind? how is cheerleading not a sport? we may not play games, but we compete. we may not play with balls, (... and for those of you laughing right now, get your head out of the gutter), but neither do runners and many other athletes. we may have skimpy uniforms, but baseball players wear the tightest pants i've ever seen. (and if you say "its because they'll get in the way", same here. you cant have loose clothes on while trying to catch someone before the hit the floor.) you may say we don't have rules. guess what. we do. you say we don't get hurt. and again... we do. whoever said cheerleading is not a contact sport was seriously mistaken. and, we do everything without protective gear. to me, football players look like pansys to cheerleaders. what are they afraid of? falling? or getting hit with a ball? give me one good reason why it isn't.

It infuriates me when people judge anything before having any background knowledge or experience of something, and all those criticizing cheer leading should research exactly what it is before making a judgment of what they think/perceive cheer leasing to be. I'm a British cheerleader, and we don't cheer for football or any other sporting teams ... were purely are our own team. We compete, we train, we sweat and work at what we do, just like other athletes. Iv come to terms with most men not being able to except cheerleading to be a "real sport" mainly because they think we cheer baseball games on ... But this clearly shows how naive they actually are, Reading this most people would say im being one sidded but im a keen footballer and gymnastics and have a real Passion for sport anyway, so take an eclectic view people. Cheer on!!!!!!

i've read some of the ratings and heard things like cheerleading is just choreographed dance and stunts and its not a sport. Well let me remind everyone that every sport out there has plays, correct? Certain plays and passes and things that the team MEMORIZES and PERFORMS. So cheerleading is the same thing. Of course they memorize the routine and cheers. It's a sport by definition of making it a contact sport, exuding physical activity and athletic ability not only on the ground but in the air while stunting.

For those of you who say that gymnastics is a completely subjective sport, you need to go back and do your research. Read the FIG Code of Points and go to www.ngja.org. Subjectivity is limited to the mere administration of the rules. For example, deductions are not arbitrary. The Olympics in 2004, for example, where spun incorrectly by the media - the Korean should have not won and Hamm should have. What CNN, Fox, and MSNBC failed to mention was that the Korean should have also lost 0.2 for a fourth hold - thus ending up 0.1 behind Hamm, as it ended up. The judges did make a mistake, but luckily it worked out as it should have. If you compare judging mistakes in gymnastics with referee calls in football and baseball, there are far more controversial calls in those two mainstream sports than in gymnastics. (I have nationally judged for over a decade and continue to compete for over 19 years. If you'd like, I can provide documentation for all of my statements. Also, I can email you a cop... Read more

Jason1972 hit it right on the head. But what really irritates me , is how pretentious and over the top it's become , both during games , and especially , those national competitions. What happens there is anything but cheerleading ; tossing the girls 100 feet into the air , and they do a dozen flips? That's not cheerleading , that's acrobat stuff , the sort of stunts you see in the circus.Wanna do that?Join the circus, don't bring it to this. And there are other stunts just like those. And they're all dangerous! Many girls and guys have been horribly injured , a couple have even been killed! And for what? For doing things that they idiotically believe are important to a basketball/football game? CHEERLEADING SHOULD NEVER BE DANGEROUS!!!! And whose idea was it to create little girl squads?Squads of girls only about 8,9,10 years old doing pyramids and some other stunts, and the stupid dancing? No,no,no!!Stop it please,it's awful!!!! And I hate what the uniforms have become over the l... Read more

Cheerleading is more gymnastics and dancing. sure one must be athletic to do what is expected of them these days. I agree that way too much pressure to do these dangerous stunts for the crowds has gone way overboard. More girls and guys are getting seriously injured. why always the pressure to do more and risky? same for gymnastics and iceskating. what more dangerous stunts can we get these kids to do. some that may result in life long injuries or death?

i dated a cheerleader in high school for a year and a half. and i went to so many of those competitions that it ruined cheerleading for me forever. i mean, it's kinda cool, and they're amazing athletes, but i just want it at the football game. that's all the cheerleading i need.

No way is this a Sport. It's choreographed activity short of dance routines and gymnastics ( also not a Sport). Subjective scoring also make it not a Sport. Cheerleading is about supporting athletic events - REAL sports. I'm sure the time put into preparing for Cheerleading make it Sports-Like and it can be demanding and even dangerous to perform, but Cheerleading as a Sport is just a joke. Cheerocracy 69's post? Too funny!

Cheerleading is not a sport it is a moral booster for teams that are playing sports. If Cheerleading is a sport does that mean we could see cheeleaders for chearleaders. Is ballet a sport or ballroom dancing. I argue that gymnastics and skating, they don't even do the figures any more, is not a sport. In a real sport you win by out scoring the other person(s) not getting judged to be the best. I can just see it now the next olympic event will be cat showing.

How does Cheerleading come in the same catagory as Rugby, Soccer, Amer Football, ice hockey, Hurling, Aussie rules, makes no sense to me, there is no minus zero so it will have to be a 1..........

I don't consider this a sport. Does it really take much athletic skill to jump up and down in a short skirt and look cute? I know some cheerleaders do gymnastics, but their little acrobatic feats don't require the skill of of a Carly Patterson.

Cheerleading is a sport I suppose, but I wouldn't call a bunch of girls dancing around a great display of atletisism or anything. They have to practice a condition themselves (barely, they can't run half a lap around the track) and they have competitions, so I guess you could call it a sport. Not a very good one, though.

I know cheerleaders, and the ones I have acquaintances with are actually ditzy. They do work hard, but they dress skanky and are generally mean to anyone out of ther circle of friends. They wear their clothes to tight and too low. If cheerleading is a sport, than marching band should be too. We are both there to pump up the morale of the team. But band isn't given any props, and I don't think cheerleading should be either. We work just as hard, but we don't get recognized. And I have heard all the arguments before,so if you wanna hatemail me, go ahead. I just have my beliefs from the cheerleaders I know.

No, not all cheerleaders are ditzes, but this is not a sport. Don't give me the 'cheerleading contests' either- any activity that is decided by judges is not a sport. Cheerleading has an important function in our society- providing endless masturbatory memories for all men and a few women.

  • by

Cheerleading is not a sport. Neither is gymnastics, diving, or ice scating. If the only way to tell who won is to ask the judges, then it is a demonstration, not a sport. This is not to say that it is not very demanding and impressive. Male ballet dancers have amazing athleticism, but ballet is still not a sport. It's a performatnce art, just as cheerleading is.

I suppose there are fewer cheerleaders here in England than in the US, but I have to say that, without exception, the cheerleaders I have met personally are among the nicest, most pleasant people I know. Occasionally, a little vain - but that's hardly a crime - but generally fun-loving, hard-working, helpful and pleasant. Infectiously enthusiastic and very entertaining. Sport would be much the poorer without them.

Um, Rateitall, this isn't a sport. It's a "replacement for sports, made especially for ditses". I admire some of the cool body stunts that REAL cheerleaders can pull, but most cheerleaders just don't want to play a sport, so they will provide a distraction for the other team. Plus, that cutesy-pie little outfit the cheerleaders at my school wear is so incredibly ANNOYING! We need to dispose of cheerleading, quick! It's just a distraction for those of us who play REAL sports, like baseball and basketball. That's all I have to say.

CHEERLEADING IS A SPORT! Alot of people consider cheerleaders ditzy, dumb, and a waste of time. First of all, 83% of cheerleaders have a B average. High school and colleges requires us, cheerleaders to have a 2.0 GPA to try out. Alot of people also consider all the guy cheerleaders gay. Did u know, over 100 years ago, when cheerleading first started, it was dominated by men? The only reason women took over is because the men had to go to war. We work very hard, and we dont get the appreciation we deserve. Most high school cheerleaders practice at an average of 8 hours a week. cheerleading is also the most dangerous women sport. and the people that think cheerleaders are "like omg!" snobby blondes.... then you watch waaay to many movies. maybe you should pay attention to the real world and see how much time and effort we put into cheerleading. We compete, run, weight train, have games, have uniform, strict rules, and alot more. And yes we do have a goal, a goal to be #1 !!! I think....k... Read more
