I LOVED the selection of Italian coffees, pastas and cookies! And OH, the spices! Next time I'll bring an empty suitcase just for the shopping at Central Grocery!

The muffaletta was good and the place is cute in a dirty and dingy kind of way. The guys behind the counter are some of the most unhappy looking people I've encountered in a while. What was surprising to me was that after I ordered my sandwich, I saw swastikas tattooed on the knuckles of the guy who was ringing up my order. If I hadn't been showing a guest from another country the city, I'd have canceled my order. In fact, now I regret that I let that sway me.

And when I asked my 5 year old granddaughter what she wanted for her upcoming birthday she told me how last year she remembered having the best sandwich in the world while in New Orleans and how friendly the "sandwich man" was and how high the stools were that she sat on. She asked for me to take her back again for another sandwich. Yes, Central Grocery--introducing yet another generation of my North Carolina family to this "must do" place while in New Orleans! Thanks, guys!

I only get to New Orleans about once every 5 years, and this is usually the first stop I make when I get to the French Quarter. We were there at the beginning of January and had to wait in a short line to get a muffuletta It was worth every second!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love the atmosphere in the grocery, and the guys working there always make us laugh. It just doesn't get any better or more "New Orleans" than Central Grocery for this Texan!!!! They would get 6 stars from my family if it were an option!!!!!

i agree with cajun2008, the customer service here is horrible! I stopped going here years ago-you never get a hello, a welcome, a thankyou- you get nothing but unfriendly arrogant faces-and the sandwich isn't all that much to write about . i got better in my italian aunts kitchen. i can order just about any product they have in thier store online, never have to leave my house and get better ,friendlier customer service from an online food company. don't bother stopping in here, there is nothing that they sell that is so special or anything unique about this place that you can't get somewhere else with a smile.

Not the best Muffaletta, especially when you can't get one because they're out of bread!!!! What are you famous for and you can't keep bread on hand??? We were there on Saturday, December 27th and were told they were out of bread. We were all very upset and the owner had the nerve to tell my husband that "IT'S JUST A SANDWICH, DON'T KNOW WHY YOU'RE SO UPSET". He doesn't know or care how many people visit his fine city and look forward to one of his sandwiches-I'll tell you what-we won't be visiting his store again and we'll tell everyone we know from Louisiana to Virginia just how poor his customer service is!!!! Thanks to the fine staff at K-Paul's we've found a new Muffaletta source!!!

I'm a local customer who has never seen anyone at this business give any type of great customer service. I have never seen any of the owners and staff that work there ever smile while assiting customers. They never say hello or "Thank You" for your business. Yes, the muffalettas are good, but please appear to be happy about the product your are selling. I just wish they treated thier customers with a warm and gracious greeting and a little "Thank You" when you complete your transaction. I have never once gotten any of this from anyone at Central Grocery. I don't see how they have been in business for over 100 years if this is how they have always treated thier customers.

Absolutely the best Mufellattas in the world. They invented them, so how on earth could they be wrong? The person writing about cheap ingredients and saving money is way off base. One couldn't be more insanely ignorant about a classic culinary creation.

As a local New Orleans resident, this was once a great place to grab a bite to eat, but it has forgotten that it's the locals that made it famous. This place has replaced the high quality foods it once used with boiled ham, swiss cheese, and stale bread. The olive salad isn't the old recipe, but a cheaper one. They have cut corners every which way and rasied prices to boot!

Do not visit NO, without going to Central Grocery. I don't know how many years it has existed, but it is the home of the Mufuletta. Philly has the CheeseSteak, Memphis, the BBQ, but the Muffuletta rules here. We just usually get a half, and waddle back to our hotel for an afternoon nap. The store has a very large selection of gourmet goodies to take back to your hometown. Always crowded, and fun. Love it!

Haven't been to NOLA since 2004 but the last week or so I've had the sandwich in my daydreams consistantly, I think next weekend will do the trick. My three favorites are C G in Nawlins, Chubbys BBq in Hayti MO. and mariasseafood in Ft, Myers Fl.

Central grocery has wonderful mufellattas and AWESOME olive salad. These mufellattas MUST be the best, because they are the ORIGINAL!!!! Don't trust negative reviews, they are only from people who don't know what a mufellatta should actually taste like!!! (And, trust me, they can't be from N.O. either!!!)

This is the most well known muffuleta place in NOLA. It may not be the best, but it is a good place for the novice to try this delicious Italian sandwich. Eat your sandwich in the store or take it to go. They will keep very well for a fairly long period of time so they are an excellent idea for a take along treat when you leave NOLA.

Best muffalettas in town, please... give me a break, this place had a true New Orleans flair, I'll give it that, with its wooden floors and down home feel, but the sandwich was WAY overpriced for the amount and quality of the meat that they use. WAY more bread than meat. I just must not like the olive relish thing at all because I scraped mine off the sandwich, which was really greasy. It was edible, but not worth the wait, the money or the effort. I did pick me up some Crazy Janes Seasoning Mix that I LOVE though, so the trip there wasnt totally wasted, LOL. Check out the store, but skip the food, just my 2 cents.

The Scene This crowded storefront just off the Mississippi River is really more like an old-time Italian deli than a restaurant. Shelves are piled high with pastas, canned mushrooms, sardines, tomato sauces and the like, but locals swear by the house specialty: plate-sized muffulettas. Don't look for tables here; diners sit on bar stools at long wooden countertops. If the crowds are too thick, consider taking your food to go and finding a bench along the river. The Food A New Orleans favorite, the muffuletta starts with a whole loaf of round Italian bread, which is stuffed to overflowing with Italian meats and cheeses, then topped with a rich olive salad.

Still think this place has the best muffalettas in town! For $6 you get an enormous sandwhich for two that hits the spot for lunch. It is really a grocery store so don't expect much for ambience. However, great place to stop in for lunch. A must stop in the French Quarter. Good place to buy all those gifts for friends back home. Spices, cajun mixes, Cafe Du Monde coffee, etc.

The minute you walk into the place the good smells almost ovrewhelm you. Even tho it's in the middle of the quarter I've found the prices to be very reasonable. Don't leave NO without a jar of the Mufaletta Olive Salad (you'll never find it back home) - and if you get a mufaletta to go for your plane ride back to reality everyone will want to know what you're eating. This is definitely a big "don't miss" on the NO tour!!

I have been to CG several times over the past 10 years and I agree with all the other reviews. Yes they are pricey at 9$, yes the quality of the meat and the quantitiy has declined a bit, but the olive topping is what makes their muffaleta so good. I did the muffaleta comparison and while some may have more meat or better meat, the over all experience at CG is still top notch. I would recommend it over several others I have tried.

The Muffuletta here isn't very good. It's a mix of cold cuts on a large round sesame seed bun and an olive paste spread. If you decline the olive mix the sandwitch is very dry. The hot sauces sold here can all be found in the French Market a couple of blocks away for less money. The seating area is a small 1950's style sandwitch counter in the back. This place is very small and crowded.

The Muffuletta is the best sandwich I ever had, delicious, tastefull, the olive salad is outstanding. The service isn`t much but the grocery is very nice, I spent hours buying things to eat and to cook.

Its okay, but the staff is rude and caters to the tourists only now. Best to go to Progresso just next door for better service and better prices.

Actually, the best muffulatto I have ever tasted. The olive salad is the perfect combination to the Italian meats and cheeses piled on the fabulous bread! Stepping into Central Grocery is like stepping back in time!

We went here to get the much praised Muffuletta, however it was prepackaged and hardly any meat to it!! We were very surprised it was almost $9.00 for a sandwich (we did split it)!! They seem to have forgotten their roots of what made the sandwich great at one time.

$9.00 for a mostly empty sandwich, pre-made on stale bread. What's the big deal. I tried it twice just in case 1st was an accident. The 2'nd one was as bad as the 1st.

Sandwiches are wonderful! My husband & I split a muffeletta for lunch and had major leftovers! The place was a little crowded. You want out immediately if you are like me and dont like small crowded areas. The sandwiches are great though!

First trip to N.O. so I carefully planned every bite I would take. The CG is one of the last places on my list and I'm glad I didn't miss it. No frills, no fuss. Wait in line, buy your sandwich and retire to the spartan back of the place to jam it into your face. Great bread, great cold cuts and olive spread. NOT to be missed. I ate well in N.O. for five days, and the muffelatta was the best thing I put in my mouth. As to the (very few), there is always someone who is not happy, who want to tell how much better things used to be. To them I say, get over it. To you I say, get to the Central Grocery.

I still think Central Grocery has the best muffelattas in town. And for $8.95 (plus tax), it's not a bad deal, either, considering it will feed two people. I always buy one to enjoy on the plane during my flight home; the other passengers look on with envy while they munch on their peanuts!

Across the street from the Mississippi River this place serves a great muffalata. Grab a beer and sit down with the locals. At first you'll think you made a mistake in going there but trust me, it's well worth the visit.

Why go to a fancy restaurant, when you can get a real muffuleta here for a bargain price, then walk down to the river and enjoy a picnic. One is big enough for two people to share, easy. The olive spead is out of this world.
